FC Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard has been banned from the touchline for two UEFA club competition matches for improper conduct after his dismissal in the UEFA Champions League tie against Olympique Lyonnais in France on 27 November.

UEFA are still to announce what punishment Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will receive for being sent off during his side's defeat by Sevilla last month.

Wenger has also missed one match already and could face a harsher sanction than Rijkaard after failing to retreat all the way to the stands following his 80th minute dismissal.

QUOTE
Last season's finalists - AC Milan and Liverpool - could face each other in the second round of the Champions League for their third meeting in four seasons.

The two clubs, which have won Europe's top club trophy a combined 12 times, are among the 16 teams in Friday's draw for the first knockout round.

Milan beat Liverpool 2-1 in Athens, Greece, in May for its seventh title, two seasons after the English club came from 3-0 down at halftime to draw 3-3 and then edge the Italian team on penalties.

Friday's draw in Nyon, Switzerland, pits the eight group winners against the eight runners-up, meaning there could also be a repeat of the 2006 final between FC Barcelona and Arsenal.

The eight group winners are FC Porto, Chelsea, Real Madrid, AC Milan, Barcelona, Manchester United, Inter Milan and Sevilla. They will meet runners-up Liverpool, Schalke, Olympiakos, Celtic, Lyon, AS Roma, Fenerbahce and Arsenal.

Because teams from the same country or same first-round group can't face each other, the four English Premier League survivors won't meet each other. Neither will the three Serie A or three Spanish league teams.

"There are a few teams that could be dangerous and would be better to avoid like Liverpool, Arsenal and Lyon," Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti said. "We'll see, but luckily we have the advantage of playing the second game at home."

Five-time champion Liverpool, which had been on the verge of early elimination this season, thrashed Marseille 4-0 to reach the last 16.

"These are good times for us at the moment," Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez said then. "We are playing well and with confidence. It's not a problem who we play against now. All of them are good sides but we are just enjoying ourselves."

The draw format means group winner and English champion Manchester United is limited to meeting Schalke, Olympiakos, Celtic, Lyon or Fenerbahce, which appears comparatively easy.

Premier League leader Arsenal, however, could face any of FC Porto, Real Madrid, AC Milan, Barcelona or Inter Milan, which looks far tougher.

"I feel for us maybe it is not necessarily a disadvantage to play the big clubs," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. "At least the big clubs will play (soccer) as well."

Scottish champion and standings leader Celtic can't face AC Milan, having played the defending champion in the group phase. But Gordon Strachan's team could get Inter Milan, which is the Serie A champion and standings leader. That would be a repeat of the 1967 final, which Celtic won 2-1 in Lisbon.

Strachan could also face his former manager Alex Ferguson, if the Hoops draw Manchester United.

Although the two Scots had a fallout, Strachan, who played for Ferguson both at Aberdeen and Manchester United, says they are friendly again.

"I said he was a bully but I never said I didn't like him," Strachan said. "He was good for me. He's good for anyone who's worked with him. Unless you're weak-minded then you'll have a problem, he'll probably crush you. You'd have to go and find another job somewhere, or find a psychiatrist.

"I think he's the best manager of all-time."

The first legs of the knockout round are Feb. 19 and 20, with the return games on March 4-5. The group winners have the advantage of playing the second legs at home.

The draw for the 32 teams in the UEFA Cup will also be held Friday. The field includes eight clubs which finished third in their Champions League groups: Marseille, Rosenborg, Werder Bremen, Benfica, Rangers, Sporting Lisbon, PSV Eindhoven and Slavia Prague.

YEAH! they have a very good team. but I'm not concerned! they badly lack experience. we can qualify!

Real against a Roma-based team and Barca against a Scottish team again!

Yes! I had a feeling we'd draw Arse after Carlo laid into them earlier in the season. I can't wait for this - definitely going to get tickets for the game at the Emirates!
dst
Damn it, not Arsenal! They are the only other team in Europe that I like. At least Inter drew Liverpool so one of the two will be out soon! biggrin.gif I think it will be Inter...

So I guess the following teams will advance:

Celtic v Barcelona : Barcelona
Lyon v Manchester United : United
Schalke v Porto : Schalke
Liverpool v Inter : Liverpool
Roma v Real Madrid : Real. But this is a tough one, I hope Roma go through!
Arsenal v Milan : Milan
Olympiacos v Chelsea : Chelsea
Fenerbahce v Sevilla : Sevilla

Yep. pretty much.

Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti doubts that Arsenal are ready to win the Champions League.

There has been much said recently about whether or not Arsenal are ready to survive the difficult months of March and April in their quest for titles.

The likes of Sir Alex Ferguson and Steven Gerrard have raised questions over the past month, and the latest round of doubts come from Italy.

Carlo Ancelotti, who has won the Champions League twice as a player and twice as a coach, has doubts over Arsenal's preparedness for what lies in store.

“Arsenal play well and are getting excellent results — but the Champions League is decided in spring," he said.

“It’s necessary to know how to handle the pressure and tension in the best way.

“I am not sure they are trained for this.”

Not sure if he really believes this, but it should add a bit of extra spice to the tie!
Tennie
Interesting draw.

I think I'll become an honorary Scouser for two evenings (sorry, dst!). The Liverpool-Inter games should be interesting matchups.

