You want to say that now Germany, Italy and Brazil cannot beat 90% of the other Worlds nations? Like Burma, Cuba, Jamaica, Botswana? Anyway, international football is not about beating the other 99%, it's about the world cup. Yes, I agree, nowdays teams like Equador or Mexico put up much more then 40 years ago. But still, there were some great teams besides Italy, Brazil, Germany and England. You had a strong Sweden, Poland, Yugoslavia, and many more.

You mis-read what I said. I said that the top nations back then could beat 90% of the other nations WITH THEIR RESERVES. I don't think it's so easy nowadays, lower nations put up a good fight against the first team, let alone reserves.

But at the end of the day, some people will have to learn to accept that it is my opinion that Pele is ridiculously over-rated. I wouldn't mind people disagreeing, but an opinion on someones footballing ability is very subjective. Pele is not around today, so just like I can't say it's a fact that everyone nowadays is better than Pele, nobody can say that it's a fact that Pele is better than anyone currently playing, since he'll never be able to compete with them.

Disagree all you like, it's not going to change my opinion, and it doesn't mean that you're right or anything.
Fillipo Simone
I can name you now, in 2008, about 10 kids who were inspired by Pele.

The same cannot be applied to Sobis, and never will. But okay,..I understand. It's a different opinion on him you have. I respect that. But i'd be glad you respect Pele a bit more.

Pele was great for 'him time', Kurt. of course now they are tens of strikers who are better than Pele would have been now. but 30-40 years ago, there weren't many, if any. someday football will improve so much that not only Maradona, but even Messi or Ronaldo or Kaka will not be appreciated like they're appreciated now. we don't know at what rate football is progressing though. that day could be in 2020's, or could be in 2090's!

That is true.

Look at the keepers in 50's, 60' and even 70's. they look like a bunch of geeks, but that is how good goalkeepers were back then. they were not bad for their time. nowadays goalkeepers do amazing stuff. save shots that would've looked impossible to save for those old keeper. a few decades from now, the same WILL be said about Buffon and Casillas and etc. are they bad or overrated goalkeepers now? no. it's just like Pele's case. you can't measure his abilities with today's standards and say he was was overrated.

I think you summed it up for me there.

Pele, good for his time? Certainly. One of the best ever? Not for me.

I have no problem with people saying Pele was the greatest players for his time , but it's when they label him footballs greatest ever player.. it's just outrageous for me.

Anyways, this Pele debate has gone on too much!

This thread has passed ignorant and is quickly passing "completely inane" as well. Pele not good as the strikers today???? Lolzzzz huh.gif Pele was the best....only Ronaldo and Maradonna did comparable things....This is UNBELIEVABLE!!!!! Try doing some research befor you talk out of your @$$e$. Pele could do all of those tricks that make people think CR7 and Ronaldinho are gods. He was the ultimate assassain and played in an era where defenders were not as good as they are today no doubt.....but that's why they compensated for it by plain straight up VIOLENCE........It was only till Marco Van Basten kept getting injured that they stopped certain harmful defensive manouvers like tackling from behind.....Pele played in an era where racism infiltrated football to the extent that for a black player to get a foul you probably had to injure him for life......and he surpassed these odds to still win as much as he did.

The other thing is Sobis has gotten less time on the pitch and has scored more goals than Pato......how that makes him average or crap amazes me. Not because a player wears our jersey is he automaticaly a majority stakeholded on the "best in his position" title. BE OBJECTIVE!!

Are you comparing 19yo Pato with 23yo Sobis? huh.gif are you comparing someone who's played 4 professional seasons with one who's played 1 and half?

You're not making any sense my friend, besides last time I checked Pato scored 9 goals in 18 games in highest level (Milan - Serie A), and Sobis has scored 8 goals in 57 games in a way lower level (Betis - La Liga). just because he hasn't found his form with the Selecao yet doesn't mean anything.

No I'm not saying that Sobis> Pato (I think I've said a million times that Pato has far more potential but I guess 'reading' isn't a strong point of many dry.gif )

ALL that I'm saying is that sobis played less and scored more than Pato.....so atm to say that Sobis is crap seems a tad harsh/unfair don't you say?

