Germany lost to France at home? that is a surprise.

Well, some key players missed (Neuer, Lahm, Götze, Schweinsteiger, S. Bender, etc.) and it's a tradition: Germany actually didn't win against France in a friendly for the last 15 or even more years. I wouldn't worry.

They really do. But sadly, so does most of the other NT as well.

Btw. Croatia loses to Sweden 1-3. Ibra scored and made an assist.

How was that Guidetti kid (if he played at all), Mino said he might gift us the kid... 18 goals in 16 league games for Feyenoord...

We lost 3-2, how the hell did that happen?!

Fell asleep after about 55 minutes it was ridiculously boring.

Always been this good. king.gif In fact, deep down inside, I just wanted him to come play for Milan. You can see my posts here when we signed him, 9 out of 10 were against the signing, thinking of him as a hot head, washed up player. I wasn't, I knew he'd gel right in and become an important player for us, because of his experience.

While my friends who were Bayern fans were crying their hearts out, when Van Bommel left them.

Came in late, so there wasn't much time to show off. He had a nice opportunity, but it was called offside.

Yes. Don't you remember him from his PSV years? He may have reached his low with Barcelona, but at Bayern he was awesome.

I actually felt the opposite! Really enjoyed the first half and despite 5 goals the 2nd half seemed to drag.

Everyone keeps pointing out that our 3 group opponents for the Euros all won away while we lost at home. Might as well not go then. biggrin.gif

Another injury for Giuseppe Rossi. He'll stay another 6 months out. No Euros for him.

The guy is terribly unlucky when it comes to National Team spots in competitions. sad.gif Terribly unlucky. And to think a lot of American NT fans are still disappointed in him choosing to play for Italy. But first the World Cup, and now the Euros. Cruel hand of fate.

lmao, just when I thought the FA were incapable of becoming more incapable this happens.
kurtsimonw
I like him. Done well everywhere except Liverpool, but then he was never going to succeed there with how that club is.
Milan Are Brilliant
Don't think he's great at the top level unfortunately, Liverpool as you mentioned, Inter etc. Not saying England are that but in terms of the media circus, ego's etc they are.

If he gets us out of the group stage that should be counted as a tremendous success to be honest.
kurtsimonw
I really think he's the best option. The only other name really being mentioned is someone that can only ahceive average success by massive overspending. Hodgson's been at clubs where money isn't really there and done very well, West Brom this and last season have greatly overacheived and as did Fulham with him there. He can get things done with the players he has to work with and that's what International football is about.
Milan Are Brilliant
Though it's a hell of a lot easier working with those guys than the ones in our international team in all fairness and coming under the spotlight of the English media 24/7. Just don't know if he will be able to hack it but to be honest would anyone?

It's kind of like Everton fans expecting the club to win the Premier League, then firing each boss if they didn't, it's stupid really.
kurtsimonw
I really don't know how the media will be for this. Hodgson wasn't even the favourite for the job, but is very well liked by the media, so maybe they won't start with the whole "we're going to win it" crap and put a tonne of pressure on him. With the past few managers being foreign it's almost as if out media wanted them to fail at tournements.

The German 27-man training squad.

QUOTE
Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich), Tim Wiese (Werder Bremen), Ron Robert Zieler (Hannover), Marc-André ter Stegen (Borussia Mönchengladbach)

Holger Badstuber, Jérôme Boateng, Philipp Lahm (all Bayern Munich), Benedikt Höwedes (Schalke), Mats Hummels, Marcel Schmelzer (both Borussia Dortmund), Per Mertesacker (Arsenal)

Sven Bender, Mario Götze, Ilkay Gündoğan (all Borussia Dortmund), Lars Bender, Andre Schürrle (both Bayer Leverkusen), Julian Draxler (Schalke), Toni Kroos, Thomas Müller, Bastian Schweinsteiger (all Bayern Munich), Sami Khedira, Mesut Özil (both Real Madrid), Marco Reus (Borussia Mönchengladbach)

Lukas Podolski (Cologne), Cacau (Stuttgart), Mario Gomez (Bayern Munich), Miroslav Klose (Lazio)

Stegen, Gundogan, Lars Bender and Draxler to miss out on the Euros? My prediction anyway. Stegen looks like he'll be yet another amazing keeper though.

I'd eliminated Ziegler, Gündoğan, Lars Bender and Draxler - maybe Schürrle - so mostly the same. I'm a bit surprised how Helmes didn't got the call-up but Cacau instead.
Jack Sparrow
Me too...perhaps coz tactically Cacau presents the more interesting option. Helmes is a finisher and they have 2 who are ahead of him in Klose and Gomez.

If Cacau will go, then I would say those too. Schürrle really showed good skill as LW for Germany, I would absolutely take him over Draxler. smile.gif

It would be a disgrace to not pick Ter Stegen after his amazing season + (end of) last season. He has been better than any other German goalkeeper this season, and I am convinced he is better already than both Wiese and Zieler.
Fillipo Simone
And that's why maybe he'll be surpassed. You see, sometimes the 2nd and especially 3rd keeper isn't the best of all available, but a solid/good keeper and a team player. Remember Amelia for Italy.

Ter Stegen has been most solid/good of all of them, and why shouldn't he be a team player? I don't get that...

Wiese I understand, experience, penalty killer... so Wiese, Neuer, and Ter Stegen... but Zieler ahead of Ter Stegen?!

As I said earlier on, you don't know how ter Stegen is as a team player. He had a very bad relationship with Bernd Leno. Maybe Löw does not want to make experiments at a big tournament. Ziegler has been picked as third keeper for most of this season, so I think he'll go with him.

