Agree about the Dida bit, he's been under a cloud ever since he made his debut. Few, if any, have acknowledged his talents on the worldwide scale. Part of it is maybe him being black, I think he's the only black keeper that made it to the top in Brazil in what, 50 years?! They always prefer the white bread for the Selaco spot.
I read on some site that when Dida made his Brazil debut in '95, the match commentators didn't bother hiding their surprise at seeing a black GK in net.
Back then, he was the first starting black Brazilian keeper in half a century, and the first and only starting GK to go by a nickname (others used just their last names: Peres, Ceni, Taffarel, etc.). He was also the first black GK to even start, let alone play, for Brazil in a World Cup since Barbosa in 1950, and one of only two Brazilian goalies ever to wear the captain's armband (Emerson Leao the other).
In 2003, he became the first Brazilian keeper ever to be nominated for the Ballon d'Or. In 91 total caps, he conceded less than 70 goals, which is quite impressive, and winning the WC in '06 would've solidified his legend. *sigh* However, he was never entirely liked in Brazil because of his personality.
During his Milan career, he was the only black GK in Serie A, though I'm not sure if that's still the case nowadays. Only one other Afro-Brazilian GK in Europe I know of is Helton, who plays for Porto.
I think I'd better stop before the other posters hunt me down and try to kill me. I'm done, I promise.
(And don't worry, Cap'n Jack, there's
plenty of me to go around. I'll soak this up because it's a rare occurrence when guys fight over me.)
