Didn't they get 40 million Euro for Overmars

I think that's a lot of money by any means.
But except that transfer....yes. Arsene should have gotten much more money for Vieira and Henry. That'd they lost Flamini on a Bosman is unlucky...but something like that can happen do any club.

My mistake, I did not mean to mention Overmars.
Well Flamini's wages were minimal so it would not hurt Wenger to renew him for at least another year.

Jul 30 2008, 10:14 AM
Well...he couldn't expect such a great season from Flamini. He could have tuned out be useless as well. He would hvae wasted money then. And I'm quite certain he tried to renew his contract in January but it was probably to late then.

Sagna for £6m, aren't you meant to be defending Wengers' transfers.

And Kanu!? You paid that much for Kanu!? What a joke! I'd turn him down on a free if my team already had 3 or 4 strikers. Just a difference of opinion on Wenger, don't take it personal.
I'm still skeptical on whether he's good in the market, my opinion is that he isn't. That's why he has so many different players. His squads rarely last very long, who's Arsenal longest serving player at the moment?
Just a difference of opinion on how good he is in the market.
Sagna for 6 million is a great buy. We're talking about a player who runs for 90 minutes week in and week out, almost never injured, strong physically, good in the air, good positioning, well-timed runs and NEVER makes mistakes. I have watched every Arsenal match this season except two or three, so I should have an idea of what I'm talking about.
Kanu was another good buy.
To end this, it is a FACT that Wenger has used less money during his 12 years at Arsenal than Mourinho did in three years at Chelsea, and Wenger has earnt back almost everything he ever used on transfers with the sales of Overmars, Petit, etc.

That's a silly argument really, of course he has, values have gone sky high since around 2003/04. As I've already mentioned before, Mourinho could have bought those players for much cheaper if he was at another club, but teams hold Chelsea to ransom as they know they have money.
Anyways, the summers longest transfer saga looks like it could be over, thanks to the terrible math skills of Rafa Benitez. MON has repeatedly told Liverpool that he will not budge from £18m, but would accept £16m + Finnan.. so Liverpool have no offered £17.5m + Finnan. Now, why he's wasting that last £1.5m I'm not sure..

Fabregas was free.. As for Henry, yeah, good signing wasn't he? But he signed for a decent amount of money back then, so wouldn't you expect him to be good?
A good signing is like you said before, Toure for £500k or Vieira for £3m. And his transfers that rank as "shockingly bad" still outnumber his "good" transfers.
And talking of north London clubs, apparently Spurs have agreed fee's totalling £36m for Bentley & Arshavin. Obviously no good team wanted the latter and he was too up himself and has now made himself look ratehr foolish. After the Euro's, Arshavin stated he would not consider a move to a team not in the CL, even mentioning Spurs by name, now he's going there..

Portuguese midfielder Amaury Bischoff joins Arsenal
Arsenal can today confirm the signing of midfielder Amaury Bischoff.
The French-born Portugal Under-21 international, 21, was a youngster with French clubs SR Colmar and Strasbourg before moving to Werder Bremen in 2005.
Bischoff, who can play either in the centre of midfield or on the right, was a regular at youth levels for Werder Bremen. His one senior appearance for the Bundesliga club came against Celta Vigo in the UEFA Cup in 2007.
Amaury has played for France's Under-18 team, however in 2007 he elected to train with Portugal and to date has appeared for their Under-21 side.
Everyone at Arsenal Football Club would like to welcome Amaury, who will wear squad No 28, and will join up with his team-mates for pre-season when the squad returns from their training camp in Austria.

MON's Barry Delight Martin O'Neill tonight spoke of his delight at the news Gareth Barry will be staying at Villa Park next season.
As we exclusively revealed earlier today, Villa set a deadline for Liverpool to pursue their interest in the England international. That deadline passed at tea-time and Barry will not be moving to Anfield.
O'Neill never gave up hope that Barry could be persuaded to stay and consistently reiterated his desire to keep the player.
Tonight the Villa boss told www.avfc.co.uk: "Naturally we're all absolutely delighted that Gareth will be staying at Villa Park and relieved that there is resolution and closure to the transfer saga.
"At a very positive meeting on Monday it was agreed between Gareth, his agent, Mr Lerner and myself that a deadline should be communicated to Liverpool to finally resolve the situation.
"Liverpool were informed and that deadline came and passed. Now we can all look forward to the season ahead with relief, anticipation and ambition."
AVFC Proud of the manager for sticking to his value all along and not being bullied by them into giving him away on the cheap.
He'll go on the cheap somewhere next summer, but who cares as we don't need the money anyway. Hopefully his cheaper value will mean other teams will come in for him, and p*ss on Liverpools bonfire once again!

Where to start..Firstly, Arsenal have a lot, and I d mean a lot of English youth prospects who you will hear more from in the coming years, Walcott, Wilshere, Simpson, Ramsay(Welsh, but whatever), Gibbs, Lansbury, Gilbert and Randall all look very promising.
New players? I don't know. I think Wenger will bring in one more but I don't see us buying more than that.
DMF's? I think this Bischoff guy might play in that position, but I can't be sure. It is possible that that's the one Wenger is looking for now.

Would you guys consider it a good accomplishment for Spurs if they finished 4th?
I ask this because recently they have spent £10m on a keeper, £20m on a defense, £60m on midfield and £25m on strikers. That's £115m on their first 11 - somehwta similar to the number Ambromovic spent in his first year at Chelsea I believe. So they're spending as much as Chelsea, and more than Liverpool and Arsenal, so why would 4th be seen as a good finish? Do you think Roman would have accepted 4th in his first season at Chelsea? I highly doubt it.
So I think if Spurs don't finish in the top 4, it would be a huge failure on the return for the money they've spent.

1- arsenal and liverpool both had much better squads to begin with.
2- they've sold sold players so that counts against the spending (defoe counts in there)
3- we must consider these pending on young talents and not proven players. they probably wont reach their potential this season.
4- this sort of spending is not the same as chelsea's, we all know how transfer fees have inflated since and especially in the prem.
i'm sure their goal is to make 4th but if they dont make it i dont think it's the end of the world.

Chelsea were about where Spurs are now before Roman took over. A decent club who'd finish around 6th on average and have a few good cup runs. And Chelsea also sold players in that year. We all know prices have inflated, but we all know Chelsea over paid for players too, £24m for SWP? They could have got him for a little over half if they wanted, they just didn't want to go through weeks of negotiation and stuff.
It's an almost identical situation in my opinion. Except Chelsea spent wisely, Spurs are spending on unproven talents in positions they don't need.

Liverpool don't need Barry as long as Alonso stays and IMHO a in-form is twice what Barry is though I don't see that Alonso for 2 years now.

Current standings
Hamburg - 7
Madrid - 5
Juventus - 4
Arsenal - 0
(You get a point for every goal you score, as well as 3 points for winning and a point for a draw)
For Arsenal to win the tournement they need to..
-Win, score at least 4 goals, win by at least 2
For Madrid to win the tournement they need to..
-Drawn AND score at least 1 goal.
OR
-Win
OR
Lose, but score 2 goals, while conceeding less than 4.
So I think Madrid have it pretty much win, and Arsenal have almost no chance.
