Um, nothing?! huh.gif unsure.gif tongue.gif

Unfortunately, Totti goals don't seem to help in the league. There was a Cicinho own goal in added time. FT 1-1 draw.

Toro beat Palermo 1-0 in the early game.

The pick of tomorrow's early games is cugini-Udinese; Milan play Lecce in the late game.

I can't decide whether to laugh or be sad on the first issue. sad.gif On the second one, I agree though. I'll be watching the inter and Udinese game. Should be an absolute cracker, hopefully.

Well, Roma's having a bad season. What was to expect? They never were the Milan or Juventus level. Even not the Inter level. They had their chances for 2 straight season but missed them completely. And Serie A is a too good league to allow them stay as a "always second". Fiorentina, Udinese and others did much in the transfer period, gathered up very competetive squads - and there you have it! Also, they've lost their president and have financial issuses, which only adds to the mentioned problems.

All this is true, but the way the dropped two points today signals only two things: One is that either they're wholesomely stupid for that own goal, or wholesale unlucky for the same. blink.gif Bologna isn't anywhere near a big club, it was promoted form Serie B this year. Roma's problems are their own makings, but all of them combined haven't got a thing to do with today's loss - it was plain bad luck. That too in added time.

I took a peek at the table, and tey're officially with 8 points in 10 games! dry.gif Meaning, more games, less points. And for a club that was three points off from being last season's champions early this year is something to be pitied at. They're even worse than we've ever been in the last couple of years before the winter break. I don't see them qualifying for the CL next year, seeing as more than the quarter of the league's matches have been played by now. Unless they do something really inspiring. Which also means no $25 million from UEFA had the qualified for the quarters, which ultimately means no or less transfer money. Boy, I'd hate to be them, at this point in time!

I'd say it's something more than a bad season. sad.gif It's a stinking, unlucky season for a big Italian club!

A belated cookie to Palermo's Antonio Nocerino.

Nocerino was sent off late in the game v. Toro. He was given a straight red for an elbow in an aerial challenge. I think it was a really harsh call - maybe it deserved a yellow but not a straight red; there was no intent. That said, what he did once the card was shown really impressed me. Instead of arguing or pleading his case as so many players do, he shook the referee's hand and walked off the pitch with no fuss at all.

Big as in top 5. rolleyes.gif In fact, I'd be inclined to mark clubs in the first third of any league as big, the second third as middle or average, and the bottom third as small. So by that measure there are at least 6-7 big clubs in any league, the top ones.

Sure they're not huge, as Milan, and Juve/inter are! tongue.gif But Roma's not small either as you think.

Well they are not even that big in my opinion... I mean, the team they were playing against tonight, Bologna, have won 7 Italian titles, 4 more than them... it's recent success that has led people to believe they are big but they are actually 8th in the list of number of titles won. here

Exactly, and Roma's been second 11 times, 7 times more than them. All said and done when you count first and second places, it's Roma's 14 to Bologna's 11. With their last coming way back in 1964. I love the Internet. biggrin.gif Where would I be without it?

But the vital point is that these are all stats. As you mentioned, it's the recent success that makes people believe. Same goes for Chelsea, and same goes for Roma. For most people United and Chelsea are bigger clubs than Arsenal (while in reality the opposite is true) because they've got more money and more stars. All said and done you're right that Roma's aren't even that big. Which I agree to, as I've seen countless times they haven't got that finishing for the final touch, or more importantly, winning mentality when the going gets tough. wink.gif They've been riding the Tottiwagon for far too long.

We've got to remember there are millions of International Roma fans, much more than that can be said for Bologna, Napoli, or even Genoa. But as things stand they're still in the top 5 of Serie A, and it pains me to see them so helpless as they are as I write this. Not my idea of a fun time, to be honest! I want Serie A to be strong and competitive, but not at the expense of a big club. Okay, maybe inter. tongue.gif Or Juve. But jokes aside, both you and I know it can get real dirty for them, real soon.

Did Roma really expect to be competitive this season when their biggest offseason signings were John Arne Riise and Julio Baptista?

This, my friend is less than competitive. innocent.gif Having more matches played than points, now that 1/4th of the season has been completed, borders complete failure. Yes, both are crap players and even worse signings at this time, but I'd still have put Roma in the top half, if not more.

I agree with your post except for that one sentence there, acid.

I'm not a stat junkie but I think you'll find that Napoli has a fairly significant international following, especially in South America, due to the Maradona connection.
acid911
Sure, Tennie. cool.gif Napoli's got lots of friends in Italy too, and a couple of them in Iran, if I'm not mistaken! But it's a bit of an exception, the same cannot be said of other smaller clubs in Serie A/B.

Blog: Cicinho classic
The highlight of Week 11 has been Cicinho's magnificent own goal which, argues Susy Campanale, ought to be rewarded for pure comedy value

Not since John Arne Riise put the ball past a startled Pepe Reina in the 2008 Champions League semi-final has an own goal been scored with such panache. Yes, Cicinho will be remembered for his contribution to the 1-1 draw in Bologna, that is for sure. Just when Roma thought they had turned a corner with that victory over Chelsea and were heading for their first away win of the Serie A season, the Brazilian popped up with a howler of epic proportions.

So much about that own goal was so special. The Giallorossi were leading, it was the 91st minute and he was under no pressure whatsoever as Marco Di Vaio’s cross came in from the right channel. Did Cicinho stand his ground or gently guide the ball out of play for a corner to take the pressure off? No, he opted to perform a spectacular diving header from six yards. Really, if he had done that at the other end against the opposition goalkeeper, it would have been one of his best moments in a Roma jersey. As it stands, it is merely his greatest highlight for all neutral observers and fans of comedy.

Some own goals are so magnificent, so very ridiculous, that they really ought to count for their team. At least half a goal just to underline their contribution to the match and all future DVD compilations of football gaffes that will no doubt find their way into your Christmas stockings or bargain basement bins at some point.

It is my job to highlight the wonderful aspects of the game and admire the beauty of Serie A’s great talents. Yet I gain a sense of cruel satisfaction from laughing at a truly appalling own goal. The same goes for dreadful misses and particularly ludicrous fouls. Not ones that hurt the opponent, of course, but challenges that are elbow-high and yet the player carded always protests his innocence with absolute conviction.

Does this make me a bad person?

An entire article about an own goal? Sometimes I think she gets her rocks off writing editorials like this.

Guesses! rolleyes.gif Wild ones. We'll never know the exact figure, we can't know. Where on God's good earth is Fiorentina? Don't tell me it's lower than Lazio? But I'm sure they haven't put into their calculations fans from all countries, particularly Asia. Not only these numbers, but other numbers I've seen. Fans from Japan, China, India, Pakistan, even Middle East - that can skew up the numbers big time.

I'd put Milan at top (not because I'm a fan), but if they ever did a wholesome survey there is no chance Juve would still be tops, they don't have many players left after their Serie B trip. tongue.gif We've almost got a Galactico era started of some sorts, with players like Maldini, Sheva, Ronaldinho, Kaka, Nesta, Pato, (even Ronaldo for a little while). The thing with these Asian countries (and usually in general) is that if their favorite player is playing for a particular club, they'll begin to like it, watch games, and even be fans of it, eventually.

Right now, all eyes are on Milan. And the fact that we're winning is the reason the media/critics/haters are quiet. But anyway, at the end of the day these are just stats. I can only imagine if they gave every football fan a piece of paper, a questionnaire, of some sorts Milan would come out tops. We've always been an International club, more so with the way we work, coupled with our CL wins.
