Mourinho promises repercussions
Sunday 26 October, 2008
Jose Mourinho was furious with his Inter squad. “I want my players to do what I tell them to. Perhaps they don’t know who I am yet.”

The Nerazzurri were clear at the top of the table, but their 0-0 draw against 10-man Genoa has allowed Udinese and Napoli to catch them.

“I am absolutely not happy because I always aim to improve and win. When you don’t win, you cannot be happy, but today I prefer not to talk about my players, as that is part of my mentality,” said Mourinho.

“I am the only one responsible for this squad, but I want my players to do what I tell them to.

“Perhaps a few of them don’t know who I am yet. In those called up for Wednesday’s game, there will be some surprises.”

The veiled threat comes ahead of a midweek round against Fiorentina and he may take this as an opportunity to drop players he considers to be off form.

“In the first half Genoa adapted well to our changes. I complimented Gian Piero Gasperini, as his team played well with discipline and earned a deserved point.

“In the second half we played with a higher defence and pushed a great deal in their midfield, but we also let them relax and take home a point.”

Tennie
Fiorentina are up by 2 goals at halftime against Palermo. First goal (Gilardino) was a hand ball.
KillerMax
The commentator is funny... "Frey backpedals and lets the ball go into his area..." biggrin.gif

And he pronounces the word count like... well... You can guess that one yourself... innocentsmily.gif
Tennie
Hrm. Marco Amelia subbed at halftime. Not good for the Azzurri if he's hurt.

And Max, Richard Whittle is a unique commentator. Not my favourite but he gets points for being a Mediaset employee (SerieAtv is owned by mediaset). And at least he's not one of the bigots who works for Fox Soccer Channel. smile.gif
MizNelson
I don't know about that. Listening to Richard Whittle is like having your nose hairs individually removed with hot pokers.

No wonder Inter couldn't beat shorthanded Genoa; looks like they had their mind on, er, other things. wink.gif

One of the things I enjoy reading each week is the Lega Calcio sporting justice reports. Usually these come out on Tuesdays, but this week it came out today because of the midweek games. In the reports, you see who's fined for which offense, who's suspended, who's on the verge of suspension, etc etc etc.

This week's report includes the following:

1. The Gilardino hand ball goal. Lega Calcio reviewed the video evidence and found that it was a deliberate hand ball. They've handed Gila a 2 game suspension, meaning he'll miss Fiorentina's games v. Inter and v. Siena (which is a local Tuscan derby).

2. Pasquale Foggia and Stefano Mauri also got two game bans, these two for mouthing off to the referee after the Lazio-Napoli game.

Fiorentina appealed the suspension, but the appeal has been denied. Gilardino will sit out the next two games. Really unfortunate timing on this -- I've watched it several times and agree with the judgment that it was intentional. It serves Gila right. NOW the Viola have got to step it up. I hope to see young Jovetic play - the kid's got real potential.

Adriano's costly night out
Tuesday 28 October, 2008
There are suggestions that Inter boss Jose Mourinho will drop Brazilian hitman Adriano after he went out to a club until the early hours of Monday.

The [deleted] One was furious after Sunday's stalemate with Genoa and vented his spleen at the players he felt were responsible.

The main culprit in Mourinho's eyes was Argentine marksman Julio Cruz and President Massimo Moratti has admitted that the two men are at loggerheads.

But according to La Stampa, Adriano also singled himself out for a portion of his Coach's rage by going out on Sunday night with Milan star Ronaldinho, who wasn't required to attend training due to an injury.

Although L'Imperatore did manage to make it to training on Monday, he wasn't in good shape and Mourinho was reportedly seething.

The fall from grace of Cruz and Adriano may hand chances to Victor Obinna and Mario Balotelli, but forgotten man Hernan Crespo could also get a look in.

The Argentine international has set foot on the pitch just once this term but has made it clear he will fight for a place in the starting 11.

(Ch.4)

Jesus, when will this jackass ever learn? (And it looks like Dinho hasn't changed much either.)
Jack Sparrow
No Dinho shouldn't be judged at all. Carlo's press conference clearly states that Dinho had permission to party. I don't require Dinho to be a recluse. Just that he follow the rules.
MizNelson
The comment on Dinho was more of an aside. I'm just really surprised Inert continues to even bother with Adriano even though his commitment to football could fit into a walnut shell.
Jack Sparrow
Why is he called Inert?? unsure.gif

The thing with Adriano is, if he can get his head together, he can be very lethal with Inter. Same is the case with us. If Ronaldinho can get his role in the team/if Sheva can get his groove back etc.

I think Mourinho recognises that, and is trying hard to get Adriano back into action. He's tried being nice, and Adriano responded with how Mou is the best coach ever, before heading off to the pub to get piss drunk. Now I guess Mou is gonna be strict.

Inter remind me of Juve pre-Calciopoli... strange favoritism from everywhere. but just like that Juve, Inter have a very strong team. I'm not gonna be a dork and say they win just because the refs and others help them. that's a childish thing to say. IMO:

Strong squad+favoritism=Scudetto after Scudetto
Tennie
I think I'm going to respectfully disagree on this one for now.

