As Milan owner yes...as a politician puke.gif
He`s just reigning for his own benefit and through Mediaset while Prodi was at least trying to do some good governance. Plus he was reigning through the "parliament", but Italys political system is too much of a joke to ever provide some political stability.

Mancio snubbed in Players' Awards laugh.gif

In a shock snub, record-breaking Scudetto winner Roberto Mancini is not among nominees for Coach of the Year in the Oscar del Calcio awards.

The nominations for the Assocalciatori (Players’ Association) awards were revealed today ahead of Monday night’s Oscar del Calcio ceremony.

Despite winning the title with a record number of points and consecutive victories, Inter boss Mancini is not short-listed for the best Coach award.

He was left out in favour of Champions League victor Carlo Ancelotti of Milan, Roma’s Luciano Spalletti and Cesare Prandelli of Fiorentina.

The snub comes in the same weekend as Mancini complained of “prejudice against Inter in the media” and can only increase the tension between the club and the rest of Serie A.

In this case, the players made the votes during the summer pre-season training camps.

Inter are included in other categories, as Julio Cesar battles it out with Sebastien Frey and the now retired Angelo Peruzzi for the Best Goalkeeper award.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic challenges Milan’s Kaka and Adrian Mutu of Fiorentina for the Best Foreigner prize, while Marco Materazzi is up against Philippe Mexes and Alessandro Nesta for Best Defender.

Roma dominate the Best Italian nominees with Daniele De Rossi and Francesco Totti up against Milan midfield maestro Andrea Pirlo.

In a good sign for the future, all the nominations for Best Young Player are homegrown – Viola duo Riccardo Montolivo, Giampaolo Pazzini and former Parma starlet Giuseppe Rossi.

As this is the 11th edition of the Oscar del Calcio, there will also be a special Champion of Champions award based on the 10 winners of the Best Player award from 1997 to 2007.

The viewers of Sportitalia will also vote on the night for Best Goal of 2007 and the Fan Award for favourite player.

Oscar del Calcio 2008 nominees
Best Coach: Ancelotti, Prandelli, Spalletti
Best Referee: Rizzoli, Rosetti, Saccani
Best Goalkeeper: Frey, Julio Cesar, Peruzzi
Best Young Player: Montolivo, Pazzini, Giuseppe Rossi
Best Defender: Materazzi, Mexes, Nesta
Best Italian: De Rossi, Pirlo, Totti
Best Foreigner: Ibrahimovic, Kaka, Mutu
Best Player of 2007: Picked between the winners of Best Italian and Best Foreigner

Hrm. The Zebras have signed Sissoko (til 2012) from the Scousers. They've also signed Stendardo (til June) from Lazio on loan.

EDIT: And they'll have Olof Mellberg next season.

Looks like Liverpool will have to change the words to their "Best midfield in the World" song with Momo leaving!

Shame about Olly, ah well, he deserves it. Hope he does great at Juve. sad.gif

Calcio Oscars Winners:

-Best Player: Kaka
-Best Italian Player: Totti
-Best Foreign Player: Kaka
-Best Coach: Spalletti
-Best Goalkeeper: Peruzzi
-Best Referee: Rosetti
-Best Defender: Materazzi
-Best Young Player: Montolivo wub.gif

Buffon won the 'Fan Award' and Ronaldo has been awarded the 'Champion of the Champions" award for his overall offering to calcio d'Italia or something like that.

Also, Zampagna's goal vs Fiorentina was voted as the best goal.

All awards are well-deserved in my view.

Kaka should buy a new house... just for his personal awards! biggrin.gif

There are articles around about the awards ceremony talking about players and wives/girlfriends and the awkward moment when Ronie + current girl met Julio Cesar + his wife (the wife being a former fiancee of Ronie).

The 'awwww' moment of the article was about Riccardo Montolivo. He brought his mum & dad to the awards ceremony. Kudos to him for that.smile.gif

Palermo v Roma ball boy
Tuesday 29 January, 2008

Palermo President Maurizio Zamparini is launching an appeal against the Roma goal that decided the weekend’s clash at the Stadio Olimpico.

With the game poised at 0-0, the hosts benefited from a quick-witted ball boy who spotted the ball immediately to allow Rodrigo Taddei to take a corner kick before Palermo were ready.

Amantino Mancini headed home what proved to be the only goal of the game while the Rosanero were still trying to adjust after the dismissal of Leandro Rinaudo minutes later and reshuffle the defence.

“I looked back over the rules and they state that the ball boy must return the ball to the player,” Zamparini explained on Europa 7.

As the ball boy put the ball on the trident himself, the goal could technically have been disallowed.

Palermo have sent a fax to the Lega Calcio demanding that the game be declared void and asking for the fixture to be replayed or for the Sicilians to be given a 3-0 win.

There is no precedent for such action in the history of Italian football and it remains to be seen whether further action will be taken, but the episode looks set to stir controversy for weeks to come.

Bruno blasts ‘girly’ calcio

Former Juventus and Torino hard man Pasquale Bruno has dubbed the current breed of Serie A stars as “girly” and hit out at two of calcio’s biggest names.

Bruno was an uncompromising stopper, nicknamed ‘The Animal’ due to his fiery approach to the game during the 1980s and early 1990s.

In a time of great controversy with referees being called into question, Bruno has a unique approach to the debate.

“We certainly don’t have the best referees in the world, as they want us to believe. But the players don’t help them,” he explained in Libero.

“Any touch on a striker is enough for them to go down and shout and cry as if somebody has fouled them.

