Extract from a preview of today's U20 WC game between Spain and Italy. Young Michelangelo speaks:

QUOTE
The opening match of the Round of 16 at Egypt 2009 could hardly be more intriguing, pitting together old adversaries Spain and Italy. The European duo have the greatest respect for each other and with so little to choose between the sides, victory in Cairo will most likely hinge on the finest of details.

Incentives for Italy
For an indication of just how close Monday's meeting might prove you only have to go back four months to the final of the Mediterranean Games in Pescara, a match La Roja edged 2-1 with a goal in the fifth minute of injury time. "I remember the game well", Italy defender Michelangelo Albertazzi tells FIFA.com. "We came close to beating them but we ended up losing. Now we have a wonderful opportunity to get our revenge."

His coach Francesco Rocca knows only too well how difficult that task will be for his side. "We're coming up against one of the favourites for the title. They're the only team to have won all their matches in the group phase and they have one of the best records at youth level. It's going to be a very tough game."

Albertazzi, who plays his club football for AC Milan and is Italy's leading scorer in Egypt with two goals, also has the greatest respect for the Spaniards. "Technically they are a great side, and their biggest strength is the ability they have to retain possession," he says before issuing a warning to the men in red. "They have some good players in every area but we are convinced we can beat them and keep progressing at the tournament."

As far as the 18-year-old Bologna-born centre-half is concerned, the key to conquering Spain lies in the battle for midfield supremacy. "What we need to do to beat them is cut off their possession at source. If we can prevent their playmakers from settling into the game, then we'll have a better chance."

Though he nods in agreement like a doting father, coach Rocca chooses to focus attention on his own side. "We managed to qualify from a very tough section and that has given my players more confidence and has made them feel more sure about themselves. That kind of lift could be vital for the Spain game. The least little thing can make all the difference in these knockout matches."

HT Spain U20 0 - 0 Italy U20

Spain had a guy sent off in the 28th for what sounds like a really nasty challenge.

Spain have still had more possession but both teams have 5 shots on goal.

Given that Italy's got its coach in the stands (he was sent off in the last game), one striker out due to card accumulation, and both of the known creative midfielders out with minor injuries, I'd say they're doing reasonably well.
Tennie
FT Spain 1 - 3 Italy.

Big surprise to me, at least. Italy's 3 goals were all from open play; Spain's was a penalty (conceded by Albertazzi, unfortunately). Spain had another pen that Fiorillo saved. Fishdoll fins up to him!

Game got a bit on the rough side in the second half: 9 cards.

I can't believe they pulled off a win! I was so worried that they would lose I was almost afraid to look at for the score. I read that it was only 2-1 though

QUOTE
Italy took their place in the quarter-finals with a dramatic 3-1 win over ten-man Spain at Cairo's Al Salam Stadium. The excellent Andrea Mazzarani emerged as the hero, scoring one and setting up another, while Vincenzo Fiorillo saved a late penalty as Gli Azzurrini survived a spirited onslaught from their European rivals
Tennie
So the U20s play Hungary in the next round. Should be a bit of an advantage to Italy even if there are a couple of guys out on card suspensions. Hungary had to go to extra time & pens to beat the Czech Republic today.

is pedrucchini on the team? like i know fiorillo is the starter but is pedrucchini even on the map...
Tennie
He's not on this squad. Former youth player Bruscagin is, though. (Fishdoll regrets to report that he conceded the second pen to Spain, bit of a dodgy call but it was Bruscagin. Thankfully Fiorillo saved it).

Albertino was called up for the U21s btw.

And Darmian is doing PT/specialized training with Padova after breaking his foot. he should resume training with the team in another couple of weeks.
Tennie
So the Azzurrini went out to Hungary in the quarters. sad.gif The game went to extra time, when Hungary scored the winner. It was a pretty nasty affair from what I can tell -- Italy ended the game with 9 guys, Hungary with 10, and BOTH coaches were sent to the stands.
kurtsimonw
Do Hungary have a good team or is that a bit of a shock?

From what I heard Hungary haven't done too well either.
Tennie
I think the bigger shock is that Italy got out of the group stage. There was a lot of criticism in the Italian press that the U20s were a substandard team, with a lot of guys who COULD play for the U20s either bumped up early to the U21s or not released from their clubs. This is a relatively young U20 team (ie, we could in theory have seen Balotelli, Macheda, etc but didn't).

didn't michelangelo get sent off sad.gif ?
Tennie
Yeah, in the 117th minute right at the end of extra time. Even so, I still think he had a good tournament. (WERE YOU WATCHING LEONARDO? LET THE KID PLAY!)

