BIRMINGHAM City Football Club could be relegated from the Premiership over the police probe at St Andrew's, a leading sports academic said last night.

Blues managing director Karren Brady and co-owner David Sullivan were arrested by officers from the City of London Police economic crime unit on Wednesday.

The force is investigating allegations of corruption among Premiership clubs.

The Birmingham strand of the probe is believed to be centred on the £300,000 transfer of Sengalese star Aliou Sisse, who was sold by Blues to Portsmouth four years ago, and another - unnamed - African player.

The link is thought to be players' agent Willie McKay who represents both footballers. He has also been arrested and bailed by police.

Last night, Professor Ellis Cashmore said: "Blues are putting a brave face but if the police inquiries come to anything, the Football Association could take severe action against the club.

"The FA is effectively omnipotent and could, within its rules, do more or less anything.

"This could involve the deduction of points, relegation or exclusion from domestic competitions, such as the FA Cup, or even European football."

Clown FC really are a complete joke. They're as bad off the field as they are on it. They're cheating and they still can't stay up, that really is bad. Just send them down already, put them out of their misery.

I don't think it's fair to say all clubs cheat. But they're obviously doing alot worse than other clubs as they've got into huge amounts of trouble. The funny thing is, even while cheating, they're still that bad.

I hope they get relegated the normal way, then the FA decides to relegate them from the Championship as their punishment laugh.gif ..one can dream.

NEWCASTLE are close to signing £12million-rated Croatian midfield star Luka Modric.
Dinamo Zagreb vice-chairman Zdravko Mamic jetted into Tyneside on Tuesday and met Toon officials in a hotel to discuss the move.

Modric, 22, has been targeted by a host of European big guns with Chelsea and Arsenal among the favourites to land him.

But Geordies executive director of football Dennis Wise has won the battle.

Modric will join after Euro 2008 and has even hosted a farewell dinner party with Dinamo pals to toast the transfer.

A source close to Modric said: “Mamic came back to Croatia and insisted that Luca is close to moving to Newcastle.

“He always talked about Spain but Portsmouth’s Croatian star Niko Kranjcar has told him to move to England.

"The money Newcastle are offering is fantastic.”

Meanwhile, Toon boss Kevin Keegan is set to offer defender Steven Taylor, 22, a new deal.

This Modric sounds like another over-hyped foreigner to me. If he was half as good as most people were saying he'd end up at a top club. Keegan obviously doesn't have a clue, scoring isn't really their problem, it's the conceeding goals, defenders Keegan, defenders!
Tennie
Actually, Luka Modric is VERY good, Kurt. He could slot into a major club without too much trouble. The thing is -- and I'm sure those who follow Croatian football more closely will correct me if I'm wrong -- that the owner of Dinamo Zagreb is...well, something like Palermo's Zamparini. He'll sell to the highest bidder, basically. And if the Toon are offering more than Barca, to the Toon Modric will go.

FA approves Cardiff for Uefa Cup

Cardiff will represent England in next season's Uefa Cup should they win the FA Cup by beating Portsmouth, the Football Association has confirmed.

Under current FA rules, Cardiff would not automatically qualify for Europe by winning the FA Cup - they would normally qualify via the Welsh Cup.

The FA also decided that the Welsh national anthem would also be played prior to the game at Wembley on 17 May.

Uefa had hinted they would offer Cardiff a wild card should they win.

Uefa communications director William Gaillard said: "We entirely understood the FA's reasons for their regulations and had no problems with them.

"We just believed that if Cardiff did win the cup and were not given qualification for the Uefa Cup then for sporting reasons we would look to offer them a wild card."

BBC

Last time I checked, this was the ENGLISH FA CUP. I hope to hear whistles and jeers aplenty during their anthem, it's wrong that it's even being played, it's wrong that they're even in the competition. dry.gif

@Kurt, I agree with you on the Cardiff issue, but you would think one of the English teams would manage to beat them before they even reached the final tongue.gif ...anyway, here's Wenger blasting Inter:

"Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has spoken of his exasperation at the speculation which refuses to be sated with regards the futures of a number of his players.

In recent months talk has been rife that Internazionale are putting together a bid for Alexander Hleb, following the midfielder's fine displays this season.

A number within the Italian club's ranks have been somewhat candid in expressing their admiration for the Belarus international, a situation that has left Wenger fuming.

The Frenchman admits he is now willing to report any club that he feels is potentially unsettling his players.

Under contract

"If Inter Milan is interested in Alexander Hleb they can call us. I don't know why we have to always respond to this kind of situation," he lamented on Sky Sports News.

"All our players, apart from Mathieu Flamini, are under contract.

"If a club wants to buy a player they can call us, or we will report them to Fifa. It's as simple as that. You never hear me speak of a player who is under contract somewhere else if I am interested in him.

"If I want to buy someone I call the chairman and ask him if he is for sale."

Flamini's future remains the subject of considerable conjecture, with the in-form midfielder's contract to expire in the summer - amidst admiring glances from some of Europe's biggest clubs.

Speculation

Wenger accepts that Flamini's contractual situation will always occupy column inches, but he is adamant that the player will not have his head turned by any other club.

