who?
Lothar Matthäus. Fifa world player of the years 1990 and 1991, Ballon d'or winner of 1991. European champions 1980, World Cup winner 1990, germanies most capped player ever and the person on the planet who played the most WC matches.
Is it really that long ago that he retired?

All I remember about Matthaus is him coming off the field in the 1999 European Cup Final, very late on, with his team winning 1-0.. the rest, as they say, is history.

Still Ottmar Hitzfelds biggest mistake ever.

Just doesn't make sense really. There's no room for sentiment in football, unless the game is clearly over. But 1-0 up in a huge game against a team renowned for scoring late goals, you take off one of you best defensive minded players? Madness!
Just saw the highlights of Bordaux-Bayern, looked a great game.

Nothing to do with you, don't take it personally. Rangers came for a friendly at VP a while back, we went 2-0 up and the travelling support basically trashed the stadium and attacked women and children at the stadium,
Don't hold speculative media reports against this club - there is a small hooligan element which has attached itself to the club and has tarnished the reputation of thousands/millions of good supporters.
One alleged incident does not represent Rangers just like not all Man Utd fans are thugs following their clashes with Roma fans.

So, all in all, not a bad week in Europe for the Italian teams. 3 wins and a draw. I'll admit that I'm a little happily surprised (especially because I was in the 'Real's gonna kill us' camp).

Oh, it's not a report or something that supposedly happened. I know people who were at the game, it happened alright. I generally find the Glasgow support is terrible, not just Rangers as Celtic are as bad. It was like a nuclear bomb had gone off in Manchester after the UEFA Cup Final.

So would the relatives of the 39 Juventini who were killed in Heysel. Or the populace of Marseille when the English fans went rampaging around the city. Or even the family of the boy killed in the clash between Leeds and Birmingham hooligans in '85.
Out of the 100 000 Rangers fans taking the trip, only 49 were actually arrested, and while the number of rioters was certainly much higher, come on, do you REALLY think ever single one of them took part in the sacking?

It'll be interesting to see what effect it has on Matchday 6 this year, for dirtyrottenscousers-Fiorentina. Not that the Viola fans are likely to do much on behalf of the Juventini, but Cesare Prandelli played for Juve at Heysel. He won't have forgotten.

Is it really so much worse of me to point out the events mentioned above than you naming every single Rangers fan who travelled to Manchester for the 2008 final thugs and barbarians?
I don't consider it particularly "English" to riot around in foreign cities, but neither do I consider this new self-pity emerging as anything very "English" either, you've got to be able to face arguements such as the ones I made above without throwing a "They're picking on us again" tantrum and retreating behind a wall of bitter sarcasm.

Locke, I think you'll find I had made a post in reply to what you said to show my side of the argument and it would also show the reasoning behind my 'England is the root of all evil comment'. Topping our group is key, if current results hold, we'd play a team out of this group:
Wolfsburg

Dynamo/Rubin Kazan (I think Inter will finish 2nd, if they do we can't draw them in the round of 16)
Unirea Urziceni
Olympiacos
and maybe Liverpool if they finish 2nd.