Do any of you honestly 100% believe that Leonardo isn't just a puppet for the brass? (I think he should have just stayed behind the scenes and did what he did best...I'll admit I wanted him to be our coach at first...but I think they, Fester and Berlu, have completely screwed him over)
Tennie
They have, but he let them do it. He shouldn't have taken the job.
Jack Sparrow
And what's worrying is his comment that if he leaves the job he won't go back to his old post. That's terrifying, coz I love the man, and want him to stay here.
Bluesummers
From what I"ve seen of Albertazzi, he should be given the chance.

Right now Abate is RB until january.

We have Zamb/favali/janku for LB.

But they all have flopped in that position. We might as well play him against a small team to see if he can handle the pressure. I hope leo plays him after the madrid game.

We really will be screwed if he leaves Milan completely. Braida hasn't done very much in a long while sad.gif Man I'm not looking forward to the continuation of this season.

I hope Albertazzi plays...I really do. Plus, he can't be worse than the players we have.
dst
Albertazzi would look bad in a team playing so bad plus I think it's unfair to let him take (some of) the pressure this team has on its shoulders right now at this age. I would not let him play.

I think he was misquoted/you misunderstood him. he said once he leaves his coaching job he will never return to it in the future. but he didn't say anything about his old post (technical director was it?) at the club. I personally am sure if he fails. he will be back to his old post. after all he and Galliani are great friends wink.gif
Tennie
Nah, I think Jack's right. I remember reading that bit about not returning to a scouting position too.
Zed.D
In the one I read (on GOAL.com!), there wasn't any mention of his old post. (why would he say that anyway...? unsure.gif) I don't know.... it'll be a shame if this relationship comes to such an end.

And demote all the first team players to the Primavera...that'll teach them.
Tennie
Fishdoll +1 cookie in general to all the youth teams, who had a good weekend collectively. Of the various teams that played, only 1 lost (to an Atalanta youth team).

Also of note, young Daniel Maldini has scored twice for his squad so far. smile.gif
Tennie
So, Zigoni is slipping. He only scored one goal today in the Primavera's Cup game versus the baby Donkeys of Chievo.

FT Milan 6 - 1 Chievo

Other Milan goals by: Oduamani, Meregalli, and Schenetti

And young Primavera player Giacomo Berretta has been called up for Italy's U17 squad for the U17 world cup.

Where does he come off having the nerve to score less then 2 goals in a game ohmy.gif

Sell Zigoni. Demote KJH.

Well, Zigoni must have heard our threats. 96.gif

FT Milan Primavera 4 - 1 Cittadella Primavera

2 goals by Zigoni and 2 goals by Merkel

I'm thinking of starting a petition for him to be promoted.

I just love your euphemisms for the other Primavera teams. smile.gif

What about that team (Giovanissimi?) that hardly let in any goals last season? How are they doing nowadays?
Tennie
This year that squad is competing in the Giovanissimi Regionali division. They're in second place - 3 points behind the baby cugini and have, so far, conceded two goals (one of which was a 0-1 loss to said baby cugini). This is the squad that Christian Maldini plays for.

Daniel Maldini's squad is the Pulcini 2001 squad. They're undefeated so far this season, with 5 wins and 2 draws. Daniel has scored twice for them. It's still strange for me to see a Maldini listed as a midfielder in squad lists though.

I heard that little Albertazzi was one of the best defenders in the recent U20 tournament. Was it true?
Tennie
I thought he was very good in the little bits I was able to see. Was surprised to see him playing in the center and not as LB but he was quite solid.
Tennie
So, Berretta is wearing the #9 jersey and starting for the baby Azzurrini (U17) in their first round game v. Algeria. Fishdoll crosses fins!
dst
He looked rather good in the first half, didn't he? He is strong and explosive but it's still too early for him to get involved with the senior team.
Tennie
I'm not seeing pictures, unfortunately. Glad to hear he looks promising!
Tennie
And on another topic, Daniel Maldini's (the younger of the brothers) team played two games yesterday. They won by a combined score of 24-0. smile.gif
dst
Our lad was substituted in the 75th minute. Not a bad game overall, his power and positioning seemed to me to be his best qualities.

edit: Fiorentina's Carraro opens the scoring with an AMAZING finish!

edit: it ended 1-0 for Italy.

I thought we was a LB who could play in centre like Criscito, Chiellini, Maldini etc

Berretta and the u17s play South Korea today.
dst
All games are streamed for free on FIFA's website for anyone that cares.
Tennie
Albertazzi and Zigoni have been called up for the U19s.
dst
Zigoni? The guy that can't score in every game? Pffft
Tennie
C'mon, dst, give him a break. He can't score TWO every game, granted, but still.
dst
Alright, I'll give him some time, maybe he's better than he seems to be.

On the Italy vs Korea Rep. game, the Azzurrini have come from a goal down in the first half to make it 2-1 with two early goals. The first one by Camporese and the second one by Iemmello, both Viola kids. Italy have taken control of the game now, they look much better than they did in the first half.

So all three Italian goals in the competition have come from Fiorentina youngsters.
