Cook blasts Milan behaviour

Tuesday 20 January, 2009

Manchester City chief executive Garry Cook has accused Milan of “losing their bottle” and “thinking only of money” during negotiations for Kaka.

The Rossoneri seemed to have accepted Kaka's exit for £107m, but the Diavolo idol rejected the switch.

The 11th-hour drama seems to have left a bitter taste in the mouths of the City representatives who spent hours in meetings trying to secure Kaka's services.

“We were ultimately disappointed,” Cook told Sky Sports News this morning.

“We travelled out there yesterday with good intentions, but they bottled it.

“We entered into a confidentiality agreement several weeks ago because we wanted to go through the process in a professional manner - they didn't want that and were only thinking of money.

“We never spoke to the player. We never had our questions answered. The offer was made to the club, who wanted to sell Kaka, then their story changed.

“Their footballer was for sale, we engaged with the club in order to buy him, but their landscape changed,” he concluded

Interesting, whether we believe it or not.

After rejecting such a huge offer, I hope no other club dares to knock the door for Kaka again. going through all these speculations in every transfer window is not endurable. not for me.

Kaká Rejected City Because He Wants Real Madrid - Report

If you thought that the Kaká saga was over, then think again because AS are at it once more and believe that the Brazilian turned down Manchester City because he is desperate to join Real Madrid.

Kaká rejected the move to Manchester City because he wants to join Real Madrid and feels betrayed by Milan after the Spanish giants reignited their interest in signing him, AS believe.

While Rossoneri officials hail Kaka's decision to remain in Italy as a victory of the heart over money and fan power over 'business', the Spanish daily sports paper has a different perspective.

Madrid are reported to have let Kaká and his father, Bosco, know that they could offer the star a bigger platform than Manchester City, a move which had some effect, according to the paper.

"The Brazilian superstar had one foot in Manchester, but finished with both in Milan, while his head is in Real Madrid," AS state.

"Kaka has reached the conclusion that Milan want to sell him. Since Monday he has felt betrayed and knows he is free to negotiate with the club he wants; Real Madrid."

AS is the paper that drew the ire of Milan officials for printing a front page with Kaká reading the publication while talking about his hopes of Madrid wining the league.

Now it is believed that Los Merengues could take advantage of the situation at Milan, but the Spanish club have their own problems after Ramón Calderón, who had previously promised to sign Kaká, resigned.

Sources from the club told the newspaper yesterday that "now is the moment to sign Kaká; he is the best player to bring to the team" but they also said that "the problem would be in convincing Vicente Boluda after he said that there would be no more signings".

AS quote the same source as stating: "Kaká would be a fantastic acquisition. He is 26 and is highly acclaimed. He would help us more than any other in the Champions League, even more so than Cristiano Ronaldo because he needs a team to shine, while Kaká makes a team shine."

While Kaká has a contract until 2013 at the San Siro, he is waiting for a firm sign from Madrid, the paper goes on, but the paradox is that the Spanish club did not sign him when they had the chance.

"Kaká feels ignored," AS continue. "After the arrival of Ronaldinho and Beckham, Berlusconi wasted little time in nearly selling him.

"Given the choice between trophies and money, then the latter comes first. At least, that is the case for the sheikh, the player's father and for Berlusocni, but not for Kaká himself."

This time the Madrid-leaning publication looks set to take over from where Marca left off with Cristiano Ronaldo and ignore what everyone else is saying, in particular Kaká himself, who has made it clear that he has no intention of leaving Milan.

"I feel great in a place where everybody loves me and I'm very happy to stay," he told Italian TV.

So I made a point last night of watching Sky Sports News (broadcast at 7pm my time) and Fox Soccer Report (broadcast at 10).

Sky News had the story as their top news item. They showed pictures of Kaka on his balcony holding up the jersey, had interviews with tifosi, with City supporters, etc. The general tone of their coverage was 'fair play to Kaka, he loves Milan and it's nice to see someone not going for the money'.

Fox Soccer relegated their coverage to the second half hour after going on in detail about the Everton-Liverpool game and then reviewing the entire weekend's EPL games, with highlights. Their comment was 'surprised he's not going to the EPL, City were offering him a good deal'.

