Even if Manchester United scoop the £32m on offer for winning the Champions League, owner Malcolm Glazer will have to tap other revenue streams to service the club's burgeoning debt mountain.
The Red Devils' interest bill swelled to £43m in the 12 months to the end of last June, from around £34m the previous year, according to accounts filed for Glazer's Red Football Limited.

Total debts almost doubled to an eye-watering £612m over the period as Glazer re-financed the loans he took out to fund the £800m takeover. Some of that debt carries an interest rate of close to 11%, the accounts reveal.

The Red Devil Limited numbers though do not include an estimated £150m in 'payment in kind' loans --believed to carry even higher rates of interest.

The figures underline that advancing to the knock-out stage of the Champions League gravy train is becoming increasingly fundamental to Manchester United's financial health.

The club earned nearly £25m for reaching the semi-finals of the tournament last year. The eventual winners, AC Milan, took home £31m.

This Is Money

Doesn't look good for United. From everything I've read on this so far, if they were to finish outside the top 4, they'd be as good as finished. And ideally they need to make the Champions League QFs every year. United look like they're in big trouble. smile.gif

I never understood why so many people are having a problem with Christian Poulsen. He's a great DM who plays very physical sometimes. Yes he's not a nun, but Rino isn't either. And Tottis victim theory was a joke from the beginning.
*

Well, I don't really have a grudge on him ... But he is a very dirty player. I mean, when Shalke came to the San Siro, he was snapping at Kaka's legs every damn time he got close to him ! It was unbelievable!

Gennaro, well he is a very physical player, but a correct one. He doesn't go for the player's legs, rather the ball. He doesn't get yellow carded much, despite the aura that surrounds him he is a sports man.

This is why I have a problem with Materazzi

The Women's FA Cup Final was played yesterday, so maybe it was that? They won their league impressively though. They won all but 1 game, which they drew! Incredible - They get huge financial backing from the mens team though, so they just buy all the best players, it's so one-sided. laugh.gif

@Locke: It's funny, 3 of the 'most similar' videos on that YouTube page are: Shevchenko headbutts Materazzi, Zidane headbutts Materazzi and Delvecchio headbutts Materazzi. People often look at one side and not the other, he gives as good as he gets! I don't condone elbows or anything, but the kicks and that he often gives out happen everywhere, nothing wrong with a bit of physical marking. Afterall Sheva is probably one of my top 3 all-time favourite players, so it's not like I'm biased towards Matrix or anything. tongue.gif

That doesn't make sense...if he gets headbutted by Shevchenko, why should he take revenge by smashing up Sorin? And Zidane and Delvecchio headbutted him long after Shevchenko did, and it's not like Materazzi has only done this to Sorin and Shevchenko...remember all those times against Pippo? Or when he kicked Rui Costa in the chest while Costa was on the ground?
Oh, and at least 20 identical cases against players from different clubs.

I'm not saying the Sorin thing was in retaliation to what had happended to him elsewhere. I am just saying that people are as bad to Materazzi as he is to others, and he gets unfairy punished because of his name. Like I've said before, if ANY other person on earth did what Materazzi did in the CL at Anfield, none would have got a yellow card, forget being sent off.

It happens all the time As I've said plenty of times, he gives it as good as he gets, as proved to be by the amount of incidents he'd been involved in - by doing them or being on the receiving end - I'm not interested in continuing it as he's an Inter player and will obviously be seen as the criminal of the peice no matter what and I've had too many arguements over it on here.
Tennie
I think Kurt has a point. Matrix has a reputation for being a dirty player and is sometimes unfairly carded/sent off because of the reputation not because he actually slugged player x. It's similar to Pippo's reputation for diving -- yes, he's done it in the past, but he doesn't necessarily dive every single time. Sometimes the opposing defenders really do pull him down.

QUOTE (kurtsimonw @ May 6 2008, 03:29 PM)
What Poulsen and Matrix do on the football field is normal. If they do something bad they're punished with a free-kick against them, or possibly a yellow or red card. If neither of the 3 is given, then they haven't done anything wrong.
*

What does punishment has to do with the action? Are you telling me that whenever someone is not shown a yellow card it's because what he did was not worthy of one? Then welcome to the football world, I guess it's your first day here... it's obvious that not every action that should be, is punished as well as not every action that is punished, should be...

Materazzi did not get this reputation for nothing... many times he gets away with it. There are many times he should have been shown a straight red and he was not even given a yellow... but that's not his fault, it's the ref's. What annoys me about him is his "technical" tackles... I've been playing as a defender my whole life and I can tell you (maybe you know it too) that there are many ways to really hurt your opponent without getting red carded. You should be red carded but the ref cannot see the way you hit your opponent nor can he calculate the power you hit someone with.

Also...

