Eurosport Italia did an analysis of who did and didn't play well yesterday. Here's what they said about Milan:

QUOTE
MILAN

- Chi sale -

[Milan
Going up
Pato - Fast, zippy, and stopped only by systematic fouls. Growing from his earlier preseason performances. Comes back to midfield to get the ball frequently, but he can't do it all on his own. A sermon alone in the desert up front for the rossoneri.

Nesta - Continues to make giant steps toward his best form. Some of his slide tackles remind one of the Nesta of times gone by. Encouraging signs.

Abate - Runs like a madman, once, twice, ten times. Leonardo fields him as a central midfielder, though he loves to burn the grown on the flanks; he'll adapt. One of the few to put in crosses, but his batteries aren't infinite.

Going down
Ronaldinho - Are we sure this is the same player so admired at Barcellona? He should carry along Milan, but he's carried along by the pitch. Never in the game, makes a lot of mistakes, not even able to make an impact with dead balls. Definitely the worst among the Rossoneri.

Roma - Disappointing debut with Milan. If the Rossoneri continue to disappoint it's surely not all his fault but Amauri nailed him with his shot. Perhaps he needs to remove a little rust.

Antonini - Fielded as a left back, completely out of position. Few crosses and when he does, he's way off the mark. This is why Leonardo is asking for a terzino (wingback).]
dst
Antonini is just terrible, he's not even good enough for the bench.

I haven't been able to watch our pre-season games that much... glad to read that Pato is improving compared to when he first played this pre-season (not surprised though).

As for Ronaldinho, I wish Silvio could open his eyes and see the mess he's created! the moment we signed Dinho something told me this could be the beginning of the end of Kaka's adventure with us. it was a badly planned move. sign a washed-up Dinho on the cheap, sell Kaka for a whopping sum, and try to make Dinho the new Kaka. meanwhile pocket a lot of $$$ and watch his favorite footballer on earth solely shine on the pitch and not overshadowed by Kaka. well, this plan is doomed to failure and I'm sooo glad about that.

Yep, everything is halted right now

This is what happens when you play in Pescara, no offence...

this is extremely out of taste! I have lost alot of relatives in the earthquakes that happened there and would appreciate a little f****** humility!!! it's not a Pescara thing, its a clusterf*** of earthquakes ravaging Abruzzo thing!!

QUOTE (Tennie @ Aug 14 2009, 04:25 PM) *
Largest town in the Abruzzo region that's not mostly piles of rubble right now. They moved the tournament down there after the earthquake (part of the proceeds going to the region, lots of free tickets for the kids, etc).

i know oddo donated to charity as he was raised in pescara and spent a little while in Manopello (my village)
Tennie
The club (this is from memory so may not be exactly right) is donating to rebuilding sports facilities, as is the Lega Calcio. The players have put money together for 10 or so wooden dwellings. So the folks at Milan have all done stuff for the region.
il_diavolo_mtl
oh i'm sure they did, but there is this little rumor (it may have been done already) that massimo will cut people's hair for charity. (him being a trained barber)

why are you glad about that ?

cause thats the only way these jokes who run our club will be forced out. since 2006 this club has been in a poor state. How long will we have to wait until this mess is cleaned. Only at milan can something like this exist.

We sell sheva, replace him with some expensive brazillian flop.

We spend all our transfer money on signing oldies who have huge wage bills, which in the end cause us more harm and hinders the club. They were supposed to be short term solutions, but that didn't even work out.

Spend money on stupid new contracts for players who clearly don't deserve to be getting paid the amount they are. kaladze/seedorf/ambro the list goes on.

Sell our players in co ownership deals for a small fee, than pay 2x or 3x as much to re-buy him. We lose at least 10m a year on this alone.

Sell our star player in order to "balance the books" which have been unbalanced by the points above.

Sack a world class coach and then replace him with our club scout. Instead of going for the correct and available option in Rijkaard or Van Basten who both have experience in coaching, we sign someone who doesn't even want to coach.

and so forth...

The list just goes on and on.

Leonardo's prematch press conference:

QUOTE
ON THE BERLUSCONI TROPHY - 'We are going to San Siro with most of the group for the first time in this pre-season. We'll finally have a high percentage of the team available. We are playing against a direct opponent, it's a match with great tradition, certainly an appointment we have to face with the right concentration and mentality.'

ON THE OPPORTUNITY OF BUYING MORE PLAYERS - 'The basis of the team has been there for a while, and it's a basis of extraordinary champions, who have won everything. The market will not determine what Milan will be like the coming season: if from now until 31 August there will be a new arrival, it will be minor. I think it's important we get a full back, but today I see those we have and who we have available, and I say that, if we put everything in order, we can have a great season.'

ON THE BALANCE OF THE PREPARATIONS - 'I don't want the absence of important players in this pre-season to be an excuse, but it's evident that it took its toll. During the preparation we never had certain fundamental players available, others started working with the group but were forced to stop, while others didn't train consistently. But we can't deny we also struggled a lot. However, I can't think that this preparation describes what Milan are and will be. It's true, we had difficult moments and there were defeats, but we also had many positive things, such as the lack of serious injuries: the result from a physical point of view was certainly a good aspect of these preparations.'

