Rafa: Milan, come get Pennant!Friday 9 January, 2009Despite Liverpool confirming a new contract for Jermaine Pennant “would be very difficult,” Milan guru Adriano Galliani insists they won’t make any January buys.
It had seemed as if the Rossoneri’s interest in winger Pennant was over, but this afternoon manager Rafa Benitez publicly invited a bid.
“I have had a conversation with Jermaine. He is waiting for a good offer and we are waiting for a good offer,” he told the Press Association. “A new contract for him would be very difficult.”
As Pennant is out of contract at the end of this season, the only way to avoid releasing him on a free transfer would be a January sale, with Milan and Real Madrid showing interest.
However, Rossoneri general manager Galliani has dismissed any transfer activity during the January window.
“There are no regrets,” he told Teleradiostereo. “We could not have expected such a long injury lay-off for Alessandro Nesta.
“We have lined up Thiago Silva, a player we were following and wanted with us. We also still believe in Andriy Shevchenko.”
Thiago Silva has been signed from Fluminense, but because he is a non-EU player he cannot play for Milan until June.
The club has in the meantime been linked with a swoop for Roma star Philippe Mexes, which Galliani also shot down.
“We would never insult Roma and I guarantee we will never sign one of their players by taking advantage of a rescission clause.
“Mexes is a great defender, but remember we will have Thiago Silva from June.”
It seems therefore that Milan’s only January transfer will be the arrival of David Beckham from LA Galaxy, even if he on loan until March 9.
“He wanted to test himself against our League and we found a player who will give an important contribution in terms of experience and technique.”
::channel4:: Beckham 'won't extend Milan stay'Friday 9 January, 2009David Beckham’s spokesman has ruled out a permanent move to Milan after former LA Galaxy chief Alexi Lalas’ comments.
Ex-general manager Lalas suggested today that despite a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ between the clubs for a return to the MLS on March 9, he “would be worried about Beckham’s future” if still at Galaxy.
The England international’s spokesman was quick to dispel the already existing rumours that he is looking for a way to extend the loan spell at San Siro.
“Whilst we respect Alexi's right to an opinion, he has not been party to any contractual discussions on the loan agreement to Milan,” insisted spokesman Simon Oliveira.
"As David has said recently, he will be back in the US for March 9 and with LA Galaxy for the start of the MLS season."
Beckham is expected to make his Serie A debut on Sunday evening against Roma at the Stadio Olimpico.