... don't you think it's weird that he's been headbutted so many times? He must have done something wrong, it can't be that so many players are against him for nothing... it's just not logical! Of course he's hard and there are many other players that are hard (even harder) out there but what's bad about him is that he's dirty... I'd really like to hear your explanation as to why so many players have arched their back against him... I'm not saying that what they did was the right thing to do or better than what he does. If it was a single player that had it in for him then I would not say anything but when there are so many, you can't tell me that all of them are crazy and Materazzi has done anything to turn them mad...

And...

This is the only thing we agree on... he should not have been sent off (not even yellow carded in my view) for those incidents. This is because he cannot brush off this tag he has and I believe he did not get it for nothing.

To conclude on what I think about Materazzi, he has become (he was not) a good (not bad but not close to great either) defender and also is not dirty anymore... thing is, people don't forget...

I believe this is the case most of the time, yes. Maybe not so much with the smaller incidents. But when it comes to bad fouls or red cards, if they're unjust 99% of the time they're overturned. Fouling is a part of football and if Matrix was to do something very bad, the ref will send him off as his punishment, if the ref doesn't send him off, that's his fault, not Materazzi's.

You know ways to not get red carded when you should? Surely this is what Matrix is doing when he gets away with it? So surely he's doing no different to you. But I also started out as a CB, and not roughing up the strikers is a bad thing.

But couldn't it also be said for Kaka'? Alot of players have been a bit overly physical with him, surely he must have done something wrong to deserve it? But this isn't the case.

Well, I think that if the refs showed a yellow card for every incident they should give one for then there'd be more games with 7+ cards shown... how many times have you seen a ref not give a yellow for diving in the penalty area and how many times have you seen a yellow carded not shown because it would be the second one on the same player? I think it happens all the time but that does not mean that these incidents are not punishable.

I'm not sure that's what Matrix does I'm just saying there is a way to do it. I also said that he must be doing something wrong, do you think people get angry at him just because he smells bad or something? Also, I did not say I use these "techniques"... innocent.gif biggrin.gif But of course if I did I would be no better than anyone else that does...

I think Kaka and Matrix, as players, have nothing in common... players get rough on Kaka because he's an attacking player and they want to stop him... I don't think people are trying to stop Materazzi from stopping them...

Manchester City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has held talks with Portuguese club Benfica about returning there for a third spell as coach.

A Benfica statement confirmed talks had taken place, but said: "No details of the contract, namely salaries and timing, have been discussed."

Eriksson said: "I'm considering the offer and it could be a step forward in my career - let's see what happens."

BBC Sport understands Eriksson has been told by City he will be sacked.

On Wednesday, City owner Thaksin Shinawatra claimed he would not make a decision on the Swede's future until the end of the season.

However, BBC Sport has also learned that Portugal boss Luiz Felipe Scolari has already been approached by the club as the Swede's replacement.

Eriksson met Benfica president Luis Felipe Vieira and their new director of football, Rui Costa, in Manchester on Wednesday.

BBC Radio 5 Live football correspondent Jonathan Legard said Eriksson's meeting made it clear what he thought of his future chances at Eastlands.

"Eriksson's current boss may have refused to confirm or deny whether he was about to be sacked, but his meeting in Manchester, captured by Portuguese television, clearly shows what he believes is about to happen," he said.

"The move for Scolari, despite the denials by his agent, indicate Eriksson's imminent departure. I understand however, that Eriksson won't be rushed on a decision about a return to Benfica."

Thaksin Shinawatra will wait until the end of the season to make a decision
Eriksson has coached Benfica twice, leading them to two championships and a domestic cup in the early 1980s.

He then went to Italy but returned to Benfica in 1989, taking the club to the 1990 European Cup final, a game they lost to AC Milan, before winning the Portuguese title in 1991.

Benfica risk missing out on a Champions League spot for next season after a disappointing season. They are fourth in the SuperLiga, three points behind rivals Sporting Lisbon.

City, meanwhile, lie ninth in the Premier League ahead of Sunday's final game against Middlesbrough - which looks certain to be Eriksson's last league match in charge.

Scolari and former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho have been linked with the job at City but Thaksin would not be drawn on who might be in charge next season, only saying: "They all - Sven, Scolari, Mourinho - they are great coaches, great managers."

However, he did say he had told Eriksson he was unhappy with City's mid-season dip in form which saw them fall out of contention for European football.

"During the season, we may complain for improvement but that's normal for every club," he said.

"But we will discuss at the end of the season what needs to be changed, what needs to be added to the success of the club."

BBC Sport understands contact has already been made between City and Scolari's representatives in a bid to bring the Portugal boss to Eastlands, with a deal worth a reported £3.2m-a-year ready to be rubber-stamped.

606: DEBATE
Is Scolari the right man for Man City?

Scolari, 59, is believed to be interested in succeeding Eriksson - but wants to wait until after Euro 2008 before making a decision.

Scolari has also previously been reluctant to uproot his family from Portugal and cited intrusion into his private life as one of the reasons he rejected the chance to succeed Eriksson as England coach in 2006.

