Shame for Roni, it's obivously horrible for him on a personal level.

Annoying for Milan as we've had a striker on our books who we expected a fair bit from, and he's done nothing due to constantly being injured.

Medics: Ronnie will return

The future may look bleak for Ronaldo, but there is optimism amongst medical experts and Milan President Silvio Berlusconi is confident of a return.

The former Real Madrid hitman flew to Paris at 9am this morning to receive surgery on a severed tendon in his knee amongst fears that his career is over.

Accompanied by compatriot and Milan official Leonardo, club medic Massimiliano Sala and fiancée Maria Beatriz, Ronnie was applauded by a group of fans as he left hospital.

“Ronaldo himself asked to be operated on by the same team in Paris who reconstructed his right knee eight years ago,” club doctor Pierre Meeserman explained.

“The procedure was excellent eight years ago and surgical technology has only improved.”

“If things go according to plan he can return to being a great player, but it is hard to put a time scale on that,” respected sports doctor Walter Pascale commented.

While the nation’s Press have prepared obituaries to Ronaldo’s career, Pietro Volpi – Inter doctor between 1995 and 2000 – thinks it is premature to bid farewell to Il Fenomeno.

“It is a very serious injury, but it can be repaired and technology has made huge steps in recent times,” he told Sky Tg24.

“A recovery will probably take between eight and 10 months, but I wouldn’t be so pessimistic about Ronaldo’s future.

“The real problem is that he is eight years older than he was in 2000 and that makes it harder to get to peak condition in sport.”

Rossoneri President Silvio Berlusconi, a committed admirer of the three-time FIFA World Player of the Year – is determined that Ronnie can quickly make a full recovery.

“I spoke to him on the telephone last night and I told him to believe in himself as he has such a great physical capability,” he said on Unomattina.

“At 31-years-old he is still young and I think that he can return in a number of months to being the champion of old. Everyone in the sporting community hopes that is the case.”

ONLY RONIE

2/14/2008 1:13:00 PM

The draw against Livorno, the standings, the next league games...wait a minute. Everything can and must wait. Today, in the head and hearts of all Milan fans, this is ONLY Ronie's day.

MILAN - It cannot end like this. Legend don't end. Let's hope that last night a light has not been switched off. These are just some of the phrases re-grouped in the thousands of letters, mails and messages which are reaching the headquarters of Milan in via Turati, the Rossoneri's pres office and the editorial staff of Milan Channel and the Official Website.

Amongst the numerous, warm, big demonstrations of affection from the 'Milanisti', there are those who were not able to sleep last night, those who wish that Ronie slept. There's also a blog, 'fenomenononmollare' (Fenomeno don't give up), which proves the impact that the small crater which opened in Ronaldo's knee in the penalty area of Livorno and his tears had on football lovers.

Ronie, Ronie and again Ronie. Milan, who will remain very close to the Brazilian start as a club, and the official Rossoneri communication media will give space and voice to all fans who want to give their encouragement to Ronaldo. A Phenomenon. And the phenomenons never give up. This is what the fans and lovers of Milan told us. The word also of the fan who wrote to us, telling us he would have preferred if he had hurt himself...

LET'S VOICE OUR SUPPORT. NOW'S THE TIME!!

Galliani stands by Ronnie

Ronaldo has undergone surgery on his damaged knee in Paris and Milan Vice-President Adriano Galliani has pledged to support the injured star.

El Fenomeno suffered a sickening injury at San Siro last night when he landed awkwardly and severed a tendon in his knee.

While there are fears that the 31-year-old’s career is over, he has been operated on by the same doctor that repaired his other knee in 2000 and there is hope he could return to action within a year.

“I spoke to Ronaldo just before he left for Paris and gave him all our best wishes and reminded him that Milan will be right behind him,” Galliani revealed.

“I think that cheered him up as he seemed a lot less down today.”

Ronaldo’s contract expires in the summer, but the Selecao star had hoped to earn a new one this term. That won’t happen now, but it seems unlikely that the Diavolo will abandon him.

“When you are talking about medical issues I can’t give any predictions and I don’t know how long a recovery will take, but we will be there for him,” Galliani insisted.

“There is great affection from President Silvio Berlusconi and myself towards Ronnie. It was a tragic thing to happen, but now we need to deal with it in the best way possible.

We don’t want such a sad image to be the last we see of Ronaldo on a football pitch. The hope is that he will wear the Milan shirt again as he is perhaps the best player Brazil has produced after Pelè.”

I'm 99% sure, Milan will stand by him. Milan's standing by players often has worked out to be good for the club. Remember Pippo.

I really want Ronnie to back playing for Milan. At least 2 complete seasons. The CL is the only thing he's got left to win. And the champion has more than earned his right to the big ears.

Ronaldo op goes smoothly

The knee operation undertaken on AC Milan and Brazil striker Ronaldo went well on Thursday, according to his medical specialist in Paris.

