Gila unconcerned by criticism

Alberto Gilardino insists the criticism labelled at him this season is a positive. “It means that I am an important player,” said the Milan man.

The striker has struggled for consistency at times this term and although he’s netted 12 goals in Serie A, cheers have been mixed with jeers.

“If a player is criticised then it means that he is important for the team,” said Gilardino after his brace in the 5-2 win over Ascoli on Wednesday.

“That happens when a footballer is always called to prove something, because everybody expects a lot from him.”

With Milan now looking good to finish in the top four, the World Cup winner is eagerly anticipating next week’s Champions League trip to Old Trafford.

“I believe the Manchester United tie has arrived at an important time of the season for us,” explained the former Parma starlet.

“The two-legged game could tell us a lot about the team and our environment. We are eager to do well and we want to give our all to reach the Final.”

Milan are currently fourth in the table with a four-point lead over Palermo and will host Cagliari at the San Siro this weekend.

Gilardino On Lyon's Shortlist - Report 

'France Football' has revealed that the French champions want to lure the Milan striker away from Italy.

Alberto Gilardino could be on his way out of Milan according to 'France Football' as the important French magazine stated that the player could join Olympique Lyon this summer.

"Gilardino is on his way out even though his contract expires in 2010. The player will surely be less expensive than his price of arrival (24 million Euros)," revealed the popular magazine.

Lyon have 200 million Euros in balance and President Aulas wants to invest most of it in the transfer market to strengthen his side further, to be able to compete for Champions League next year.

The only problem could be Gilardino's wage demands considering that the Italian striker gains 250k Euros per month. If this transfer does not go through, Lyon's secondary objectives are Trezeguet, Tevez, Saha and Makaay.

As he waits to see whether or not he will start ahead of Filippo Inzaghi in the UEFA Champions League final against Liverpool FC, Alberto Gilardino has revealed that the "healthy competition" that exists between himself and his AC Milan team-mate is one of the secrets of his side's success this season.

Difficult season
Gilardino was not a Milan player when the Rossoneri suffered their penalty shoot-out defeat against Liverpool in the 2005 final - although he was already saying his final farewells to former club Parma FC, with his €24m transfer to San Siro just a month away. However, after enduring a trying second term that began with a Serie A points deduction, Gilardino's determination to win his first European Champions Clubs' Cup is just as great as that of his team-mates who were directly involved in Istanbul.

'Decisive factor'
To claim European honours, though, the 24-year-old will want to improve on a modest UEFA Champions League goal return. "I've made a lot of Champions League appearances and it's true I haven't scored as many goals as I'd have liked," he told uefa.com. "However, I've played an important role in the side in other ways and believe I will be a decisive factor in the final." Gilardino's two UEFA Champions League goals to date are dwarfed by Inzaghi's return of 36 from 65 appearances.

Advantage Inzaghi
Indeed, if the words of Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti ahead of the semi-final against Manchester United FC are anything to go by it is the veteran marksman who is the most likely to be given the nod in Athens. "There's more pressure in the Champions League and Gilardino doesn't have the experience yet to control that pressure," the Milan coach said. For his part, Inzaghi is certainly ready. "Off course I'd like to play from the start because I feel in great shape," he told uefa.com. "However, it's Ancelotti who decides the starting line-up and lifting the trophy is the only thing that counts."

Istanbul pain
Like Gilardino, Inzaghi was not on the pitch in Istanbul in 2005 but he is nonetheless eager to cancel the memories of that night. "I wasn't fit for that match and I had to watch the final from the stands," he continued. "It was painful because we had already won that cup but they took it out of our grasp. Liverpool are good but it won't happen again." If Gilardino is on the bench in Athens he will be hoping to have a similar impact as substitute as when he scored in the 3-0 semi-final second-leg win against Manchester United.

'La staffetta'
Ancelotti intends to adopt 'la staffetta' - an Italian phrase referring to passing the baton, or giving the players a half each - and Gilardino is ready for the relay. "The coach has said we'll adopt 'la staffetta' and that's fine, there is healthy competition between myself and Pippo [Inzaghi]. At a club like Milan there is always competition for places and we're ready to help out however we can. This has been our strength this year and hopefully it will be in Athens."

