I know where you are coming from.

But he had that sight on goal for his last couple of seasons, particularly the last season when he knew things weren't going well with him and Allegri. We surely could have (probably) groomed a younger player in his place.
Probably? I really don't think so. Allegri would have introduced someone younger if we had the talent. But the honest truth with Milan is that we don't have so many talents available. In fact, I can't remember which homegrown striker last was truly good. Paloschi comes close, but his long loan periods do not give me much confidence.
The thing is, I really don't believe veterans hold back things. Especially not Pippo, who wanted only joker status. If young players are really "that" good, they take their place. Like Kaka took Costa's. But other then that I don't fall into the category of people who once tried to convince me that Coco should take Maldini's place or that Seedorf is holding back the incredible talent of Gourcuff.

But compared to Seedorf, Gattuso and Pirlo, yeah Inzaghi did little wrong. Playing in the attack meant that he was nearly not exposed as much as these other guys who had midfield duties.

I still remember just how much of a disservice these three did to their names and legacy, but just being clumsy, slow, or stupid during play.
I think you're being unfair to Rino and Pirlo as well. Pirlo didn't hold us back as well, he just proved to be a unique character and someone who didn't appreciate where he was. Rino, apart from that appalling Jordan/Tottenham incident, didn't do much wrong as well.
But one last thing I want to highlight. You know the last Milan-moment which was truly filled with emotions? When Inzaghi scored. I cried a little.
And that says it all. I'd rather watch another 2 years the lazy fat-*** Seedorf, the Pippo-redux he was in the last months, the aging Zambrotta and Ambrosini the the Muntari's, Niang's, Birsa's, Constant's and Mesbah's we have right now. This was always my approach. Change faded stars? Surely; rejuvenation is necessary and crucial for a consistent stay on top. But changing faded players at all cost is utterly stupid.
And the biggest fault goes on Galliani and our management here. They had the chance to embrace the possibility of players like Nesta, Maldini, Inzaghi, Ambrosini or Seedorf staying and playing long with us here while breeding a whole new bunch of players who'll be ready to train, learn and watch the giants play. The torch would have been passes along smoothly. But no, we had to play with various Grimi's, Mationi's, Datti's and Onyewu's.
Sure, money was the big issue. After all, I haven't invented this; Milan did it a long time ago, when players like Baresi, Tassotti, Ancelotti or Albertini passed the torch along to younger legends in the making.

Yeah, well not outsiders like these.

I just want a proven name, someone that can be classified as a proper coach, a true man manager, team builder, someone that has an identity and give it to the club. Because, well, signing a nobody (even Van Basten) would just be akin to shooting another arrow in the dark.
And that is an experiment, a risk, we can't afford now. No sirree, it may do wonders for us, but there is less than a 10% change of that happening. The team environment, management, lack of seniors, abundance of punks, all these factors combined means it could well be another three four years going in circles.
The thing is, I honestly doubt we could find a proven name today who'd be willing to step in. If Milan had a plan, a project, a long term perspective - maybe. But with these baby steps,..no.

The best coach is the one that leaves a team in better condition than he acquired it.

FACT.
Agreed, at least mostly.