The three-time FIFA World Player of the Year, who ruptured a ligament in his left knee on Wednesday, was treated at the Pitie-Salpetriere hospital in the French capital. Knee specialist Gerard Saillant, who oversaw the operation and performed surgery on Ronaldo's right knee eight years ago, told La Gazzetta dello Sport: "The operation lasted around two hours and took place without any particular problems.

"It was the same injury as the previous time and for this reason the operation was of the same type," the surgeon added. "Now Ronaldo will have to go through nine months of rehabilitation."

Asked if the Brazilian would play again, Saillant replied: "It will depend on him."

The 31-year-old was carried off in tears after going down heavily during Wednesday's 1-1 Serie A draw at home to Livorno. Ronaldo, who has hardly featured this season because of a series of injuries, had only come on as a substitute three minutes earlier.

The Brazilian sustained two serious injuries to his right knee while playing for Inter Milan in 1999 and 2000 but recovered to help Brazil win the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea/Japan. He then went on to play for Real Madrid before joining AC Milan in January 2007.

Very sad

"We're all very sad and worried about Ronaldo," said Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti. "I don't want to say his career is over because only time can put the word end to his career. His team mates left the stadium quickly to reach the hospital to check on his condition. Being close to him can help him cope at such a delicate moment of his career."

Milan president Silvio Berlusconi said he believed Ronaldo would be able to resume his career. "He still has an extraordinary physique. I'm confident in some months time he can return to be the player we all know," the president said.

Ronaldo is the all-time leading scorer in FIFA World Cup finals with 15 goals in three tournaments.

Seedorf admits Ronnie doubts
Friday 15 February, 2008

Clarence Seedorf has shattered the air of optimism surrounding Ronaldo’s recovery by admitting that he fears for his Milan teammate’s career.

Seedorf accompanied El Fenomeno to hospital after he severed a tendon in his knee while playing Livorno on Wednesday evening.

The Dutch midfielder is a close friend of Ronaldo’s, but he believes that the regularity of the 31-year-old’s injury problems could be an issue.

“It’s the third time that it has happened to him,” he told BBC Radio Five Live. “That’s why I’m thinking that it might be the end.

“I hope that he makes the right decision at the right time. We’ll see what happens over the next six months, but for now he needs to focus on rehabilitation.”

Seedorf was obviously moved by the events at San Siro and sounded pained as he recalled Ronaldo’s fall.

“Nobody wants to watch moments like that,” he said. “My heart stopped beating because it was like watching a repeat of the injury he suffered while playing for Inter against Lazio – his reaction was the same.

“He’s one of the greatest players to play the game and hopefully this is not the way it’s going to end.”

The initial reports are positive after Ronaldo underwent surgery in Paris yesterday and he is expected to begin his long course of rehabilitation sometime next week.

Ronaldo surgeon's warning
Saturday 16 February, 2008

The surgeon who operated on Ronaldo warns only the most motivated player can come back from this latest injury.

Although the Brazilian snapped the tendon in his right knee in 2000 and took almost two years to recover, he is now 31 and suffered an identical injury to the left knee.

“It will need a lot of energy to play football again,” surgeon Eric Rolland told Le Parisien newspaper.

“The rehabilitation process is much longer than usual because this is a tendon, not a ligament. We first of all need to give solidity to the area again.

“We know straight away, though, that Ronaldo cannot run before six months and cannot be in a reasonable condition to train earlier than nine months.”

Il Fenomeno’s knee buckled during Wednesday night’s 1-1 draw with Livorno and he flew to Paris for the operation on Friday. The Milan striker will remain in the clinic for at least a week.

“We must see how quickly the player recovers from the shock of the surgery. This week will allow us to have more precise ideas of how he has experienced this latest injury,” continued Rolland.

“Then we can only set milestones at 45 days, three months, six months. If at each of these steps it all doesn’t seem too much for Ronaldo and he can see an objective taking shape, then anything is possible.”

Meanwhile, there is controversy in Brazil over the cause of Ronaldo’s many knee injuries during his career.

The anti-doping co-ordinator of the Brazilian Federation has accused PSV Eindhoven of creating a monster.

“It is all the fault of PSV. In Holland they gave him vitamin integrators when he was very young and among these substances were anabolic steroids that could have boosted his growth more than was healthy,” said Bernardino Santi in newspaper Folha.

“His muscles grew excessively and this accumulation of mass in a short period of time, when he had not yet completed his natural development, made his muscles incompatible with the structure of his bones.

“The effects of steroid use can only become apparent 10, 15 or even 20 years later.”

Ronaldo played for PSV Eindhoven from 1994 to ’96, but the Brazilian Federation immediately distanced itself from Santi’s allegations and fired him.

Ron 'offered contract renewal' Saturday 16 February, 2008

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ronaldo’s agent has thanked Milan for offering a contract renewal days after a career-threatening injury.

Even the surgeons who operated on the snapped tendon in his left knee cannot say if the striker will ever play again, but his representative is hopeful.

“Ronaldo is a warrior who has fought and won so many battles in his lifetime,” said Fabiano Farah.

“He is the type of person who goes all the way in his challenges and I think he is ready for this latest fight.”