It looked like a deliberate hand ball to me and I think they got it right in banning him, even if the timing is somewhat suspect.

If something like this happens again, I'll revise my opinion.

I'm not particularly talking about this one. I'm talking generally. I have seen many suspicious calls for Inter in the past two seasons. last season, I'm sure you remember, the whole Italy were objecting to those refereeing 'mistakes' that favored Inter in many games.
Gila's suspension could be right, I haven't even seen it, but what about what the article says, Ibra's elbow?
Tennie
Oh, on that I agree. The cugini got a lot of calls their way the last couple of seasons, far more than they should have.

The elbow thing was discussed in length in the sporting justice report, but they decided that a suspension wasn't warranted (not sure on the reasoning, the language was really hard for me to translate).

Probably because Zlatan was an Inter player wink.gif Inter fans would have gone crazy if Ibra were to miss this one.

Anyway, this is Channel4's article on Lavezzi, who really is a bomb! cool.gif

QUOTE
Street urchin

Ezequiel Lavezzi is, according to James Horncastle, the perfect Napoli striker embodying the spirit of the city just as Diego Maradona did in the 1980s

A modern street urchin, that’s how La Gazzetta dello Sport described Ezequiel Lavezzi on Monday after the diminutive Argentine conned the crowd into thinking he had scored Napoli’s winner at Lazio on Sunday.

The 23-year-old sprinted to the by-line and rifled the ball across goal where it hit Lazio defender Sebatiano Siviglia and bounced into the net. The smile Lavezzi carried as he ran off to celebrate with his teammates suggested that he had intentionally targeted Siviglia and used him to score.

It’s a wonderful thought and great for Napoli. Lavezzi’s reputation as a Scugnizzo – Neapolitan for loveable rogue – blends well with the image many a Partenopei fan has of himself. In an industry where footballers have become more and more estranged from their fans, it’s fantastic to see someone people can relate to on the pitch every once in a while.

Napoli fans love Lavezzi’s cheekiness, the tricks he pulls that could only have been learned on the streets and – as one Italian journalist pointed out – his little belly, which sticks out like that of an impoverished child’s.

Napoli have a tradition of bringing characters like Lavezzi to the San Paolo and it enriches the experience of supporting the club in a way that signing a player of David Beckham’s nature never could.

Credit should go to President Aurelio De Laurentiis and his director of sport Pierpaolo Marino for building a club fit for the 21st Century that, to some degree, embodies the character of a troubled but beautiful city.

First Omar Sivori, then Diego Maradona and now Lavezzi. They may be slightly different as footballers, but there is continuity in their spirit, which affords them a special place in the hearts of Neapolitans.

Although "The smile Lavezzi carried as he ran off to celebrate with his teammates suggested that he had intentionally targeted Siviglia and used him to score" is pure fantasy!

yeah i justca called a local radio sation regarding this.

basically i was saying the punishment for a deliberate handball is a yellow. now normally when plays are reviewed for disciplinary action it's to catch dirt plays that meritted a red card. then ibra has his suspension overturned rolleyes.gif, how conveniant. and one of the hosts is a intertista, it was fun biggrin.gif
Rossoneri7
On the inter game, Fiorentina were denied a clear penalty ..

Burdisso pulled on Pazzini's shirt in the 18 yard closer to 6 yard box and if Pazzini was not touched he might have converted it, cuz Cesar was on the floor at the time (rebound ball).

It's a rule: pull an attacker's shirt in the 18 yard box and its a penalty.

Lets see if Fiorentina can hold off both inter and the ref innocent.gif

Yeah, especially given the idiotic way in which the penalty was conceded. Were it not for that (grr), he'd have conceded only one goal in three Cup matches.

Here's the 'defensive/boring' Mourinho for you.

So now Inter have gone two games without scoring a goal. Should I come out and say Mourinho's teams play defensive-minded football? No because nothing can come out from a game or two and there's no point in saying he's this or that. I formed my opinion based on what I saw from Chelsea in 3 years, if you don't agree with me that's fine but I don't see where we're going with this...
Zed.D
Trying to play attacking football is one thing, not bothering to play attacking football is another thing. you're confusing these two. Inter dropped points because they couldn't score goals. Mourinho tried 4-3-3 in both games so you can't say he didn't want to attack (unlike Carlo who clearly opts for defensive formations).

And how do you know Inter were 'boring'? did you watch these two games? again, not being able to score goals is one thing, playing boring football is another! I think you're confusing this too. I don't say Inter play like Barcelona, but I haven't found them 'boring' in those couple of games I have seen from them so far. neither did I find Chelsea boring when he was there. if anything, I remember great games like their ties with Barca, especially that 4-2 victory at the Stamford Bridge [3 goals in around 20 minutes].

Anyway, I agree we can't judge someone based on a couple of games. at the end of the season we'll have a look a the statistics...