Like I said, it isn't always the 3rd best keeper that gets picked ahead as 3rd choice NT keeper. Weidenfeller is better then Ziegler if you ask me, and so is ter Stegen or Leno. Yet maybe Ziegler has the chemistry with other players.
Zed.D
Puyol and probably Villa to miss the Euros.

As much as I'm sorry for them, especially Puyol, this is good new for Italy, they can take their 2008 revenge. and also good news for Germany, who always seem to go all the way only to lose to Spain.

Not that these two losses is the end of the world for the #1 team in the world, but they've won a lot, I don't think they will have the same drive and determination as previous Euros and WC this time around.
kurtsimonw
Puyol is past it, I really don't rate him.

They have a superb CB partnership in Pique and Ramos, so I don't think they'll suffer much Puyol's absence.

A Guide To Criticising Hodgson's Squad Selection

Captain: if someone who has been captain before, "predictable". If not, "wrong".

Average age of squad over 26: too old, over-reliance on the failed so-called "golden generation".
Average age of squad under 26: inexperienced/ruining our chances for the Olympics (I forget whether we care about this or not).

Goalkeepers:
Joe Hart: obvious choice and deserves no credit.
Rob Green: plays for a championship club. Only selected due to failure to persuade anyone else out of retirement, ergo poor man-management.
Ben Foster: nepotism.

Right back:
Failure to take all of Micah Richards, Glen Johnson, Kyle Walker, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling constitutes a decision, and therefore automatically a risky/wrong one.

Left back:
Ashley Cole: obvious, deserves no credit.
If a back-up is selected: unnecessary, waste of a squad place (cf. Stephen Warnock). If not: short-sighted.

Centre back:
Failure to persuade Rio and Terry to play together is poor man-management. Success is "too risky".

Central Midfield:
Gerrard: make reference to Hodgson's time at Liverpool and cast doubt on ability to get a performance out of him.
Lampard: too similar to Gerrard. If not picked, make unflattering AVB comparisons.
Scott Parker: would certainly perform better if 'Arry was manager
Carrick/Barry: boring.
Scholes: if picked, desperate. If not picked, a missed opportunity
Anyone else: an unknown quantity.

Wings:
Joe Cole: if not picked, point out that he has been playing brilliantly in France. If picked, point out that he has been rubbish in France. No-one will bother to check either way.
Ashley Young: if picked, diver that will not fool continental referees, therefore a waste of space. If not picked, point to past goalscoring form and ability to win penalties.
Adam Johnson: if picked, has hardly played for Man City this season. If not picked, has hardly played for Man City this season and would have bought much-needed freshness to the squad.
Walcott: if picked, has only ever performed that one time against Croatia. If not picked, performed that one time against Croatia.
Stewart Downing: if picked, 0 goals 0 assists. If not picked, bemoan lack of natural left-footers in the squad.
Anyone who plays for Swansea: if picked, they play for Swansea, a small club. If not, harshly overlooked.

Strikers:
Rooney: if picked, waste of a squad place. We'll be out after 2 games anyway. If not picked, have "ROO-DICULOUS!!!" headlines on standby.
Andy Carroll: if picked, has been rubbish all season. If not, has been brilliant for the last two games.
Defoe: if picked, has not played all season. If not, gifted finisher, adds freshness to the squad, 'Arry would have picked him.
Crouch: if picked, exposes England's dearth of strikers. If not, think of the wonder-goal.
Sturridge/Welbeck: if picked, inexperienced. If not, robbing the future of English football of valuable tournament experience.

For tabloid journalists, this is a handy cut-out-and keep style guide. For anyone else, combine this with a copy of next Wednesday's Sun to form a potentially lethal drinking game.

There are several surprise new faces in the 32-man long-list for Italy at Euro 2012, including Mattia Destro, Antonio Di Natale, Ezequiel Schelotto and Marco Verratti.

Coach Cesare Prandelli named his squad this evening, although the Juventus, Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain players won’t begin training until next week, as they still have official commitments at club level.

Novelties include Rubin Kazan defender Salvatore Bocchetti and Udinese veteran Di Natale, who have not played under Prandelli’s reign before.

The real surprises are in younger players who have not figured in the senior Italy squad, such as Siena striker Destro, Juventus man Emanuele Giaccherini, Atalanta winger Schelotto, 19-year-old Pescara creative midfielder Verratti and Bologna midfielder Alessandro Diamanti.

Giorgio Chiellini’s presence depends on tests, as he limped off during today’s 3-1 win over Atalanta with a suspected thigh strain.

The list will be cut down to the final 23 for the tournament in Poland and Ukraine on May 29.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that Gigi Riva will not be travelling with the Italy squad for this competition due to ill health.

Goalkeepers:Buffon (Juventus), De Sanctis (Napoli), Sirigu (Paris St. Germain), Viviano (Palermo);

Defenders:Abate (Milan), Astori (Cagliari), Balzaretti (Palermo), Barzagli (Juventus), Bocchetti (Rubin Kazan), Bonucci (Juventus), Chiellini (Juventus), Criscito (Zenit San Pietroburgo), Maggio (Napoli), Ogbonna (Torino), Ranocchia (Inter);

Midfielders:Cigarini (Atalanta), De Rossi (Roma), Diamanti (Bologna), Giaccherini (Juventus), Marchisio (Juventus), Montolivo (Fiorentina), Thiago Motta (Paris St. Germain), Nocerino (Milan), Pirlo (Juventus),Schelotto (Atalanta), Verratti (Pescara);

Forwards:Balotelli (Manchester City), Borini (Roma), Cassano (Milan), Destro (Siena), Di Natale (Udinese), Giovinco (Parma)