Best option would be to start Pippo, then replace him with Gila at some point in th second half

Juventus After Gilardino - Report

Tuttosport has sparked rumours of Juventus tracking Milan forward Alberto Gilardino.



With David Trezeguet supposedly on the verge of quitting Juve, the club’s management is now seeking for an adequate replacement for the French forward.

Juventus were initially interested in signing Ajax hitman Klaas Jan Huntelaar. However, the latter has recently denied rumours of a move and revealed his desire to stay with Ajax for another year.

Since, the new name that has appeared on Juventus’ shopping list is that of Alberto Gilardino.

The AC Milan forward has warned the Rossoneri management that he wants to be guaranteed of a regular starting spot. In case Milan fail to confirm that, a move to Juve would appeal to the striker, claims the report.

However, Juventus are wary of over-spending on strikers.

The Turin based club would have to spend around 20 million euros in order to net Gilardino, whereas they have 8 million euros ready to net Iaquinta.

The priority is to invest money in defenders and quality midfielders first.

Gilardino chiama la Juve

Se al Milan dovesse arrivare un'altra punta di livello internazionale, Alberto Gilardino potrebbe chiedere di essere ceduto. In cima ai suoi pensieri c'è la Juventus. Oggi il procuratore Bonetto incontra Galliani.

L'attaccante biellese, che due estati fa fu prelevato dal Parma per divenire il centravanti del Milan del futuro, ha trascorso due stagioni di alti e bassi in maglia rossonera. Il suo valore tecnico non è mai stato in discussione a Milanello, ma Alberto ha mostrato di soffrire più di altri suoi compagni le pressioni, come ha esplicitamente affermato anche Ancelotti; il suo score in Champions League, dove l'atmosfera è decisamente più carica di tensioni rispetto al campionato, è stato deludente (un solo gol in due anni prima della rete del 3-0 al Manchester United), ed anche la gestione dei momenti difficili è apparsa troppo spesso difficoltosa.

E' la classica storia del cane che si morde la coda, perchè se Gilardino soffre quella che sente come una sotanziale mancanza di fiducia, dall'altra parte il Milan è dovuto ricorrere lo scorso gennaio all'acquisto di Ronaldo proprio per surrogare la scarsa produttività dei suoi attaccanti, ed ora la situazione potrebbe riproporsi visto che Galliani e Braida hanno promesso un colpo di mercato proprio in attacco.

Gilardino sa che in un club come il Milan la concorrenza è normale e la maglia da titolare non può essere garantita, ma a 25 anni non vuole rischiare di recitare un ruolo da comprimario. E' evidente che Ronaldo parte in pole position, così come è evidente che se arrivasse uno fra Ronaldinho, Eto'o o Shevchenko giocherebbe quasi certamente titolare, senza contare che anche Kakà ha preso dimestichezza col ruolo di attaccante. Il rischio è quello di fare la ruota di scorta insieme ad Inzaghi.

Ecco perchè, nonostante Galliani gli abbia ribadito la fiducia della società e la volontà di trattenerlo a Milano, Gilardino è pronto a chiedere la cessione nel momento in cui il Milan dovesse piazzare un colpo grosso sul mercato estivo. In giornata è previsto un incontro fra Galliani ed il procuratore Bonetto, che ribadirà al club di via Turati i timori del giocatore.

L'unioca offerta per Gilardino è della Fiorentina, ma l'attaccante lascerebbe il Milan solo per la Juventus, con cui c'erano già stati contatti nel 2005. A Torino Gilardino è convinto di poter ritrovare gli stimoli e la fiducia che stanno venendo a mancare a Milano, specie se dovesse concretizzarsi il ritorno di Lippi sulla panchina bianconera. Lippi, Iaquinta, Gilardino, aria di Mondiale.

A quel punto, per accettare, il Milan tornerebbe evidentemente alla carica perchè nell'operazione sia inserito Gigi Buffon.

Basically Gila is worried that he won't be a strater next season, especially when we have Ronaldo and another world class striker might come. So it's possible he could leave. Fiorentina wants him but if he leaves it will be to Juve where he think he could be a lethal striker again.
