When Sheva left everyone expected from Gila to take over and lead us to victory.

Not true IMO. it was Kaka who became our key player after Sheva left.

Yeah, but that wasn't the plan. Kaka was to replace Rui, and Gila to take on Sheva's scoring duties, till they could bring in a Sheva replacement.

Both arguments have their strengths, but in my opinion not many people looked up as Gila to be our savior, or the best player in the team (as Sheva was). wink.gif How can a 20 something lead an attack of a club like Milan? We should have brought in another established striker like in the mold of Drogba, RVN, etc to partner him upfront.

Sheva was 30 something, while Gila just turned 20 a couple of years back, and to have expected him to be our attack leader was too much to as of the lad, irrespective of what he's done at his previous club. Kaka was a natural successor to Sheva. tongue.gif Replacement for Rui Costa and all. He just had to become the face of the club after Sheva. Gila was just another striker. We expected too much of him. And it didn't help things he couldn't deliver even half of it.

Difference between goal-scorer and attack leader. cool.gif Our new goal-scorer is Pato, while in no way is he our attack leader, someone who takes things by the neck when the going gets tough. Sheva was both. So was Ronaldo, pity it had to end the way it did for them both.

Yes it's different, that's not what I'm saying... Gila was the man that was supposed take over the goal-scoring duties when Sheva left... the thing is, our midfield was all crap and they could not create a single chance for him plus our defense was in bad shape and we were always under pressure... but it was Gila who always got the blame, even when he was not playing...

He was a "supposed" replacement. We all knew he could never dream to match Sheva's ability.

Gila was made a scapegoat for our failures in the last two seasons. Some of the criticism was deserved but quite a bit wasnt, for example Inzaghi and Olivera had appalling goal droughts but no one ever said anything of Inzaghi (Olivera was rightly crucified by many people here, me especially)

Tennie is right to an extent, i feel that Gila couldnt handle the pressure, but some blame must be attributed to Ancelotti, after Sheva left he made no attempt to modify his tactics slightly to accomodate Gila. Gila was expected to do everything himself like Sheva which he was not capable of, he mostly had to feed of scraps till Ronaldo came, when he did his scoring ratio improved significantly. Gila needed plenty of support from a Trequartista and SS, but that rarely happened, mostly he recieved poor service from the Xmas tree formation

There was no doubting that he missed alot of chances, and since his job is to score, he did a bad job. But I would find it very, very difficult to find somebody who did a good job last season. You could argue a case for Ambro, but he was the best of a very poor group of players.

Last season we were very poor, I agree. but Gila had already one bad season before that and you can hardly say a very poor team wins the CL. we were poor in the league, but not in Europe (we weren't GREAT before the semis either), where he managed to score 1 or 2 goals IIRC.

I wish him the best of luck, though, he knew he wasn't cutting it and sat quietly on the bench. Unlike some of his other teammates.

Then again, the only Italian forward worth his salt, for me, has been Baggio, the ponytail 10.

In fact, I don't think it'd come to this, if it ever were the case. Milan fans express a 'sour pill to swallow' after seeing Gila getting into form

Both regretful and angry are the Milan fan's reaction to Gilardino's return to form after wearing the Viola shirt. Corriere Fiorentino began to get the opinions of the curva faithfuls.

Diego Abatantono (spell): "I have to admit it was .. expected! It makes me feel happy that he is doing good work, for two reasons; firstly because I am one of his admirers and because I like Fiorentina. When the club decided to sell Gilardino, okay, even when that wasn't right because they should have brought Frey in exchange as well. Nevertheless, Milan have strengthened, an already strong team which brought us the Champions League. In return ?! Only money for the appreciation of the books, then after we got Shevchenko, and in all honestly I don't care about him!"

Oju Conti (spell): "I do have to say that the circumstances mad me angry. But also happy for him, because he deserves this. In Florence he seems more at ease and safe like that. In Milan he didn't seem that way and we watched him from the stands, we watched him under pressure on the pitch."

Tio Tiocoli (spell): "I had said in a previous interview that Gila will return to his Parma days. So for me, this isn't a surprise. In Milan he seemed lost, and didn't succeed in expressing himself. This matter makes me feel sad for Milan because he could have really helped Milan a lot. The problem in Milan wasn't because of Gilardino, but in Milan itself. They had bought a lot of forwards, really good forwards, but the team is not balanced."