Thaksin, on the other hand, is thought to want a swift answer from Scolari.

City fans have reacted angrily to Eriksson's imminent departure and Thaksin hopes to head off further unrest with a quick announcement that he has captured the man who won the World Cup with Brazil in 2002.

Despite his treatment at the hands of Shinawatra, Eriksson is willing to lead City on their post-season tour of Thailand and Hong Kong next week, a source close to the Swede has told BBC Sport.

The source said it was "business as usual" for Eriksson and his coaching team and that no further talks were planned with Shinawatra before the end of the season.

If City fail to land Scolari, they are likely to turn their attention to Slaven Bilic, even though he signed a new contract with Croatia last week.

BBC

What a bad, bad owner he's been. He gave Sven alot of money, and Sven turned his team from relegation candidates to a team that's just missed out on Europe. Maybe with the £70m or so that they spent they should have done alot better, but to sack him after one season is stupid. Good on you Sven for talking with Benfica, you deserve better than this d!ck.

Wigans pitch is usually poor. A combination of the floods they had earlier in the year and the fact that the rubgy team uses the same pitch. 2 & 3: The top team in the 'Fair Play' table for each league in Europe is placed in a draw, 2 teams are drawn out and get into the UEFA Cup.

I really am starting to think Villa are unlucky. The last 2 times we've finished 6th, we've not got into Europe, when usually the top 8 is enough to at least get into the InterToto Cup. and if Blackburn win and we don't at the weekend, we'll be the only team in the top 9 not in Europe, even though we'll finish 7th! mad.gif

If he was to leave, I'd prefer it to be to Chelsea of the 3. I think the links between Liverpool and Villa have been well and truly broken after this, so I think we'll just refuse to sell to them. The last weekend of the Premier League season, and only 3 of the 10 games are 'meaningless'. One of the best ends to a season in recent memory.

Birmingham v Blackburn
For Birmingham: A win + other results going their way means they can stay up, so they will be fighting for this win. Their home record is decent.
For Blackburn: A win + Villa not winning will mean they will take the InterToto spot. They're playing well.
Prediction: 1-1

Chelsea v Bolton
For Chelsea: Need a win + United to drop points to win the league. Not lost at the Bridge for 3 years and unbeaten in 20 EPL games.
For Bolton: Only they conceed around 20 goals, they'll be stopping in the EPL. Not really anything to play for, but playing better recently.
Prediction: 3-0

Derby v Reading
For Derby: Pride. Only won 1 in 37, confirming them as the worst team in EPL history. But if they are to win a game, Reading is the team to beat.
For Reading: They need to win and hope Fulham don't to stay up. Haven't scored a goal in over 9 hours. Surely this will change against Derby?
Prediction: 1-3

Everton v Newcastle
For Everton: A point secures them 5th spot + UEFA Cup football. Playing poorly lately, only 1 win in 6. Good home record.
For Newcastle: Nothing to play for. But only 1 defeat in the last 6.
Prediction: 2-1

Middlesbrough v Man City
For Boro: Nothing to play for but points. Playing well recently,
For Man City: Nothing to play for either. Terrible away from home.
Prediction: 2-0

Portsmouth v Fulham
For Pompey: The only concern for this is to not pick up injuries or suspension before their FA Cup Final.
For Fulham: A win and they spend another season in the Premier League. Won 3 of the last 4, including the last 2 - they've never won 3 EPL games in a row.
Prediction: 0-1

Sunderland v Arsenal
For Sunderland: Keane has told the players that if they don't perform, they're out. So they're playing for their jobs.
For Arsenal: Nothing to play for.
Prediction: 1-2

Tottenham v Liverpool
For Spurs: A win + West Ham draw/loss would mean they finish in the top half. But nothing to really play for.
For Liverpool: Nothing to play for.
Prediction: 1-2

West Ham v Aston Villa
For West Ham: A win would mean a top half finish. The club is in a bad way and manager Alan Curbishley will get a break from the boo boys as they 'welcome back' Nigel Reo-Coker.
For Villa: A win means they will qualify for the InterToto, a win AND Everton defeat means they'll finish 5th and take the UEFA Cup spot. Only lost 4 away games this season. Marlon Harewood and Nigel Reo-Coker return to their former club for the first time.
Prediction: 1-1

Wigan v Man Utd
For Wigan: Playing very well of late. Will look to end Uniteds title dream, but would Steve Bruce really want to?
For United: A win and they are Premier League Champions for a 10th time. Have only won 1 away game since March 1st, and that was at Derby.
Prediction: 0-2

After being stuffed 8-1 by Boro yesterday, things look like they will get worse for Man City. The red card given to Richard Dunne yesterday looks to have knocked them off the top of the Fair Play table, so they are likely to have lost theit UEFA Cup place. Fulham, who survived relegation by goal difference after winning their last 3 straight, will be the team to get it.