This perhaps illustrates why I at least don't particularly like Fox Soccer Channel. smile.gif

I like Fox Soccer...just not their talking heads

if he had signed they would've cut whatever they were broadcasting to go straight to that. they do the poorest job ever of hiding their bias.

Regarding Garry Cook's comments, I think it's clear that he's bitter orver the whole situation. I would be if I got played like that.

Barlusoni took everone for a ride just for some good publicity. Everyone loves a hero story at the end of the day, and that is what Silvio has made it. Too bad Man City bought into it. They should really lower their expectations, money might buy everything but you can't hide the history (or lack there of) of the club, and you can't hide the fact that said club is current a few points just above the drop zone. The money might be alluring but the prospect of playinf Championship football is not

Beckham Believes Kaká Wants Real Madrid Move - AS

AS are persevering with their coverage of Real Madrid's alleged pursuit of Kaká and now believe that David Beckham has told a friend that the Brazilain could move to the Bernabéu in June.

David Beckham has revealed that Kaká wants to go to Real Madrid in the summer and did not want to join Manchester City, according to AS. The Brazilian has allegedly asked the former England captain about life in the Spanish capital.

The daily sports paper is beginning what will undoubtedly be a sustained campaign to see Kaká join Los Merengues after stating that he turned down a move to England because he wants to join Juande Ramos' side.

AS believe that Beckham, who has only been at the San Siro a few weeks, has been probed by the Brazilian superstar about life at Real Madrid and that has convinced the England international of his intentions.

"Kaká wants to go to Real Madrid and not to City. I think he'll become a Real player in June," the on-loan playmaker told a friend, AS state.

"I think someone has called him and Kaká has made his decision."

While the saga involving Manchester City maybe over, AS look set to revive their running commentary on Madrid's pursuit of the player, only months after riling Milan with similar stories.

Earlier in the day, the paper stated that Kaká had turned down City, but was disillusioned with Milan despite his public pledge to stay with the club.

Ramón Calderón had promised to sign Kaká in his pre-election manifesto, but when then Rossoneri laughed off the suggestion the former Madrid president struggled to win over critics who were unimpressed with his false promise.

Beckham, AS add, has something of a history of correct predictions as he apparently said that Ronaldo would move to AC Milan over three years ago, when the pair were team-mates at the Bernabéu.

If AS want to quote someone they should atleast make them direct quptes, not quotes from friends of friends of friends of Beckham.

Kaká: Either I Stay At Milan Or I Join Real Madrid

The Kaká transfer saga is bound to hit hyperdrive again after the Brazilian maestro opened the door for a move to Los Blancos.

Most of the soundbites in the aftermath of Kaká’s collapsed transfer to Manchester City have centred mainly around the reaction of his club-mates, his fans and football purists, all gushing about how relieved they are that the playmaker extraordinaire chose to stay a Milanista.

But AS, the Spanish sports-journal which began the rumours a few days ago that Kaká turned down the move to City because he wanted to join Real Madrid, has picked up an interesting quote from the player himself.

“Either I stay at Milan or I join Real Madrid,” was what the 26-year-old reportedly told his father and representative, Bosco Leite.

The remark does little to suggest that the former FIFA World Player is craving for a move to the Spanish capital, but it does indicate that both he and Los Merengues now have the upperhand over Milan.

In previous years, the Rossoneri were always in control of the situation, turning down Madrid’s advances time and again while the attacking midfielder stood quietly by. But now, the tables have been turned as Kaká realises that his club would not hesitate to cash in on him should the right bid come along, while the blancos recognise that a rare window of opportunity has just opened up for them.

But there’s more to it. AS is now speculating that there could be a second contender to challenge Madrid for Kaká's signature: Barcelona.

The Blaugrana have not really declared any interest to bring the playmaker to the Camp Nou, but with the club about to have their elections soon, as do Madrid, potential candidates on both sides could use ‘Ricky’ as a pre-election promise to win the presidency.

