He's a good guy. Is working on reducing poverty, building social services (centers for abused women and kids, for example), and creating jobs (most recent thing is opening up a fish canning factory) in his home region of Calabria, which has been in a bad slump for years.

I just love this guy.
He just seems like a genuinely straight-up good guy. And he's a great player.

Very good person, if only his football was as good.

btw, the comments were made at the announcement/groundbreaking for a new football pitch/sports center for kids in his home province. His charity's paying for it.

Ace. I love how the Rossoneri players are totally bucking the trend.

First Kaka...when the whole world thought the transfer would go through and usher in a new era. Then Rino with his statement of gladly accepting lower pay. We have heart! Really proud.

Oh..and spare a thought for the Valencia players. They haven't been paid in weeks, and still they go about their business professionally. Max respect to Villa and Silva.

Rino Gattuso has been named ambassador for the Calabria region of Italy. He's already doing publicity ads promoting tourism (+1 cookie to the first person who can get a picture of his face on a London cab) and doing charity work on behalf of the region. Calabria is where he was born and it's one of the poorest parts of the country.

Here's what he said relating to Milan at the press conference today (from acmilan.com's italian page):

[Kaka? The polemics about his injury started with Dunga, not Kaka. I know players from other teams who choose to come to Milan for rehab and that says everything. The daily injury notices are read by Adriano Galliani every day and he is very precise and very much present and there aren't problems. The only problem regarding Kaka was the timing, as the notices said he'd return in 15 days but after, as happens sometime,s the pain didn't disappear in the predicted time. Mourinho? I don't want to get into an argument either with him or anyone else, but close your eyes for a moment and try to imagine what it signifies to have gone through 5 CL finals: 2 as a player and 3 as a coach. Senderos? He's a good guy and I'm happy he was decisive even if I think the goal will be attributed to Ronaldinho. He too has been out for a long time this season. During the course of the year, we've had 7 long-term injuries. Every section has suffered this situation, but there should be some reinforcements in defense.]

WELCOME BACK RINO!

5/12/2009 10:59:00 PM

5 months after the knee operation, Gattuso was back on the pitch for 45 minutes in Tirana. At the end of the match, Rino admitted he was a bit emotional. - HIS DECLARATIONS -

(ON THE PHOTO: GATTUSO ON THE PITCH IN ALBANIA-MILAN 7-8)

TIRANA - Before getting on the plane to return from Tirana, Rino Gattuso talked at the end of the friendly Albania-Milan (7-8 after penalties) in which the Rossonero midfielder came back on the pitch for 45 minutes five months after his knee operation.

Rino, how did it go?
"Well, tonight I was also a bit emotional because going back on the pitch after almost five months you're always scared of getting hurt again, but after a few minutes I regained confidence and it went well."

Are you ready for the league?
"I think I'm not ready to play 90 minutes, but this was an important test for me, I have regained courage. The league is a different thing. I am available to the team and if I can give my contribution I'll be happy, but I'm still lacking match rhythm."

President Berlusconi's declaration on Ancelotti?
"We've talked about it, but we haven't understood whether the president actually said those things because we didn't hear the interview. Even if he said that, however, those are things that concern the club, our Delegate Administrator and the coach. What I know is that Ancelotti is well seen, he wants to stay and we want him to stay. What the president says is the law, no one can say anything, but our season has been conditioned by the many injuries that involved important players for us.
I think Inter deserved the Scudetto and we have to give them compliments.
When I wanted to leave, Adriano Galliani, but also Ancelotti, locked me in Milan's trophy room and convinced me to stay. Now, if necessary, I will lock up Ancelotti... I don't count much, but for us Ancelotti will stay here."

On Beckham and Maldini:
"I spent five months in which I talked a lot with Beckham, I appreciated his professionalism and commitment to the shirt very much. Everytime I see him I see a person who loves his work. Until five months ago I didn't believe it, it was a great surprise and I am happy to have known him.
In these five months I didn't think about my position on the pitch because this knee bothered me a lot and didn't allow me to think about it. It's the same now: there are a lot of players who are doing better me and it's right that they play. At the moment I can only give a small contribution to the team and if I do get the chance to play I will give my maximum. In these months I never thought about my place because when I'm back I'll be the one of before who wants to battle, but I always thought about the good of Milan and reaching the Champions League.
With Paolo I can no longer insist that he not quit, he is the captain, there is a lot of respect. This season he seems like a 30-year-old, each game he fights on every ball, but if he took this decision it's only right."

Berlu's said that Gattuso is the next captain (or something like that). it's on Mediaset, typed in a rather gigantic font size as if it's an important announcement. so I think the captaincy issue is a closed book now. congrats to Rino!

A shame if true. Not only should Ambro be the next captain, he's a better player than Rino, so he's been replaced by somebody who should be on the bench!