There had been talk of Ronnie’s contract before the horrific injury in the 1-1 draw with Livorno on Wednesday.

One would’ve thought the setback – which at the very least will keep the 31-year-old out for nine months – would preclude any paperwork, but the agent revealed that is not the case.

“Every indication suggests the Rossoneri are interested in renewing his contract and Vice-President Adriano Galliani has already expressed this intention.

“Ronaldo wants to get back to playing football, but his primary objective right now is to be healthy and go through a successful rehabilitation process.”

A contract renewal could be an important motivating factor, as even surgeon Eric Rolland warned today that the psychological aspect is crucial in coming back from such a serious injury.

Dad delivers upbeat report on AC Milan's Ronaldo

Ronaldo's Dad has revealed both the presidents of AC Milan and Inter have been in contact since his son's horror knee injury.

Nelio Nazario De Lima said: "I've certainly had a call from Silvio Berlusconi (Milan), even also from Massimo Moratti (Inter). It's a good thing that two such clubs make the effort.

"Especially Moratti, for all his rivalry with Milan, he still found it in him to ask about Ronaldo. I must thank Moratti for such a lovely gesture."

Nelio also delivered a very upbeat report on Ronaldo after his knee surgery in Paris last week.

"The situation is better than I thought. Today my son is really good, he has removed the bandages and takes no more morphine. And he's happy. He is really good."

PSG PLAYERS SET TO VISIT RONALDO

Ronaldo will receive a special visit this Wednesday, when the Paris Saint-Germain squad make the trip to the Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital in the French capital, where Il Fenomeno has been recovering from knee surgery since last Thursday.

Among the players planning to visit the striker are three of his compatriots: former São Paulo playmaker Souza, Everton Santos, formerly of Corinthians, and ex-Internacional wing-back Ceará, along with the club's Portuguese captain Pauleta.

Ronaldo is scheduled to leave hospital on Friday, although he will spend another week in Paris as he continues his recuperation.

In all, the player will spend a month undergoing treatment in Europe, a decision that was taken following a meeting between AC Milan's doctors and the medical team of Gérard Saillant, who carried out last week's operation on the footballer.

-------------------------------------------------

LUIS FABIANO DISMAYED AT RONALDO INJURY

Luis Fabiano is the latest of Ronaldo’s selecao teammates to express his solidarity with Il Fenomeno, following his knee tendon injury last week in AC Milan’s match against Livorno.

"I was very upset by Ronaldo’s injury,” Fabiano told Fobazo. “He is one of the best Brazilian footballers of all time and it is very sad that he has to go through all this again.”

The player known as ‘the Fabulous’, who currently leads the scoring charts in the Spanish league, said that he would be rooting for Ronaldo’s swift return to the top.

"I hope that he makes a rapid recovery and gets back to playing the way he was before,” he added.

-------------------------------------------------

REAL MADRID STAR GIVES BACKING TO RONALDO

When Robinho arrived at Real Madrid in 2005, he used to referred to his new teammate, Ronaldo as the President – a sign of his longstanding respect for his fellow forward.

Robinho, who lists Ronaldo as his main role model, says he has always been able to rely on his fellow forward for support in the past. And he says it is now time for him to reciprocate.

"I speak from my heart when I say that I wish Ronaldo all the best. He has always been a great friend,” Robinho told Fobazo. “He has always been a big source of strength for me, so now it is time for me to do the same for him.”

And Robinho is confident that it is only a matter of time before Ronaldo is back performing at the highest level.

"I don’t have the slightest doubt that he’s going to come through this. Ronaldo is a big character, with great force of will, and he will give everything to get what he wants. He will soon be back to being the great player he always was,” he added.

-------------------------------------------------

MARTA: FOOTBALL LOVERS EVERYWHERE ARE BACKING RONALDO

When she witnessed the moment Ronaldo suffered his injury on Wednesday night, Marta admits to being overcome by sadness.

"I felt really, really upset when I saw what happened. He had just come back from a minor problem and seemed happy,” the Umea midfielder told Fobazo.

The FIFA Women’s Player of the Year, who is heading to Russia on Saturday for the Laureus Awards ceremony, was keen to remind Ronaldo that there are no shortage of people around the world wishing him well.

“We’re all rooting for him – anyone who loves football,” she said.

(I'm translating an Italian article which is quoting a Brazilian article here. So apologies in advance if I screw it up).

Ronaldo has apparently said in a phone interview that he wants to return earlier than the 9 months currently predicted.

He's getting a lot of visitors and phone calls. Kaka (a 'good friend') has called regularly. Ronie's set to leave the hospital on Friday. To pass the time until then, he's watched TV - including a documentary on Iraq and one about koala bears. However, much to his annoyance, he couldn't watch Brazilian tv so he missed the weekly episode of 'Sete Pecados' (which, from the context, is a soap opera of sorts. I think). However, due to a computer in his hospital room, he was able to cast a vote for the elimination of one of the competitors of the Brazilian version of Big Brother.

Sounds like he's in good spirits. 96.gif