How the world's biggest transfer fell apart
Garry Cook, Manchester City's executive chairman, has criticised Milan after the £91m Kaka saga ended in dismay

Daniel Taylor
The Guardian, Wednesday 21 January 2009
Article history

From start to finish the Kaka transfer saga took 34 days. Photograph: Koichi Kamoshida/Getty Images

From start to finish, the whole process took 34 days. It was 15 December when Manchester City's executive chairman, Garry Cook, first made contact with Milan. "I'll come out with this straight away," he said over the phone to Adriano Galliani, the club's vice-president. "We want your best player and I'm ringing up to see how much you want for him."

Galliani listened and said he would speak to Silvio Berlusconi, the president. Later that day, a fax came through to Cook's office. It was signed by Galliani and told him Kaka was available if City "delivered the sum of 200 million". Cook jokingly faxed back: "Is that lira?"

The important thing was that Milan were willing to do business. Cook reported the breakthrough to Sheikh Mansour, the club's owner, and Mark Hughes, the manager. A six-man team, including three lawyers, was put together, and so began the exhaustive process of trying to conclude perhaps the most audacious transfer of all time. So where did it all go wrong and how did it reach the stage that City should get their fingers burned so badly?

Those are questions that Cook was still asking himself yesterday as he and Simon Pearce, Sheikh Mansour's personal envoy, tried to make sense of it all. It has been a chastening experience and has led to concerns about Robinho's future in Manchester, and Cook did not mince his words. "They bottled it," he says of Milan. "We weren't naive. It was just that the world we entered into was unprofessional. We engaged a lot of professional people to take care of this deal. But it was all a bit too sophisticated for Milan."

Milan have been on their own PR offensive, of course. According to the Italians, the decision was purely Kaka's and he chose to turn down City because he could not bear the idea of leaving San Siro. Kaka himself has said it "took only 30 seconds to make up my mind".

Cook's is a very different take. "We never met the player and we simply didn't make an offer [of personal terms] to Kaka," he said. "All of which makes it difficult for us to swallow the suggestion that he rejected Manchester City. There was nothing to reject."

What we can say for certain is that it is a lesson in the complexities of what it is like to negotiate the transfer of a genuine superstar and the minefield of legalities, politics, agents, interpreters and egos.

City, for instance, have documents to show that, by the time the transfer window opened on 1 January, a fee had been agreed for the Brazilian. Milan had slashed their initial asking price to £91m, to be paid in five instalments. A confidentiality agreement had been signed and the vibes were so positive Hughes, had gone as far as planning a new 4–1–4–1 formation, with Kaka playing in his best position as an advanced central midfielder.

By the time Cook boarded a private jet back to Manchester after the first face-to-face talks between himself, other high-ranking City officials and the Milan hierarchy, he and his colleagues were in a celebratory mood. "They [Milan] had made it quite clear that they wanted to sell their prize possession to us," he claims.

But this was only the first part of what Cook calls "a three-stage process" and it is the second phase where it gets increasingly complicated.

First, the story was leaked. Cook blames Milan for this, although various people at the City end may have been loose-lipped, too. Either way, it meant a flood of protests in Milan and, by the time Cook's team arrived in the city on Monday to meet Galliani and Bosco Leite, Kaka's father and agent, there were thousands of fans on the streets. "After that, the pressure was building on Milan," says Cook. "There was political pressure on Milan and supporter pressure. You could feel that pressure on the senior executives. The confidentiality should never have been broken."

Even so, City remained optimistic. They had been led to believe that Kaka was keen to come and excited about their plans. City, in turn, were prepared to make him the highest paid footballer in the world. But first – and this is really the crux – they wanted to do due diligence on the player's contract and commercial income.

"You like to know what you are getting before you make your offer to the player," Cook says. "We were trying to run through a professional process to understand. Kaka has a number of sponsors and complex agreements and inside those agreements are clauses that could affect the needs of his sponsors. That part had to be agreed before we could get to offering personal terms with the player. But his representatives simply didn't want to get to the complexities and the sophistication of the second stage."

City's representatives asked Bosco if they could look at his son's financial documents and the complexities of his different sponsorship agreements. "No," they were allegedly told. "Not even Milan get to see them." Cook says: "They just didn't get where we were coming from."

Kaka, City did establish, earns £12m a year after tax with a further £7m-8m from commercial revenue. Cook was once in charge of the Michael Jordan brand at Nike, estimated he could increase Kaka's endorsements 10-fold. "But all they wanted was to talk about salary and compensation for the player. They simply couldn't answer the questions."

