Tottenham Make Move For Riquelme

Tottenham have made an offer to Villarreal for Argentine playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme, according to the players agent.

While all the talk is of Spurs' reported plans to sack manager Martin Jol it seems someone at the club is at least still looking to strengthen the side with the arrival of the Argentinean who has fallen out with his La Liga club.

Riquelme spent the second half of last season on loan with Boca Juniors, but a move to another European club seems more likely before the end of the current transfer window as he has still not cleared the air with Villarreal.

Riquelme's representative Marcos Franchi said: "Despite that we haven't been told anything officially, we know that Villarreal has received a very important offer from Tottenham and that the president Fernando Roig is analysing it.

"They have to make a decision before August 31, otherwise Riquelme will stay at Villarreal as there aren't any other serious negotiations.

"If nothing new appears I think that they should accept this offer as it is good for the club and the player.

"I don't think that Riquelme would be useful for Villarreal without playing.

"It would be much more useful for them to sell him so they recover what they invested in him when they bought him."

It is believed the offer is in the region of £10m and is currently being considered by club president Fernando Roig.

If he goes to Spurs .. It will be a very interesting year for the EPL ...

Liverpool, Chelsea, United, Arsenal, Spurs ... I mean, one of the usual suspects would 'most likely' loose a CL seat rolleyes.gif

Tottenham Hotspur are not the only English club interested in Juan Roman Riquelme, according to Sky Sports' Spanish football expert, Guillem Balague.

The Argentina international has been linked with a move to White Hart Lane but Balague warns that whoever captures his signing will have to cater for his needs.

"I believe he is in contact [with Spurs]," Balague told Sky Sports News, "and I also believe that Spurs are not the only club in England that is after Riquelme.

"He is a very special customer - you have to be sure he is happy. If that means he has to be surrounded by people who speak his language then so be it."

Having been at Villarreal for four seasons, the 29-year-old spent five months on loan to Boca Juniors at the end of last season. But Riquelme's future now remains elsewhere.

Balague also sees Riquelme's need to be the tactical focal point as a deciding factor between his next move being a success or not.

"He doesn't adapt that well with clubs that do not play for him," said Balague.

"While Villarreal played for him he was happy, but when they changed their system he wasn't, so he moved to Boca [Juniors].

"Boca don't want him anymore, so it is a huge gamble if anybody wants to take him to England."

That is very true, but he was never fast in the first place ... It is just a part of his game.

I doubt he would be a crucial factor in deciding any team's fate (winning titles), but on a good day he could spark it up a little smile.gif

Moreover, he is too slow for the EPL, but tactically he would be an asset for any team.

Definetly. I see Riquelme as a player that a team seems to need to be build around, rather than him just being put into the team. Villarreal practically put him in their lineup and got the players to fit around him, it worked wonders.

I'd love to see him at Milan as he's a very technically gifted player, having he and Pirlo in the team could possibly even get Gila to score. tongue.gif

He's one of the greatest players there is in my view, just needs to find a coach and an environment that understand the way he plays. Like he has in Argentina... he should stay there cause I love watching him play as he should!

There are very few that would understand him. Alot of managers here are very much "One bad game and you're dropped." It doesn't do much for the confidence, which wouldn't work with Riquelme at all. sad.gif

Well, Villa are having a panic over a defender and we've reportedly made offers for two players:

Porty. Apparently we've gone in for Jose Bosingwa, I've not seen anything of him myself so I can't say how good he is, and there's no value to judge him on either, it just say "his price keeps going up." I can only assume that's because he's good or something? So any good? And how much do you think it'll take to buy him IF they'll sell?

LaPalma. Per Mertesacker is the other guy. We've offered £7m for him, that seems good value for him (If accepted) as I was pleased with him at last years World Cup. Admittedly I've seen almost nothing of him since, so I dunno how the past years been for him. £7m seem good value for money to you? Again, that's if you think Bremen would even sell up.

Mertesacker? Well, IMO 7 Million is by far not enough. Last season Bremen bought him for 5m €, now he's at least worth 15 Million Euro. He's a born leader, he's tall (1,98m), he's young (22), he had a great season with Bremen and he's easily one of the most talented defenders ATM. IMO 20 million Euro would be a more than reasonable price especially considering that Boro paid 9 Million Euro last season for cr@py Robert Huth.

Boro do spend over the odds for average players, stupid them.

I didn't think £7m seemed enough. I'd like to bring him in since we do need some youth at the back. E20m is alot though, would break our transfer record. I'm only assuming Bremen have European football this season, so I'd be surprised to see him come to us, where he won't get it for another 12-months.. Unless the Premier League lures him in. unsure.gif

If Villa can sign him you'd have a great defender in your squad who could already play in any european. But I don't think Bremen will let him go.
About Huth...he's nowhere near Mertesacker, just a guy with strong physics but without Mertesackers abilities. About that transfer costs: EPL right now reallly is where the money is. I couldn't belive my eyes when I saw that Tottenham spent almost 8 Million E on Kevin-Prince Boateng. He's talented but hasn't even proved himself in Berlin.

With the even bigger amounts of tv money than usual given to all EPL teams this season, it's going to benefit clubs around Europe too. Teams in Europe are able to ask for more money for their players, and be able to get it, since the EPL teams have more money.

About Boateng: If he's young, and anybody in England has heard of him, you can bet that he'll end up at Spurs, they buy any youngster available. rolleyes.gif

Boswingwa is the best right-back in Portugal at the moment, by far. (Nelson from Benfica seems to be more worried about his stupid hair-style than playing football)

Apart from Quaresma and Lucho, he's the best in FCPorto. The guy really rocks. Really quick, ofensive (attacking...) and lots of stamina to track back and go up again (not the perfect English here wink.gif ).

Trust me. You won't have to worry about the RB place for the next 5 years (the guy has 25), he's really that good.

The problem is I can see Porto selling him. Only something around 10-15M/euros at least. If Villa don't sign him now... he'll be in Liverpool or ManUtd in 1-2 years IMHO.

PS: Much better than Chelsea's Belletti. Way better.