“Italian strikers today only think about earrings, tattoos, nightclubs and shopping. I have never been able to stand the fakers as they go out there to get others suspended.”

The outspoken Bruno also had harsh words for some of today’s superstars, including Inter’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

“In terms of quality, he is a phenomenon, but as for the rest…” Bruno growled.

“He put his hand in Daniele Dessena’s face, he grabbed Giorgio Chiellini by the neck. Zlatan makes a mockery of the defenders and they don’t teach him a lesson, it’s incredible!

“If I scared men like Marco Van Basten and Gianluca Vialli, imagine what I would do to him. I’d eat him alive!

“As for Alessandro Del Piero, don’t go telling me that he is a superstar. If he is, then what were Lothar Matthäus and Careca? Are they extraterrestrials?”

Tennie
I think he's got a point. There's an awful lot of diving going on in calcio, though it isn't as bad as I've seen in Spain. The 'media boy' image is a lot more prevalent today than it was 20 years ago. And Zlatan is a bit of a thug on the pitch, talent though he may be. The defenders of the 90s were an awful lot more physical than they are now (remember Tassotti elbowing a guy at the world cup and the guy losing a pint of blood? Tassotti did get a hefty ban and in fact never played for the Azzurri after that), but Zlatan would probably do well with a lesson nonetheless.

Ibrahimovic is the best SS in the world. FACT. (And improving his finishing season after season)
Del Piero is a Juventus legend. FACT.

Bruno played for 3 years on Juventus... just that.
Anyway, I'd like to see Bruno (1,81m and 74kg) against Zlatan (1,92m and 84kg).

Dessena is a cvnto and Chiellini almost broke Zlatan's leg. Nothing more to say.

You know, while I agree that Ibrahimovic is one of the best strikers currently playing the game and while I agree that Del Piero is a legend with the Zebras, there may be better ways of stating one's opinion than turning subjective statements into FACTs.

CR is more of a whiney. Ibra is like Cantona really. And you've called the latter a cunto for that reason one too many times.

I'm not saying he's the only one there is, I just think he has reached the level where it becomes annoying. I wonder how we would behave if he had a season like the one CR has...

This has nothing to do with his footballing quality.

Inter beat Juventus 3-2 away and progress to the next round of the Coppa Italia. It was inevitable really, they are a much better team.

I watched the biggest part of the 2nd half. Inter were under a lot of pressure and could have conceded in a couple of occasion but they had their chances too.

Balotelli's 1st should have been canceled for a foul but his 2nd was class!!
Rossoneri7
It was over before it even began sad.gif

Poor Juve ... I hope they get them back in the league mad.gif and help Roma (though I doubt inter would loose ground)
dst
Oh by the way, Camoranesi received a red card for a totally nasty foul on Balotelli. Thumb down.

Earlier today, Udinese lost at 2-1 Catania and were eliminated with 4-4 on aggregate while Lazio beat Fiorentina 2-1 (same result as the 1st leg) at the Stadio Artemio Franchi and went through with 4-2 on aggregate.

So now it's the semis where Inter face Lazio and Roma encounter Catania. 3rd Inter-Roma final in a row? Most probably...

Balotelli To Be Better Than Pato – Former Coach

The former coach of Mario Balotelli has tipped the Inter sensation to become better than Alexandre Pato, however he has warned everyone of the youngster’s temper and personality.

Balotelli is being talked about as one of the most promising talents to come out of Italy for years.

The 17-year-old displayed his potential last night when he scored twice and led the Juventus defence ragged as Inter won 3-2 in Turin in the Coppa Italia.

“I was well aware that he would achieve great things and anyone who knows Mario knows that he has such great ambition to play at the highest level,” his former boss at Serie C2 Lumezzane, Michele Cavalli, told Radio R101.

“But I have to say that he has a difficult character and that has to be taken into account.

“I won’t deny that we frequently had arguments and he also had disagreements with team-mates.”

Balotelli was born in Palermo and is the son of Ghanaian immigrants, but at the age of three he was taken in by an Italian family in Brescia and took their surname, Balotelli, as part of his name.

“He is blessed with the mixture of great agility and co-ordination and he can respond to things that others can’t,” Cavalli continued.

“My advice to Roberto Mancini? I would only say that he should keep playing him because Mario is a unique talent.

“The only difference between Balotelli and Pato is the investment. Inter were lucky to find such a player for a far smaller sum. Mario has a lot of room for improvement, but he could become better than Pato.”

Juve ignite Cassano interest
Saturday 2 February, 2008

Juventus are pondering a summer move for the re-born Antonio Cassano, according to reports in Italy.

The Italian has been a massive hit at Sampdoria following his loan switch from Real Madrid and his impressive form has alerted the big clubs of Serie A.

Although Doria are keen to sign the player on a permanent basis, their request that the gem takes a pay-cut may allow a club like Juventus to hijack their move.

Sampdoria can sign the Bari native from the Liga giants for just £3.5m, but they can only complete the transfer if Cassano takes a cut in salary.

The ex-Roma man currently nets £3m a season, but the Genoa-based outfit are only paying around £850,000 of that sum right now – with Real supplying the rest.

Given that Juventus have a bigger budget than Samp, they would be able to offer Cassano a more attractive contract.

The Old Lady have been linked strongly with Cassano in the past, but were always seemingly put off by his character.

Although doubts still remain over his temperament, Juventus do see Cassano as a possible eventual heir to Alessandro Del Piero.

Inter, Milan and Napoli are also understood to be monitoring Cassano’s situation with a view to a transfer swoop.
