Thing is, Danny, a sub-par Nesta is still probably one of the top 3 CBs in the league and one of the top 10 in Europe.

This is what our captain did last night while the guy with the armband has another mediocre game. He did make two mistakes but that's normal when he's playing for three...
I think the penalty decision was right. If you look carefully at 1:11 you can see that Burdisso gets Nesta's legs first and the ball second... that's a penalty.
The ref's performance overall was terrible though, Ambrosini should not have been shown a second yellow (or was it a straight red?), Menez should have had a penalty and some fouls were easily given for both sides.

Is it me or we just really miss a creative midfielder? I mean, Nesta is doing a libero. while he does it very good for a defender, it shows just how sad we are.

QUOTE (Football Italia)
Nesta: 'Kaka fears Milan'
Tuesday 20 October, 2009
Alessandro Nesta has welcomed Kaka wanting to eliminate Milan from the Champions League. “It’s because Real Madrid fear us.”
The former Rossoneri star moved to the Bernabeu this summer for £56m and will come face to face with his old teammates for the first time on Wednesday night.
Although he said he will not celebrate, Kaka did state he wanted to win the match and knock them out of the competition.
“It’s because Kaka knows us and Real Madrid fear us,” smiled Nesta in a Press conference. “They realise we have always done well in the Champions League.
“It will be exciting to see him again and play against him. He left wonderful memories in all of us in the locker room. We know his style, but players like him are unpredictable.”
It will also be a battle between the top scorers in Europe, Raul and Pippo Inzaghi.
“Pippo has not promised us any goals, but I know he cares a great deal about his record. Raul is similar, they are players who in the box can be smarter than the rest.”
Nesta’s strong performances this season after finally putting a long-term injury behind him have prompted calls for an Azzurri comeback.
“Absolutely not, I confirm my decision to retire. I will always cheer on Italy and have an excellent rapport with Marcello Lippi, but I have made my choice.
“As for injuries, this is my seventh ‘comeback’ and I hope it’s also the last. I am happy to be back and above all to be healthy. I knew I could do it.”

Great to see him returning to form. It has been a slow road, perhaps a predictably slow road given his injuries, but as Tennie says, an average Nesta is still excellent.
An on form one is simply the best defender on the planet.

The Italian journalist Carlo Pellegatti has nicknames for all the Milan players. Nesta's nickname is 'Tempesta Perfecta', ie 'Perfect Storm'.
I think today we've really truly seen why. Excellent defenisve work - the clearance from Pellissier when they were one on one (if most other guys tried that it probably would've been a penalty) - and two rare but nicely taken goals. Haven't seen him play this well in a long time.
Fishdoll +1 cookie to Nesta.

Report: Milan Defender Alessandro Nesta Considers Retirement
The ex-Lazio man played his last official game almost a year ago and is allegedly set to throw in the towel.
Milan’s 3-1 defeat by Napoli at the Stadio San Paolo on May 11, 2008, might have been Alessandro Nesta’s last Serie A appearance.
The 33-year-old has missed the entire campaign due to chronic back problems and La Gazzetta dello Sport reports this morning that he is considering quitting football.
The former Italian international featured in a friendly against Tiran last October and seemed close to making his comeback, but suffered a relapse and underwent surgery in February.
The rehabilitation process is now over and Nesta has resumed running at Milanello, but he has apparently not made much headway, despite the team's medical staff insisting that he is ‘clinically healed’.
Milan can’t wait on the defender forever and expect an answer from him over the next few weeks, as they will have to look for a replacement on the transfer market ahead of next season.
Nesta has represented only Lazio and Milan at club level and was capped 78 times by Italy.

Sportitalia has a long piece about Nesta's rebirth. it's really quite positive.
The Milannews editor is perhaps going a bit over the top in his praise -- he's calling for him to get the armband (which I think is fair given his on and off field behavior) but he's also comparing this year's Nesta to Franco Baresi. That..may be a bit much.
That said, he's really back. And right now, I think he's the most important player on the team.

Milan are damn lucky that Nesta has made a full recovery and has found his old self. One place where Milan are well covered is CB. Nesta should be the captain, he is the better replacement for Il Capitano. Ambrosini should keep the bench warm as he has been useless this season aside from getting bookings. Neither is Gattuso, if he don't watch it Abbate will make him personal bench warmer.

Well, even if I name one, that'd mean he's one of the best not
"the best" - which was my point. like dst said, he's at least as good as anyone else. IMO there are a few who are as good as anyone else too. so these few defenders who are as good as each other form that top x.
Terry and Puyol (judging them based on their performance over the past 12 months) are the two I'm sure I'd put in my top 5 list.

Of that lot Terry is probably the only one who's worth mentioning, because of his tenaciousness, and drive. Don't even get me started on Carragher. Chiellini...maybe we'll see.
Puyol is better, because his team is performing better? Because that reasoning cannot apply when you're comparing two players in isolation, and deciding who's skills are better. Nesta is easily the most skilled CB of his generation.

Carragher? Are you serious? Carragher is a terrible defender. Watch the goals Liverpool conceed, a good 90% are his fault. Nowhere near World class, he's just average. He has no pace, can't read the game, makes wreckless tackles, has a bad tempremant.. I wouldn't even have him on the bench at Milan.