Emillio Fede (spell): "The season had just started, and the adrenalin will help Gila fly with wings of confidence. Fiorentina seems very lively and dynamic.. The problem with Milan is that it has a lot of stars in the same position. Gilardino is amazing ?! Please calm down, one good start doesn't mean that. I would recommend for you all to wait, he is a good lad but that doesn't mean that he is irreplaceable. Especially in Milan. His move was a mistake for Berlusconi ?! Of course not, he never makes mistakes!"

Im sure there was a Gila thread in the "past players" area of the players section. Still interesting to see what they had to say, not sure about how representative of the whole curva it is
gal_kenny
That's sad to hear...But he wasn't meant for milan..It isn't ideal for us to reopen another thread for Gilardino..He's gone and won't come back...He ain't no sheva....He wasn't really good in milan...we gave him more than enough time for him to gel with this team but it didn't happen..

Um, we did cost him his NT spot, more so in the recent Euros, which I think he's about to snatch back. cool.gif I still think it wasn't the club per se, it was more about Carlo and his playing style that pulled the trigger. But good to see him back. He keeps his words to himself and never complains, gotta give Gilardino that.

Some People Don't Like That I'm Doing Well - Gila

Fiorentina striker Alberto Gilardino talked about the victory against Genoa tonight (1-0), in which he scored the winner, and the controversy surrounding the words of his former team mate Gennaro Gattuso.

At the end of the victory against Genoa, in which he scored the winning goal, Fiorentina striker Alberto Gilardino talked about the team's performance and his own brilliant period of form.

"It's a very important victory, especially after the defeat on Wednesday against Lazio," he said. "We have been attacked by everyone but the group always remained united, we are all fighting for the same objective, which is the good of Fiorentina. They are three important points."

On his goal, the fifth of the season for Gila, the striker said: "I did well to turn around in the area and aim for the far post. It went well, these three points matter."

Asked to react to the words of his former Milan team mate Gennaro Gattuso, who allegedly said Marco Borriello has the character needed to wear the Milan shirt, implying Gilardino doesn't, he said: "No, Gattuso called me today and we talked.

"The group of players Milan have is exceptional, it seemed strange that he would have said something like that, in fact he called me and we cleared it up. I think there are some journalists in Milan who are irritated that I'm doing well."

Asked whether he would support Milan in tomorrow's derby, Gilardino said: "I will certainly watch it, it's normal. It's a great match, I have played it too so I will watch it."

Finally, on coach Cesare Prandelli's reaction to the 3-0 defeat to Lazio, he concluded: "Sometimes it helps when the coach makes himself heard. I don't think anything strange has come out on that. We cleared things up in the dressing room, we talked, now we must prepare for the Champions League match on Tuesday."

Fiorentina face Steaua Bucharest on Tuesday night for the second matchday in Group F.

Even if Gila scores 20+ goals it doesn't mean that Rino was wrong. What Rino said was Gila wasn't mentally strong enough to succeed at Milan. A player receives a lot more pressure in Milan than in a club like Fiorentina.

That's the right way to put it, as you did. Not saying he lacks personality which Borriello has. wink.gif Gila did score 17 in his first season here. I agree. Though he said something to this effect: “The shirt of Milan weighs heavily, and with all due respect, it weighs much more than that of Fiorentina. To play for Milan you must have great personality.” ohmy.gif Maybe he meant it in a good way, probably the journalists cranked it up, but all said and done, it's not something I'd like to read again in my life.

what about all the other players that havent been performing for milan rolleyes.gif when you look at things closely gila scored 17 goals in his first season and he had competion, he performed that season. then he had two bad ones. guess i can name several other players in a similar position. and gattuso really shouldnt be talking beucase he hasnt delivered since the world cup.

gila scored 17 goals when we had serginho and cafu on the wings. two LEGIT wingers that can deliver crosses. it's no secret gilas strong point is his aerial abilities, most of his goals are a result of this. i remember that year serginho was top in serie a for completed crosses, and guess what gila scored. when you change the system ( a christams tree, where he gets the ball mostly to his feet. and impotent fullbacks) , or play players out of position, what esle can you expect? (taking away gila's crosses would be equivalent to playing kaka in the Dm role, or flamini as an attacking mid. what esle would you expect of them then?)

so it's easy to put all the blame on him, but guess what the same thing would happen to kaka or pato if we did the same thing them.
