I love Spalletti's football. it's really sexy biggrin.gif he's one of my two favorite candidates for Carlo's job!

That ref should not be allowed to officiate ever again, how can you give a second yellow to a player for taking a quick free kick? Ridiculous.

Note: The English speaking commentators should learn how to use the word absolutely... you lose every sense of proportion if you listen to them as they think everything is "absolutely fantastic / brilliant"... for ****s sake! rolleyes.gif

And by the way, the Star Sports commentators were absolutely disrespectful towards Roma, sniping at them with every chance.

it really makes me sick how poor of a call that was. the ref missed hand to ball which could of been a penalty for pool, but then missed two clear handballs later on so overall athleti was robbed.

I still don't think it's yellow card worthy. Usually most refs just ask the players to re-take the freekick if they take it early when they're asked not to

Gourcuff goal not yet up on SoccerPulse. I'm really eager to watch that one, I hope it's a good goal.

Just watched the Pool penalty. I think it's a 50-50 call; you can give it and not give it.

Yeah, maybe. but it was good to see the arrogants being humiliated. wink.gif

Well that opens up Group A real bad. sad.gif I can't really decide between the three: Chelsea, Roma and Bordeaux. I want all three to go through, somehow. Then again, Bordeaux in the UEFA Cup wont be that bad. So would Fiorentina, as I don't think they can finish second ahead of Bayern and Lyon.

We can then have Gilardino and Gorcuff vs Carlo, huh? That would be some fun laugh.gif Hope it happens!

I don't think that's something a referee can say to be honest, quick free-kicks are part of the game.

How much luck are Liverpool having this season, and they still can't win the league. laugh.gif

And gosh. I just noticed - Barca drew with Basel. At Camp Nou.

Congrats to Roma...Forza Italia!

Saw this today on Eurosport's English site. It's a very clever parody of Barack Obama's acceptance speech last night. A cookie to the writers.

QUOTE
After a night of nachos, corndogs, white zinfandel and Jim Beam, a few of the words might be wrong, but this is how ED heard it:

This football season has had many firsts and many stories that will be told for generations. One thing that is on Early Doors's mind this morning is a man who plies his trade at Anfield.

He's a lot like the millions of others who stood in line to argue with a referee except for one thing - Steven George Gerrard is a massive, shameless diver.

He was born just a generation after Spurs' last championship, at a time when there were bubble perms and tight, shiny shorts, when Manchester United couldn't win the league for two reasons - because Dave Sexton was their manager and because they were mostly pissed.

And this morning, I think about all that he's seen during his time in the Liverpool midfield - the heartache and the hope; the struggle and the progress; the times he was told that he couldn't be quite so blatant, and when he pressed on undeterred and won a dodgy penalty: Yes he can.

At a time when diving was seen as the preserve of the foreigners and English players were meant to be honest, he tumbled over, yelled out, and simulated contact. Yes he can.

When there was despair on the terraces and the Champions League final was slipping away, he saw an opportunity to throw himself to the ground in front of a bemused Gattuso, giving his team a new sense of common purpose. Yes he can.

When Liverpool struggled at Bramall Lane, when they were kicked and harrassed by Sheffield United, he somehow turned a scuffed shot into a match-winning penalty and Rafa Benitez's bacon was saved. Yes he can.

Warnock exploded, and yet he stood firm. He faced up to danger and dived again in the return fixture at Anfield. He converted the spot-kick and the Blades went down. Yes he can.

When the goals flew past our national team goalkeeper and tyranny threatened our Euro 2008 hopes, he was there to fling himself to the ground against Hungary and Andorra, and McClaren was saved. Yes he can.

He was there for the conning of Friedel at Blackburn, the mugging of Bolton. When he himself preached to the people that diving was "ruining the game". Yes he can.

Hibbert barely touched him, Clattenburg sent the Evertonian off, and Merseyside was connected by a sense of disbelief. And last night, against Atletico Madrid, he leapt into Mariano Pernia and rolled on the floor, because after 10 years in professional football, through the best of times and the darkest of hours, he knows how skulduggery can change a game's outcome. Yes he can.

Readers, we have come so far. We have seen so much. But there is so much more to come. So this morning, let us ask ourselves - if Cristiano Ronaldo should live to see the next century; if Emmanuel Adebayor should be so lucky to get away with it as long as Steven George Gerrard, what change will they see? What progress will we have made?

This is our chance to answer that call. This is our moment. This is our time - to put our referees' whistles back to work and open doors of opportunity for our divers; to restore parity when we are trailing and promote the cause of cheating; to honour the legacy of Klinsmann, Maradona and Franny Lee and reaffirm that fundamental truth - that if we are shameless enough, we might just get a decision; that while we clutch our shins in mock agony, we hope, and where our cynicism is met with doubt, and people tell us that we can't, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of modern sport:

Yes We Can. Thank you, God bless Stevie G, and may God Bless the gullible referees of the world.

But they do it sometimes. I'm sure you've seen it!

I think players are allowed to take the FKs quickly when they're not near the opponent's penalty area. like when they're in their own half. sometimes they do take them quickly near the area and score goals too [always Henry comes to my mind!], but if the ref tell them to not take them before his whistle, they have to obey it!

Fishdoll alert: psst, zd. Rosetti is refereeing the Arsenal game.

Am looking at the lineups now. Couple of odd choices in the Real-Juve game. Heinze as CB is one (I know Pepe failed a late fitness test but surely they've got someone better than Heinze) and Tiago on for Juve is another (Tiago apparently gave an interview a few days ago in which he said that if he wasn't given more starts, he'd leave Juve).
acid911
Wicked smiley, Tennie. laugh.gif Where did you find it? It looks even better than the shark one!
acid911
I can't for the life of me decide which match to watch primarily? unsure.gif The Fiorentina one (for Gilardino and Bayern stars), or the Madrid and Juventus one (for the sheer intensity). Since I'm streaming, I'll have to toss both of them up. And hopefully Fiorentina win with a Gila hatrick. biggrin.gif Yeah, I like the kid.

Maradona in the stands. dry.gif Does this guy get paid to attend football matches or what? Hasn't he got anything better to do, now that he's the coach of Argentina? Anyway, 0-0 up till the 15th minute, with Juve looking a wee bit nervous. Most of the attacks coming from Madrid.

PS. Juve misses Buffon. No one can replace him, at least for them. sad.gif I wish he played.
kurtsimonw
Celtic 1-0 United. biggrin.gif

Fiorentina also lead Bayern 1-0, Mutu goal.
acid911
Well what do I know. laugh.gif Just as I type my last message Piero scores. 1-0 Juventus.

Del Piero is a god of Juve just as Maldini is a god of Milan! beautiful, classy goal.

Real Madrid players can dream about winning the CL. they don't have what it takes to do that, for the thousandth time.

And oh, Guti's through passes are matched by almost no one as far as I'm concerned! amazing vision he has.
Tennie
Ah. In that case, zd, it should be in honor of Olof Mellberg (psst, Kurt, Mellberg's playing in this one.)

I'll get to see Real-Juve on replay tonight. Hope it's a good one!

Yep, into the last 10 minutes now. United have bought on Berbatov and Rooney, but Celtic still holding on.