ON MILAN'S REAL POSSIBILITIES - 'Realistically what must change in this team is the attitude. The basis is formed by champions who have won everything, many of which have been here for almost ten years. It's clearly an extraordinary basis. Now we have to work on the motivation, the pride, it's about putting together the personal and team objectives and start from there. Milan have won everything but want to continue growing, compete again: to do that you need the right stimulation. Take Nesta: he not only recovered from his injury but also changed attitude: he is available to excess, he does anything we ask, sometimes we have to stop him. If everyone of us finds a personal motivation the way Nesta did, we'll have something more that can take us far. I don't want to be optimistic at all costs, but it's clear that Milan cannot be the team seen until now. The talent is undeniably there in this team. There's also spirit of sacrifice, order and discipline. The ingredients are all there to win. We cannot enter a tunnel of pessimism. The team must do better, but I am calm: now is the time to restart, I believe in it. If we give everything we have, we can have a good season. The basis is there, as is the playing idea. We just need to restart.'

ON RONALDINHO: "In the last three years he hasn't managed to express himself at the height of his talent; if we think of what he was three/four years ago, we are far from that Ronaldinho, but if we think of recent times he's been doing better, he has grown, he is trying to get back to his best. He is a healthy player, he's done the entire preparation, he's doing well and he's changed his position on the pitch a bit. He has to take his responsibilities, he has to increase in consistency, but he is putting in effort. His job is to perform on the pitch, be on time for the trainings and doing well. He is doing that sometimes, but he needs to find more consistency.'

ON HUNTELAAR: 'I already appreciated that he wanted to play the Tim Trophy after just one training with us. Obviously he has to enter our playing mechanisms, slowly he will do it.'

ON THE FORMATION: 'We started with an idea and then lately we have returned to our trademark system which is the 4-3-1-2. It's a system that requires effort and fatigue, it's obvious that we all have to be at our best even though we know it perfectly. The tactical aspect doesn't worry me because I know we only need to grow athletically. For the future we have other ideas, we'll see on each occasion also on the basis of the men we have available.'

EDIT: And here (from acmilan.com's english page) are the call ups:

Storari, Roma
Antonini, Favalli, Jankulovski, Kaladze, Nesta, Oddo, Onyewu, Thiago Silva, Zambrotta
Abate, Flamini, Gattuso, Pirlo
Borriello, Huntelaar, Inzaghi, Pato, Ronaldinho
dst
No one knows how good a coach Leonardo is going to be but at least he's honest and I appreciate that. Finally, someone from Milan talks about motivation, it was about ****ing time!!

Also this:
QUOTE

With Ancelotti I had almost forgotten teams change their tactics based on the available players.

We desperately needed change and while Leonardo obviously was not the ideal solution, the worst that can happen is that things remain the same; shitty.
maldini03
If for nothing else I appreciate Leonardo for giving the chance to the younger players. As an Italian and a Milan fan i am delighted to see Abate getting better everytime he plays. I think he will be our revalation of the season.
Tennie
+1.

Fishdoll and I are both thrilled to see Abate getting time. He clearly deserves it and he's one of the few bright spots of the preseason.
whoarethepatriots
Im glad that Leonardo is giving chances to our youth players. I just hope he persists with this attitude and not the Carlo "play them for 12 seconds" Ancelotti approach

Real Madrid ace Kaka has told his former Milan team-mates to beat Juventus in the Berlusconi Trophy later tonight.

The Brazilian, who moved to Spain this summer in a headline grabbing transfer, still holds a place in his heart for the Rossoneri. Kaka's former side have been having a troubled pre-season, but the playmaker is on hand to help motivate his old colleagues.

"We hope to beat Juventus," Kaka told La Gazzetta Dello Sport, suggesting he is still a Milan fan.

"Milan have to win, they already have good players."

On Sunday, Kaka made a surprise visit to Milanello after Real Madrid allowed him a two-day rest period.

The Rossoneri clash with Juve at the San Siro tonight for the annual Silvio Berlusconi Trophy.

Okay, it's from Tuttosport, but given that Abate played for Toro last year, it's probably accurate.

Here's what they have quoted him as saying about today's game:
QUOTE
"Per me è un derby. Sono nato e cresciuto nel Milan, quindi il mio derby è con l’Inter, ma l’anno scorso a Torino mi sono trovato benissimo, ho instaurato un bellissimo rapporto con i compagni e la tifoseria, che mi ha sempre trattato molto bene. Quindi la sfida con la Juventus, per me, è un vero derby".

[For me it's a derby. I grew up in the Milan youth system, and thus my derby's with Inter, but last year I did really well at Torino, had a great rapport with teammates and the fans who always treated me really well. Therefore the game with Juventus, for me, is a real derby.]

Fishdoll did a bit of lurking. Our friends at the Juventuz forums are reasonably confident about a win in this one. Their main concern is that none of their players get hurt (last year Chiellini got hurt in this game and a couple of years ago was when Kaka dislocated Buffon's shoulder).
