He did have some very good players. It's just that they weren't accepted as world class then. Like Kaka till the CL season.
Deco, Carvalho, Costinha etc.
And I was speaking about the past two seasons of the Carlo era which were the ones where we really have done badly. And I'll have to disagree with barely having done anything with them.
Of the world class names you've mentioned, only Rui, Nesta and Sheva were accepted big names. Forget Maldini, he's part of the scenery at Milan.
Dida was originally a number 2 who made it big.Stam, Cafu were considered on the decline. And Rino was at Celtic.
I don't want to turn this into a Jose vs Carlo match. We've had enough of that over the past season.
I just think when Carlo says he hasn't had the opportunity to have his first team gel together in this case, it is a justified excuse (for now). I don't think it takes more than 5-7 matches to hit on a decent combination despite our shambolic defence.
He did have some decent players, but not many. The team that played the CL Final: Baia, Paolo Ferreira, Jorge Costa, Carvalho, Valente, Pedro Mendes, Costinha, Maniche, Deco, Derlei, Corlos Alberto. With Benni McCarthy and Bosingwa on the bench.
World class at this time? Carvalho and Deco were the only two in my opinion. Ferreira, Valente, Mendes, Maniche and McCarthy have all played in the EPL, and I can't say any of them can be described as more than 'above average'. Costinha is okay, but no better than somebody like Tiago who is hardly World class. Baia is a decent keeper, Bosingwa is good now, but then? To say he had alot of World class players is a bit unfair. But still, my point is that Jose did win things with these players. Carlo won very little.
But you can look at others, it's not just Jose. SAF has done a great job with some very average players at times, because he's great, as has Capello. Carlo just isn't in their league, or even close.
It's not a case of whatever the media thinks of these players.. you can say these players weren't that good or were on the decline or whatever, but they weren't really. It seems people decide how good these players are based on the arguement they're using. If we're arguing about how good the Milan team was in 03, people will say they're all great, yet when we're saying Carlo did little with them, suddenly they're all not so great..
Carlo seems to be given new excuses all the time. Early in 06/07 it was the effects of losing Sheva and calciopoli, late in 06/07 we were doing well in the CL so we were resting players in Serie A. Early 07/08 all the teams we come up against at home were playing amazing because it was a 'cup final' for them, then we had too many injuries, then this season our players need time to gel.. the fact he's been defended so much shows he's not good enough in my opinion.
Look at the players that've been defended alot in arguements, or been the focal point of them, lately. Dida, Gila, Paolo, Carlo.. it seems they're a focal point of arguements for a reason, that being they're not longer good enough.