As for Arsenal-Milan, those should also be very interesting ties. Arsenal are a very good side with some awfully good players (Fabregas, for example). They'll certainly play open football and won't park the bus in front of goal like a lot of Serie A teams do against Milan. The Arsenal fans that I know think they've been handed an easy tie because they think the Milan defense is too old to keep up (the example I've been given is that Walcott will run rings around Maldini). I don't necessarily agree with that assertion and in turn asked my friend how the Arsenal defense would stop Kaka and Pippo smile.gif. I think it'll be a very even couple of matches, all in all, but I think that Milan have a good chance of coming through.
han2503
Hopefully they will still be fighting it out with Man U and Chelsea for the title so they will be focused on the league also and won't be able to rest any players.

I think it's safe to say that we are out of the running for the league, so this will give us a chance to rest a couple of players before the tie. Arsenal are a fast team and we have a slow defence, so we'll need to be very prepared for this one

Heard that a couple of times also rolleyes.gif

Yes we'll need to watch out because they are a fast team. But as you said they will open up a lot, even though I think they will man mark Kaka. I would put Rino or Ambro on Cesc. But I think this could be an advantage for us, especially since the first leg Arsenal are at home, so they will try to go for it more then us which will leave us to play on the counter.

All the stuff about how we're old and slow is the exact same copy of what we heard about the ties against Man U last season and in the end we humiliated them. So who know. I think both teams have got an equal chance of progressing.

Milan are only competing in the CL and you know it, we gave up on Serie A before the season even started. "Competing for a CL spot" that, to me, is a contradiction in itself. When you're talking about a team like Milan, then saying we actually need to try and finish 4th, it just says we aren't trying as hard as we can in the league.

Hopefully we win the CL again this year and finally compete in the league!

But no worries .. by that time, Milan should be at the best possible form.

I'm not saying it will be easy, all I'm saying is that a couple of the weeks into the season we were considering 4th as an 'acceptable season' and that's what we were aiming for. I agree that 4th is acceptable, but it's also the minimum expectation, we should be aiming higher than that.

Anyways, back on topic. Most ties look pretty good and are quite evenly matched. I would say Barca would kill Celtic, but they knocked them out lasttime they met. rolleyes.gif

No they won't. Han seems to think so too but I don't know where you're getting this idea from. Wenger might have been a promoter of attacking football but his team didn't reach the CL final playing attacking football. And I don't remember Arsenal being all attacking in the big league games ever since either. Of course they're not playing like the small sides do in San Siro but I don't expect to give us any space.

In attack they need van Persie. If the Dutch is injured and Adebayor plays up front alone then we might as well rest Nesta and Maldini!

As for Walcott running rings around Maldini... yeah, like CR did last season!

Kaka is the man to watch in this game again of course... he undoubtedly will find some space a couple of times in 90 minutes and we all know he doesn't need more than that to make a difference!

In any case, Arsenal are a great team but they lack CL experience - especially compared to Milan. There's still two months till the first leg kicks off and I know it's not going to be a walk in the park for our players but I want to be optimistic.

I wanted a 'small' team in 1/8 because we are usually in better form towards 1/4,
but it's definetely going to be an interesting 2 games. We have to make a good run in Serie A during the next two month in order to concentrate on CL and be able to rest key players before the european games. Injuries can be crucial too. We have to watch out because some of our main player are unreplaceable. Hopefully Ronaldo and maybe Pato will be in good form and available.
We have to (especially in away game) impose our slow tempo on them and of course our experience advatage is very importont . Their away form in CL in the last few years are not that good and I think, overall, it will be like United's scenario last year: close game at Ashburton Grove and confident win at San Siro.

Celtic v Barcelona : Barca
Lyon v United : United
Schalke v Porto : Porto
Liverpool v Inter : Liverpool
Roma v Real Madrid : Roma
Arsenal v Milan : Milan

Fenerbahce v Sevilla : Sevilla

Carletto wary of Gunners

Milan boss Carlo Ancelotti admits that Arsenal are a fearsome proposition in the last 16 of the Champions League.

The Rossoneri avoided old enemies Liverpool, but they have a considerable task ahead when they play the Premier League leaders.

“They are one of the scariest sides in this draw,” Ancelotti remarked to journalists.

“They are technically superior to Liverpool, but they don’t have the same level of experience in this competition.

“This Milan side has never encountered a side from London. Arsenal have a very young team, full of promise and quality.

“At the moment they are leading the League, but after a very positive start to the campaign they have slowed a little.

Ancelotti concluded by choosing the man he sees as the Gunners’ most dangerous threat.

“I especially have great respect for Cesc Fabregas who is think is one of the best midfielders in the world at the moment,” Carletto said.

I haven't watched that many Arsenal games this season to make a full judgment.

But I think they will give us space to counter when they are playing at home. And I don't think we can compare how the Arsenal of 06 played to this Arsenal, just like we can't compare the Milan of 06 to this Milan, even if both teams do still have basically the same players. Although Arsenal have lost Henry, they have players like Cesc that have matured. So I don't think we can really compare.

Thankfully we have the second leg at home, Carlo usually plays these ties perfectly so that gives me confidence.

The game will mostly be won in the midfield. If we manage to take control I think we can go through
