I love Nesta, I really do. But Kaka' and Sheva have been more decisive and important than him in the past decade.

I believe you are underestimating the influence Nesta had. The importance of having a solid central defense where the whole team relies on, it's important. It just isn't as eye catching as attacking players doing their thing.

I'm not underestimating anything. Nesta has been the best defender in the world of the last decade, and he's been more important to us than Maldini or anyone else in defense. But I say Kaka' and Shevchenko were more important for us, simply because without their goals and assists we wouldn't have won all those trophies. You could very well say that without Nesta's defending we wouldn't have won anything either, but it's not the same thing.

It's really hard to compare such things, but Nesta being the best defender in the world of the last decade makes me choosing him. Kaká and Sheva have been the best or so not as long. You say we needed their goals etc. That's true, but at the same time you need a solid defense. That comes first actually. tongue.gif

A team wins the Champions League, not a starlet. Kaka integrated well within the team, he is intelligent and knew how to utilize the assets around him; hence he shined. Both Seedorf and Inzaghi moved as if they were in-sync with Kaka, hence rendering the Champions League title in 2007.

But this did not happen in a flash, nor was it down to Kaka's intelligence alone. It was down to our team's efforts. Those of you who do not recognize those efforts, I suggest you re-watch the Champions League 2006-2007 season as it was not an easy competition from the preliminaries to the final.

By saying the above, I am not in anyway undermining Kaka's fantastic season in 2007, nor am I undermining Shevchenko in previous seasons. What I am saying is that Shevchenko and/or Kaka playing in a side like Brescia would not have shined as bright as they did along side their team-mates in Milan.

On a side note, Maldini is 2nd to none. Stating that Nesta is more important for the sake of argument is fine by me, but to state it as a fact is ludicrous. With everything taken into account, Maldini simply presented a commanding presence. I am not being biased by stating that, but the confidence that the team had when Maldini was on the pitch was simple extraordinary.

This. A 1000 times over! king.gif This needs to be posted twice. Or thrice! tongue.gif Nesta and Maldini is my favorite defensive pairing of all time, but Nesta on his best day can't touch Maldini on his worst. They are both immensely gifted, absolute gentlemen, and head and shoulders above the rest, but Paolo had that special aura about him that Nesta lacked. In any case, think of them as Superman (Maldini) and Batman (Nesta): 2nd to none, but Maldini was blessed with that special glow that can't be put in words. Call it leadership, class, sportsmanship a mixture of it all, anything.

I read on an English website (BBC or Guardian was it), that Maldini was the only player alive that absolutely made a particular number and position his own. Meaning any team and any World XI, Paolo was destined for #3 and destined for LCB (or LB, if you will). cool.gif That for me is a praise as good as any for once in a lifetime player. When you have people on a Juve forum (with Del Piero avatars) praising Maldini, and even the inter chaps admitting his sheer class, then you are talking about someone. laugh.gif Even the English press and general fans have mountains of respects for him and him alone in the Italian league (just like they respect the real Ronaldo), don't believe me just visit a few UK sites. But like I said, if I was Maldini and if I had to select a defender to put a clean-sheet if my life depended on it, I'd choose Nesta without thinking for a second.

Point is that Paolo was giving in the level of performance at 40 that Nesta is giving now. An age difference of five or six vital years. He was instrumental in 2003 CL win, the 2005 final appearance and the 2007 win (got the best defender award there). To be fair to Nesta he has been really unlucky with injuries and frankly had to spend extended periods on complete sidelines. sad.gif But the thing that nails it for me is how classy Paolo when tackling, always taking care not to injure the opponent player. Nesta had the tendency to move in with a clumsy challenge and get both parties into trouble (more so in his early years, he has gotten a hold of it now a days). When you have guys like R99 and Zidane saying that they preferred coming from the right side of the pitch because Maldini was prowling on the left says all there is to say. And this without taking into account his elegance, personality, and mannerisms off the field.

This was the first video I ever watched on Youtube, I clearly remember. What a brilliant compilation! Heck, my first post here in Milanfan was in Maldini's thread. When we won the 2007 CL, we had both a face (Kaka) and the icon of the club (Maldin), both complete elegance and class, now we have lost both. Though we had brief new faces (R80 last season, and Ibra now), both are literally sandbags and have the charisma of a carrot in front of the King of Kings, the God of Football: Paolo Maldini. The soul of the club, one we seemed to have lost and with it fallen of grace. Heck, we are now stealing minutes off the clock, a small-club mentality that I have never in my life seen Milan do.

PS. I still maintain Paolo was the player of the last decade as well. He played till 2009, and I don't have the stats, but most probably featured a bit more than Nesta. So our captain first, Kaka, second, Sheva third, Nesta fourth, ad Dida fifth. wink.gif The pillars of our success. The midfield engines (Rui, Gattuso, Pirlo, Seedorf, Ambro) come next along with the guys on the left and right flanks (Cafu, anyone?).

PPS. You may get a feeling from my post that Nesta is sort of way behind Maldini, he is not. It's just that we are talking about players of such high caliber that there is an immense void below them. As I said above, it's Paolo, Nesta and then the other mortals.

PPPS. Did I say, brilliant post, Protagonist? biggrin.gif Great job!

I think that's a more realistic duration, I don't think it's either a dislocation or a break. He didn't look in that much pain for it to be either of those 2.
Fillipo Simone
Exactly. Let's just hope for the best.

Is it possible to post English sources for those of us who aren't exactly fluent in Italian? Much appreciated.

Use google translate. English sources are not exactly report Milan's every move as fast as some Italian sites, to say the least.

“The only flaw of the evening is the injury to Alessandro Nesta. He'll be out for two or three weeks and in this period it means he'll miss six or seven games.

In his post-match comment after Cesena he says 4-5 weeks. (check acmilan.com)

Nah, he should be back in a month. That's what every Italian media has been reporting today.

Yep. Our official site is saying 3-4 weeks.

Rino and Seedorf are out for about 3 weeks as well.
William405
Wow the injuries!Long term as well.
Although,um,I could see this being an advantage for Strasser+Merkel who will try and prove themselves if they get the opportunity while Seedorf and Gattuso are injured.
X-Offender
I'm glad Seedorf and Gattuso will be out for 3 weeks (useless players IMO). This will give the chance to people like Flamini, Emanuelson, Strasser and Merkel to play more. Also, Pirlo and Boateng should be back for Catania this Saturday, so hopefully we won't be in an emergency situation again, like we were against Cesena.

Sampdoria match thread,anyone? ;p

It's on Wednesday.
acid911
I'd love to, but I've stopped opening match threads since Paolo Maldini retired. sad.gif And to think my record was quite good too. But I am sure either Fillipo or Han will open that in a bit. Or Ari. Or Blue. And where in blue blazes is Trini, he can open match threads too. tongue.gif smile.gif By the way, I'm not one bit happy that we have a tight schedule of games now and almost all of our midfield is out due to injury.

How many times will you repeat this? I'm not glad they're injured, injuries usual don't make me happy.

Seedorf is one way or another a bench player now, what's the deal other then you showing once again your harsh opinion?

Someone said in the match thread yesterday something about Nesta's "Costacurta" haircut. Does that mean he has short hair now? If so, I demand to see a pic.

He's 35 already. When are we gonna find someone like him again? As World Class as Thiago Silva is, he doesn't possess the swagger that Nesta has.

The day Nesta steps back Milan will finally lose their defensive magic. It's sad that after Collovati, Baresi, Maldini, Costacurta and finally Nesta the great row breaks and Milan stays without a real heir.