GATTUSO SHAVED OFF HIS BEARD!

(from acmilan.com, their translation)

400 TIMES AND MORE
8/23/2009 7:30:00 PM
400 matches with the Rossoneri, celebrated with the captain's armband. A target that in reality is only the starting point of a season of deserved revenge. Good luck Rino!

MILAN - A bulldog, a totem, a gladiator, a lion. There are no more ways to define you. But perhaps in the end only the word 'Rino' is necessary to describe everything: the man, the soul, the pride, the heart, the muscles and the lungs. 'Rino': four letters which, behind their apparent simplicity, hide an immense significance for the Rossoneri people.

Because you, Rino, are Milan. You have shown it in every second of every match: you are the image, enthusiasm, grit and passion of this club which cannot do without you on the pitch or off it. And, finally, yesterday at Siena you managed to achieve a target you have followed a long time, and in a special way: you made your 400th appearence with the Rossoneri with the captain's armband. You were dreaming about this objective for a long time, we know it, and we know you well. Well, it has arrived. And we are sure that for you it will only be a starting point of a season of revenge, very deserved after last season's suffering, after all the effort you made to recover from the surgery to your knee ligaments, after a spring period spent sweating like a madman, fiercely concentrated on your return on the pitch, and after a whole summer spent working.

What will the year be like, Rino? Difficult for the team, because everyone is waiting for us, convinced they will look at us from above. You admitted this yourself without diplomacy, as usual. And probably it will be a difficult year also for you. Because the competition is strong and everyone wants to play. Especially you. You showed it yesterday at Siena when you were substituted: there was no polemic, we understood, there was only desire to continue playing. This honors you.

As fans we can't wait to embrace you again at San Siro in an official match: we don't see you stepping on our stadium's pitch since 7 December, it's been an infinity. Fortunately the derby is close. You asked for enthusiasm and warmth from the fans: our stadium, our home, our people are already calling for you. Do you hear it? It's all for you. You deserve it, champion.

I forgot how it was we can judge (or should I say compare) two players based on how many goals they score, when they're not intended to in the first place. Sure Offensively Ambro is the better player hands down (because he can head really well - so he adds something extra in times of desperate need - say off corners, FKs etc.)
But the two of them Gattuso & Ambrosini are DMs (supposed to be defensive - not goal scorers) and that where I give Gattuso the edge. I think Ambrosini has improved imensely from how sh!ty he once used to be (but can you really blame him - missing all those games over the years - being as injury prone as he is).
Hands down though - if I wanted a DM (which they are both supposed to be...) I would pick Gattuso over Ambrosini (bcuz imo) - he gets the edge. However if between the two I wanted something added to our attack Ambro is definitely the way to go (with those crucial 'headers'!) biggrin.gif wink.gif

han2503
Oh and everyone is making a big deal because Ambro scores goals, but its not like its a gaurantee that he'll score a goal whenever he's on. He gets a goal every ten games. Still does not justify picking him over a better player because of this

It means you're stupid.

But clearly winning the CL twice and Serie A plus more international trophies does not make Carlo that stupid. He became delusional at the end of his run as coach, his last 3 seasons were a disgrace, coincidentally it was the season that Ambro became a regular in the team...

And I'll dig up the stats, but clearly he's made far less appearances then Rino while being at the club for much longer, surely he wasn't injured for 8 years straight

Yes well, I'm sure the 2 Sheva and Thomasson scored at the San Siro didn't contribute anything....

And come on if you really believe that Ambro would have made the slightest of differences in Istanbul, then you clearly don't remember the melt down of massive proportions that occured in that game. The entire team switched off Cafu, Stam, Nesta, Pirlo, Maldini, Gattuso, all switched off and sh!t happened. Ambro certainly didn't help in preventing PSV humiliating us in the semis, yes he scored the goal at the end of the match, but it was another game in which the entire team switched off, a common occurance under Carlo, Deportivo, PSV, Liverpool. All matches tha should have been easy and we managed to screw up

Who let Gerrard run free into the area for his header to make it 3-1?
Who fouled Gerrard for the equaliser? Whether it was a dive or not is irrelevent, Rino let Gerrard get in front of him, directly in on goal.

He wasn't the only player at fault, but he can be blamed for 2 goals for sure.

Silverware to back it up? It's fact, but I'll debate it.

9 years with Juve and Milan, 1 title. This is a disgrace, I could at least equal that.

He has 2 CL titles. But when you've completely given up and rest players in league games AND arguably have the best player in the World, it makes it much easier to do so. The 2003 CL win is credible. Athens, while a great win, has the gloss taken off it due to our shambles in the league.

The dive is relevant as the penalty shouldn't have been given in the first place and Gattuso wasn't the one that was marking him IIRC, still that header went in because of Dida's howler, same goes for Smicer's goal.
