I can tell when I see a great potential! the first second I saw highlights of Pato's Inter games I knew he was special. same for Santon. time will tell.
@ Jack
Scale up?! did you expect him to play like the best LB in the world does?!

for god's sake, he's 18. he hasn't even played 10 games yet. still, he comes and plays against Milan and Man U and doesn't lose Inter the game! don't you see that? that's amazing!
Anyone can tell he has to improve a lot. that's like the most obvious thing. we're talking about a potential. not an already world class player.
Santon's performance against Man U: average.
Santon's performance against Man U as an 18yo with no experience at all: amazing.
Hardly. I didn't expect him to play like the best LB in the world. But I did expect him to show some glimpses of the future. Some kinda uniqueness or specialty that would mark him out as special. I saw a 18 year old kid go out, make his CL debut, do alright, nothing great. About a 6.5-7.5 match rating. So what's your point? That he's got mental character? Great! Good for him. But it still proves nothing.
Yes defensively he was solid, and didn't make any serious mistakes.
And this line totally gets me. He 'doesn't' lose Inter the game. That's a sign of greatness?
Like when Pato flipped the ball up onto his shoulder and went with it. That's a sign of serious talent.
I mean, in Santon didn't see extra offensive ability. Any sign of keeping his team in when the defence was a mess in the first half. Doing more than his share of work. Nothing. Inter were playing a diamond mid-field, which means the fullbacks are supposed to provide width. I honestly didn't see that. In fact, take a look at Santon again and tell me what makes him so different from someone like Jonny Evans. Evans made his debut in the CL at the same age against Roma in 2007, and now he's doing great for Manchester as first change CB.
I could argue Evans was even better, going to an away ground and replacing Nemanja Vidic in the most dominant defensive pairing in Europe. Taking on supposedly the world's best player (in Mourinho's book and really keeping him in check etc.
They've both got equal potential, but nothing to suggest they're the future world numero uno. It would take 2 or 3 more seasons to predict where they're headed. Unlike a certain Pato.
Of course, if Santon were to work hard and truly become two-footed etc. that's something. In other words, he's got work to do. It's not like Pato, where he can keep playing and he just needs to develop game smarts. Santon's got a lot of deficiencies skill-wise and gameplay-wise at this stage.
That being said respect to Mourinho for playing him. I could be uncharitable and say the reputation-conscious Mourinho was playing the one Italian player he had and could fit in, but that's totally unfair. If Mourinho keeps at him, and makes sure he's developing, this boy could be special by 24 or 25.
And yes...Carlo would never have played Santon. Coz Carlo only deals in finished products. Milan would have farmed out someone like Santon to play regularly elsewhere and develop. Just like we did with Paloschi.
I'm not saying either is right. They're different philosophies.