"It's still on schedule. I've always said that the decision will be made at the end of April, in one way or another," he added.

"In this case we do not master the situation, I can understand the speculation. For all the rest I find it completely disrespectful to any other player in our team.

"I can understand the speculation that comes from newspapers but when it comes directly from the clubs, enough is enough. We will report everyone now to Fifa."

Wenger went on to quell reports linking Philippe Senderos with an Emirates Stadium exit in the summer."

Unfortunately they had a very, very easy run-in.

A Chasetown
A Hereford
H Wolves
A Boro
N Barnsley

Away to Boro is the only toughish game, but they're inconsistant and would be beaten by most Championship teams.

As for the Wenger thing, I think he has a right to be annoyed. It's not right to talk about players that are under contract and these clubs should be punished in my opinion.
Locke Lamora
Anyway, I think Portsmouth will do them in the final.
And even if Cardiff should get into the UEFA Cup next season, they are probably not going to make a huge impact...

Why is it? I find it completely disrespectful that the Welsh FA have whined and complained about having the Welsh NA played in the final, when it has nothing to do with them. This competition has nothing to do with Wales, and neither should their NA, it's disrespectful, so I won't be complaing when the Pompey fans disrespect their NA.

What you say about the Welsh FA complaining is idiotic and something I don't agree with. But by ridiculing their national anthem you prove that you're not better than them... let them whistle all they want... do you have to be a **** because they are?

It's nothing to do with a 'we are better than you thing'. If they're going to disrespect us, I would hope the Pompey fans would do the same. Two wrongs does not make a right, I know, but it's nothing more than they deserve. In my opinion, of course.

I won't really disagree there, but there is a difference between what they're doing and what I'm sure our fans will do. Why should we treat them with respect when they disrespect us? I would expect it to be the same if it were the other way round, too. And I would expect it to be this way in everything, not just this instance.

Anyways, big game tomorrow, and it looks like Lampard will not be playing. Great news for United. Maybe Chelsea will lose their 3 year unbeaten home record, too.

Adams has been a key figure behind the scenes at Portsmouth this season, and is said to have done very well in a rather open ended role handed to him by manager Harry Redknapp.

The tall defender, known for his mental toughness and the way he imposed it on the how Arsenal played, was speaking about the Gunners' lack of just that over the last two months.

Defending, in particular, has been spineless of late, as Wenger's boys have let in far too many in crucial matches, including seven against Manchester United in three games and seven against Liverpool in four.

Lead By Example

William Gallas' leadership from the back has also been under the scanner, with suggestions that he has not always come through at tough times.

“I always tried to lead by example [at Arsenal], and get out there and make sure they realised they were playing for the Arsenal," Adams told Setanta Sports.

"I tried to install in the team a kind of ‘over our dead bodies’ kind of attitude."

The Best Defence Wins

He also put the onus fully on Arsenal's defence.

“I just feel that people don’t realise that the best back four win the league," he continued.

"The last two seasons Manchester United have had the best back four and, before that, John Terry and his men were fantastic for two years."

“We’ve kept more clean sheets at Portsmouth than Arsenal have, but I’m not going to question the great man [Wenger]."

Back To The Future?

So the big question is, would he return to Arsenal to help them imbibe just the toughness he had?

“I’ve not been offered nothing here, I’ve not been offered anything elsewhere,” he responded. “I want to keep learning and wherever that takes me it takes me.

“I love the club, it was part of my life for so many years, and if anyone at Arsenal wants to invite me back, I’m willing to give it a shot. I’m fully prepared and willing to do what I have to do.”

I think it's only a mtter of time before he ends up at Arsenal, as a manager. As much as I dislike him, Harry Redknapp is a very good manager, and the experience as his assistant will help TA. If he became assistant to Wenger and then took over when Wenger was done, I'm sure he'd do a fine job.

Maldini is unique, no doubt, but Adams was the closest Arsenal ever had to Maldini.
Besides, I feel that the way Big Tone came back from his alcoholic-hell was one of the greatest come-backs in the history of sports.

Tottenham's new signing Luka Modric has expressed his delight at the prospect of playing Premier League football next season.

The White Hart Lane outfit have agreed a fee believed to be in excess of £15million with Dinamo Zagreb for the 22-year-old Croatia international.

Modric has been interesting the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and, most recently, Newcastle, although he believes Juande Ramos' side are a big club.

With three English teams in the semi-finals of this season's UEFA Champions League, Modric believes the quality of football in England speaks for itself.

"I'm happy to be joining such a big club," Modric said at a press conference in Zagreb.

"It will be a real pleasure to play in the English league which is the best in Europe, with three English clubs in the semi-finals of the Champions League."

Despite losing one of their brightest players, Dinamo sporting director Zoran Mamic was happy with the deal brokered with Spurs.

"Tottenham's president came to Zagreb," said Mamic. "We signed the agreement and everything is in order.

"We're very happy. Luka is leaving for an environment where he's going to progress, while Dinamo showed that we know how to do good deals."

It's still very risky, their record against West Ham is terrible, they've cost them the title on a few occasions, and that's who they play next. But if they win that game, they've won the league, their last game is against Wigan, and with their manager being a Man U 'legend' I'm sure he won't mind losing it on purpose.
