Thiago Silva: I Will Be Milan's New Maldini
The Rossoneri's new signing is keen to emulate the current club captain and defensive legend...
Thiago Silva announced earlier this week that 24-year-old defender Thiago Silva will join the Diavoli next summer, after a long transfer saga that saw a number of clubs vying for his signature concluded in favour of the Milan giants.
The player arrived in Italy today to sort out the details of the deal and complete a medical. The former Fluminense player will not be sent out on loan, according to vice-president Adriano Galliani.
Thiago Silva is expected to sign a four-year deal at the club and made this remark to press in Milan. “I will be the new Maldini,” he boldly declared.
The defender will have to wait until June next year to join up with the club however, as the Rossoneri cannot bring in another non-EU player as their quota is full.

Silva ready for Serie A stage Monday 15 December, 2008
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brazilian defender Thiago Silva insists that he can adapt to life in Serie A quickly to excel for Milan.
The highly rated stopper is close to completing a move to Milan from Fluminense after having a medical at the weekend.
Silva will join Milan's squad for their tour of Dubai after Christmas and is expecting to make an impression on the Rossoneri's struggling defence.
However, he won't be able to play until the New Year as Milan have registered their full complement of non-EU players.
“Alexandre Pato and Kaka are friends of mine and I'm so happy that I will be playing with them,” Silva told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“I know that Italian football is difficult, but I will make sure that I quickly adapt to it.
“I can't wait to make my contribution for the Diavolo and I am looking forward to getting things complete.”

Or a player is applying to become an EU player via citizenship.
I'd like to get rid of Shevchenko, that would free up a non-EU spot.

Naah, they won't get rid of him, and it wouldn't be...well...
I'm not excited about this transfer at all. Last good brazilian defender I know is Lucio, and that's questionable too. Last Serie A defender? Hmh,..go figure...Aldair. Not at all good. Anyone seen Thiago play? I just watched 2 matches in which he appeared. The regular south american 4-4 result...

The Brazilians I speak to praise him to the rooftops, but it means nothing because there's no neutrality in their view.
Like you, I'm not enamoured by this signing at all, and for the very reasons you have given.

I dont' think getting rid of a non-eu player (by selling or loaning or rescinding) frees up a non-eu space during the year. If a non-eu player gets eu status during the year, that might.

Caveat: People seem to think I have an anti-Brazilian bias.
Thiago is said ot be good as a Brazilian cb. Anyone know what that is likely to translate into in terms of Serie A? The general impression I get is that there's not as much emphasis placed on defense - in very general terms - in Brazil as there is in Italy.
kurtsimonw
Dec 15 2008, 09:26 PM
I can't see him being that great to be honest. Can we name any Brazilian centre backs that're good enough for Milan? As Fillipo said, Lucio is probably the best CB of the last decade or so and even he isn't all that.
I'll reserve my judgement until he has played for us, but I'd have much prefered us to buy either Italian or Serie A based, even if it cost us that bit extra.

Gazzetta and Mediaset both are reporting that Milan are interested in buying Sampdoria's Angelo Palombo in January (presumably as a Gattuso fill-in).
They're also hinting that Milan may make a bid in the summer for Udinese's Inler (more of a regista type midfielder).

I'd be more then happy with Angelo Palombo or Paolo Sammarco but if we are looking at Sampadoria Daniele Dessena would be my first choice, but hes to young for Carlo or Galliani so they'll more then likely opt for the safest option being Palombo 27 and Sammarco 25 years of age. But aren't we forgetting that french player we snapped up for Arsenal do we know how injured his is and how long hes even out for after all isnt he meant to be the French equivalent of Gattuso - Flattuso.

I know what you are saying Tennie, but i dont see Abate's defensive positioning. While in theory he could be converted to a RB, i think a Maggio style WB/Winger would be better

We could have bought the other half of Sammarco's contract, but the board in their infinite wisdom thought we would be better off with Emo. Sammarco was also a youth product which made the loss sting that bit more. I very much like Dessena and hope to see him at Milan one day, but i think his co-ownership deal runs for a season after this (unless one buys the other out). Plus i would like to see him spend another season at Doria to mature and gain experience. Then we should move in for the kill