The talks lasted seven hours and ended with an agreement that they would meet again the following morning and then arrange a further meeting in London. Yet Cook had picked up bad vibes when he spoke to Galliani in private. "He [Galliani] said his life had changed since the story had come out," says Cook. "He had had to move offices and employ protection.

"What really set the alarm bells ringing was that he also said they had already figured out with Kaka that they would come out with a joint statement saying they were pleased to say he was staying. They clearly had a strategy in place."

Everything came to a head when Cook received a call in the departure lounge at Linate airport. The man on the line was Alberto Zilani, a translator for Kaka's father, Bosco. There was, in Pearce's words, a "sudden change in emphasis".

According to Pearce, it was put to City that they needed to let Bosco know exactly what salary Kaka would earn, and that if they did not do it immediately the deal was in jeopardy. "There was a requirement for much more speed and a much greater focus on cash," he says. "Garry's response was that's not the way we wanted to conduct the talks and we would have to terminate the discussions there."

Cook went to ring Hughes to break the bad news. Milan, meanwhile, went into overdrive. "Garry got the telephone call at 11.03pm," says Pearce. "Within eight minutes Mr Berlusconi had called the most popular live television show in Italy and said, 'I have great news for you. Kaka has rejected the offer'. Then, suddenly, Kaka is out on his balcony waving to the Milan fans. They had got everything covered."

The meeting took place at the offices of Milan's lawyers and Cook felt that City were unwelcome. "We were confined to a room with no food or drink. We were starving by the time it finished. They gave us a cup of coffee so it would be unfair to say there was nothing. But the hospitality wasn't the finest. It was interesting to see how they worked. The dynamics of it were strange, very unnerving. It wasn't a place we would want to be in."

Is there an Italian version of the events anywhere?

Whether or not things happened the way this guy has claimed,it sounds like there may have been some serious misunderstanding during the deal.

That bolded part is very telling.

I agree with you, had it been a big club like Real they would never have let them near Kaka, neither talked to them about any possible move.

I personally believe this whole thing was engineered from the very beginning. City would have never been a major treath and no way Kaka would want to move there so Silvio decided to use the situation to his advantage. Let things progress to the point where it was confirmed on Milan channel that a deal was agreed upon and that only Kaka needed to sign on the dotted line. Just after this announcement Kaka is escorted by police from his home to the Milan headquarters. When everyone is expecting an announcement to be made that the move was official Silvio breaks the news in his usual over the top way, thus making himself look like a hero.

If Kaka was also involved in this like Cook is saying I wouldn't find it that hard to believe. He knew he wouldn't be leaving and in the end it only made him look better then he already did.

Miz, posted a gaurdian article a while back on this thread, that was saying that this was an engineered plan by Milan. I wouldn't find it hard to believe if it's true.

At the end of the day Man City are the ones who came out looking like idiots, that no matter what cash they throw around at the big players they are still Man City.

I think if this deal had happened, both sides would have pointed the finger at one another. Kaka would have said he was forced out, and Silvio would have said Kaka forced his way out. I'm glad that Kaka did not leave for City as it would have condemned him to, at the best, a season of UEFA Cup football, or at the worst the Coca Cola Championship.

Still, a few years ago another Italian team sold a french player for some cash, and had enough in the coffers to buy some talented players (and some referees). I think that 26-28 is the prime time to sell a player in terms of getting good money, and we do need reinforcements at every part of the field.

AC Milan general manager Adriano Galliani has hinted Kaka could join Real Madrid if Florentino Perez becomes president of the Spanish giants.

Speculation increased about Kaka's future when Milan allowed him to talk to Manchester City about a possible world-record transfer to Eastlands.

The 26-year-old Brazil star opted to remain in Italy but reports suggest Madrid will make a firm attempt to bring him to the Bernabeu this summer.

And Galliani admits it would be tougher to resist an approach from the Primera Liga side if Perez wins the presidential elections.

"I don't want to talk about Kaka, but I can say that with friends like Florentino anything can happen," said the Milan chief in quotes reported by Spanish sports daily Marca.

"Florentino Perez is a great entrepreneur and a good friend and I say that about few football chiefs."
