Who the hell is Bastos??
Darunia
LB for Lyon.

While 3rd GK doesn't really matter... it's still a little odd Dunga took Doni over Julio Sergio when Doni has lost his starting spot to him. Also, Julio Baptista? Really? He started 4 games all season for Roma ...

LMAO, didn't even notice he called Doni. What a douchebag. biggrin.gif

Then again, if he called Dinho, I doubt he'd have given him any playing time. But not calling Pato is unforgivable, although his form lately could be a justification.

Brazil have a solid starting line-up. It's the reserves I'm not so sure about.
Dracoris
Well, atleast if I make the trip up to Chicago I'll get to see Ronnie and Pato play, but I feel for them. Ronnie in particular seemed to really want it, and I think he earned it. Had Milan as a whole done better, who knows.
X-Offender
Wow, Domenech left out Benzema. I know he's had a shitty season and all, but can't say I was expecting that. No Nasri and Vieira either.
Fishdoll
No Zanetti for the argies (but yes to Milito).
X-Offender
And no Cambiasso either! Maradona is a complete idiot.
Tennie
He was a joy to watch as a player but...yeah. Coaching? Not so great. Didn't notice Cambiasso's omission on first look - that is really dumb. Don't like the guy (he's got cooties) but he's a fantastic player.

Queiroz didn't call up Quaresma (no surprise) or Joao Moutinho (big surprise - unless he's injured?) for Portugal.

Interesting note: Both Italy and Germany have exactly 1 player each (Rossi and Ballack) who do NOT play domestically in their league. All of England's players play in England.

I've put up a new poll in the poll section.

EDIT: According to tuttomercatoweb, Ronaldinho has been put in the reserve list for Brazil (the guys to be called up if someone on the full list gets hurt).

We should win it by default!

Not picking Cambiasso is a joke. I have no idea why he would not select him. He should be in the first XI so to not even make the squad!? Oh well, at least watching El Cocaino make a mess of the Argies is at least one guarenteed high point.
Bluesummers
wow dunga.... there goes my world cup dry.gif

laugh.gif I like their game... but they're destined to fail! Even if Maradona was fired now they'd do better.

Why is no one commenting on Greece's call ups? huh.gif

I am glad that Sokratis (lastnameican'tspell) from Genoa was called up!

England's Group C opponents Slovenia have kept faith with the core of players who ensured they were one of the World Cup's shock qualifiers.
West Brom's Robert Koren is the only British-based player in coach Matjaz Kek's provisional 30-man finals panel.
Newcastle midfielder Haris Vuckic, 17, and ex-captain Klemen Lavric miss out despite speculation they would feature.
Inter Milan midfielder Ren Krhin, 19, is the youngest in the squad, which will be cut to 23 on 1 June.

"We are now putting the players though individual tests, medical examinations and individual exercises," said Kek, whose team play a friendly against New Zealand three days after he announces his final squad.
Slovenia were surprise qualifiers for South Africa when, after coming second to Slovakia in their qualifying group, they progressed at the expense of Guus Hiddink's fancied Russian side on away goals after the sides' play-off finished 2-2 on aggregate.

I hope Jimmy breaks Koren in half when we play!

As for Greece's call ups, did you even post them.

So here's the cover of ESPN magazine in the us:

It's caused a bit of controversy.

Can anyone see why?

Is that Giuseppe Rossi? Are they writing off the team's chances before they even begin?

Well done to the pirate. 96.gif

That's exactly it. Fans of the US NT are NOT happy about that cover.

I might have to talk the fish into returning a bottle of rum to you.
kurtsimonw
I'm sorry but it's incredibly arrogant to be annoyed by that picture.
servbot
Hah! Finally some realistic expectations coming out of ESPN. They've been running daily articles on their site trying to hype up the World Cup domestically, and they always are going out of their way to make the U.S. team more relevant than it really is in the competition. ffs, they listed Donovan as the 50th best player in the world so that an American made their top 50 players list.

They should make it out of the group stage, but that's all I expect. Any victorious knockout games would be way above expectations for this team:

Goalkeepers (3): Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Tim Howard (Everton), Marcus Hahnemann (Wolverhampton)

Defenders (9): Carlos Bocanegra (Rennes), Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover), Jay DeMerit (Watford), Clarence Goodson (IK Start), Chad Marshall (Columbus Crew), Oguchi Onyewu (AC Milan), Heath Pearce (FC Dallas), Jonathan Spector (West Ham United)

Midfielders (12): DaMarcus Beasley (Rangers), Alejandro Bedoya (Örebro), Michael Bradley (Borussia Mönchengladbach), Ricardo Clark (Eintracht Frankfurt), Clint Dempsey (Fulham), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy), Maurice Edu (Rangers), Benny Feilhaber (Aarhus), Stuart Holden (Bolton), Sacha Kljestan (Chivas USA), Robbie Rogers (Columbus Crew), José Torres (Pachuca)

Forwards (6): Jozy Altidore (Villarreal), Edson Buddle (Los Angeles Galaxy), Brian Ching (Houston Dynamo), Robbie Findley (Real Salt Lake), Herculez Gomez (Puebla), Eddie Johnson (Aris Thessaloniki)

I hope they overachieve, but I'm realistic here.