Another thing is the 8 goals in 57....I'm sure someone as knowledgeable as yourself knows that Sobis can't be a pure striker for Betis the way Pato is for Milan....Pato was played up front ....often alone and sometimes with Gila (again 'alone' biggrin.gif ) so was able to get on the end of far more scoring opportunities. Sobis played as a wing-forward and would naturally have had less opportunities...a phenomonon exacerbated by the fact that Betis is a crap team.
Something similar has happened to Rooney this season in the EPL where in reality He was the winger and CR7 was the CF (shhh don't tell SAF I told you)....the end result.....few goals for Rooney
daj0

Its currently 0-2 for the Argies, 60 min plaid, if Dunga is not putting pato in now....

Oh and apparently Dinho is playing like crap sad.gif...

Because Sobis plays for a second rate side, and plays in a league where its easier to score goals. You aren't taking the bigger picture (and you usually don't).

And how did Sobis do against Argentina? Not that well at all. He's rubbish. Your special Sobis did nothing out there special. I don't even see how you have the audacity to put on him on the level of Pato.

If you think he gets more scoring opportunities than Sobis, you clearly don't know how defensive the Serie A is. No he doesn't. Often in the La Liga, games turn into goal scoring fests... I've seen more 4-3 games and such...

Pato: We Will Win Scudetto

Braziliant starlet Alexandre Pato has confidently declared that Milan will win the Scudetto this season, while he also hails Ronaldinho.

Pato is currently on Olympic duty with Brazil in Beijing, and this afternoon will play in the Bronze medal match against Belgium.

The 18-year-old has been playing alongside new Milan team-mate Ronaldinho, who he believes is back to his best following his summer move from Barcelona.

“I see Ronaldinho every day,” Pato told the Corriere dello Sport.

“He is a phenomenon. He is working and after these thirty days I can say: he has worked hard.

“He has always been on the field both before and during the Olympics.

“Ronaldinho is back. He will have a great year in Italy and he will make Milan great.”

Pato is extremely confident going into the new season with his club, and he has no doubts that the Rossoneri will win the Scudetto.

"Milan this year are very strong,” he stated.

“I am sure we will win the championship.

“I am not saying we will be among the top teams - I am saying we will actually win the Scudetto."

Milan have made a number of impressive signings this summer, including Mathieu Flamini, Gianluca Zambrotta, Marco Borriello,a nd of course Ronaldinho.

Pato: Scudetto is ours

Saturday 23 August, 2008

Alexandre Pato is confident "Milan will win the Scudetto this year," although he is very impressed by Roma's acquisition Julio Baptista.

"Milan are very strong this year. I am certain: We will win Serie A. I won't say we are going to finish in the top places. I say we're taking the Scudetto," he told the Corriere dello Sport.

However, 'The Duck' is somewhat concerned that the Giallorossi have picked up their own Brazilian talent.

"I was surprised when I heard Roma had bought up Julio Baptista's entire contract rather than take him on loan from Real Madrid. It's a fantastic bargain for them.

"I know him well from the Selecao and can say Roma have got themselves a real force of nature, a hitman and a leader. He will score many goals and have an excellent campaign."

Pato has been unable to take part in pre-season friendlies because he was at the Olympics, winning a bronze medal for Brazil with new club teammate Ronaldinho.

"I see Ronaldinho every day and he is a phenomenon. He is working hard and after a month out here I can confirm he always put in the hours for training, before, during and after the Olympics.

"Ronaldinho is back and he will have a great year in Italy with a fantastic Milan team.

"I did not play very much out here, but with the Rossoneri I have to play a lot and much better. In the first three Olympic games I fought hard, but always had very static defences in front of me."

Pato was later dropped in favour of Rafael Sobis and Coach Carlos Dunga suggested it was a fitness issue.

"I stepped on to the pitch and, as I said, I was alone against the entire opposition. When I went off, the defences were tired. It is much easier to look good when the defenders are exhausted." ((Sorry 10ie!) this last part is obviously a little F-you from Pato to Dunga!)

han2503
Carlo is very right, not the time or place to criticise one of your youngest players, who needs encouragment above anything else.

And Brazil just had no shape, they played the ball 95% of the time among the defenders and the midfielder furthest back. Horrible to watch. And Dinho was played as an out and out striker rather a more supportive role out wide or even deeper though the middle

Yes. smile.gif What Mr. B wants, he gets. If not, then we'll win it next year, with a new coach. Either way, the point is I'm not a public personality. I can get away with what I say. Pato can't. And the sooner he learns it, the better. He should have said: 'We'll give it our all to win it', or 'We'll put forward a 200% effort'. Because fans or not, people (and media) remember these statements, and that can come back to haunt a player. Friendly suggestion.