And ftr, if I'm Rossi I go to Italy too.

kurtsimonw
Thats not a bad team and I'm really pleased Guzan made the squad.

Bocanegra can go screw himself though.
servbot
smile.gif

On paper it might be the best the US has had. It's not a bad team, but it certainly isn't a team that has a chance to make a serious impact.

Keepers have been the US team's strong point since I started watching in 2002 with Friedel back there. Guzan will be the backup to Howard though, as Howard has had some great performances for the NT, and I think he does pretty well in EPL too (you would know that better than I though) There are some decent players but also some glaring holes like whoever plays right back, central midfield (assuming Donovan and Dempsey play wide), and forwards, although Altidore is very young and should improve with experience.

As much as I'd like to see Albertazzi get action on Saturday, I wouldn't mind seeing Onyewu get a shot either, to get him a taste of ~quality play and a bit of match fitness before heading to camp. They'll need him at top form if they want to have a chance against Rooney and Co. wink.gif
Tennie
Servbot, a question: do you folks in chicago refer to Donovan as 'Landycakes' whne the Galaxy play the Fire? Or is it just a DC thing?
servbot
I have no idea what Fire fans do. smile.gif

The only place I've heard that name from is you, though, so I'm guessing no. I kind of like it though.

He's kind of in a tough position, he's clearly the best player the US team has had, and at a time that the popularity of the game is showing real potential of rising, yet he's not a real superstar either so he gets the type of negativity like when I just ridiculed ESPN for listing him at #50.
Tennie
Nah, I just don't like him cos he's a primadonna who wines, dives, and chokes. smile.gif AND he plays for LA.
servbot
Don't forget blows wide open chances in front of the net. Oh wait, you mentioned chokes. My bad. smile.gif

Do you dislike that he plays specifically in LA or plays in MLS?
Tennie
Eh, LA is just obnoxious, kind of like the Yankees.

But mostly I just don't like Donovan, whoever he's playing for.
servbot
lol, I always compared the Yankees to Man U. smile.gif
Tennie
Oh, now that's valid. Mostly. I'd perhaps pick Liverpool but it's the same basic idea (same sense of entitlement).

LA is marginally less puke-worthy now that they've got rid of Alexi Lalas as managing director. I'll at least give 'em that much (but ack, he's back doing color commentary.)

Also ACK ACK ACK and warning for those who may be considering watching US-ESPN streams of the games:

Max Bretos, late of Fox Soccer Channel, has joined ESPN as a football specialist-reporter type person. Be warned.
servbot
I'll tune into the Spanish broadcast if it's available smile.gif

I like Tommy Smyth from ESPN though.

If I'm Rossi, I probably play for Italy too. He'd really shine in the US squad though, and could realllly help us out.

Well...I mean if he feels he's Italian...there's a not a lot to be done there is it? He's never gonna care as much even if he wears the US colours.
kurtsimonw
It wasn't just being applied to Rossi though. X said nobody would pick the US over Italy unless they're stupid. But that's not true at all. It's not just a USA/Italy thing either. If Brazil called you up, would you pick them over India, just because your parents were Brazilian?

I meant anybody in Rossi's position. The guy has Italian parents, spent his youth career at Parma since was 13, he even has a full Italian name for God's sake. It goes without saying that he should play for the Azzurri.

So kurt by your definition, if I were born on a ship or a plane on remote seas, then what would that make me?

I don't say 'just because'... that's the whole point... for those of us that think blood is what matters blood is not 'just because'... in the exact same way I can say 'just because he's born in x'... I should not say that.

And some people are proud of their origin. Who are you to decide how someone feels what he or she is? If both your parents are from a different country, you got a good reason to feel like one of them also.

I didn't say I was deciding how I feel, but to say the way you feel is what you are, or correct. If went and lived in China and felt like I was Chinese, would that make me Chinese? Not at all. After a while I would probably gain Chinese citizenship, but that's all it is, citizenship.

I appreciate that you disagree, but there's really no need for the condescending tone in which you did it.
