The news that Alessandro Costacurta will be back next season to assist Carlo Ancelotti was quite simply music to Rossoneri ears

MILAN - Alessandro Costacurta is Milan. Whether it be in day-to-day life or out on the field playing the game, Billy is a shining example of what the Rossoneri are all about. He is one of the original Invincibles from the nineties and is still playing in the first team today. His career has spanned a period of time in which Milan have maintained their place at the top of Europe and taken residence in the most prestigious ranks over the past five years. In what was announced to be his last season with Milan Costacurta hasn't just been a face among the crowd, he has been a force to be reckoned with just like in years past. He has always been there when Milan called and he was there again this season to play 180 minutes against Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League preliminary. If we are where we are today knocking on Athens' door, then it is because of the contribution that he made when we needed him most. He has been the inside man on the job for many years, surrounded by a family that loves him. And we aren’t just talking about the Rossoneri, even though they are family too. Billy's wife was there at Malpensa airport with a birthday cake to celebrate his 41st birthday and welcome back her hero and ours from Manchester. When Adriano Galliani announced that ‘Billy Costacurta will become like Carlo, the second assistant coach to Ancelotti, alongside Mauro Tassotti,’ it was quite simply music to our ears and to all those Rossoneri across the world that just can’t get enough of the likes of our good old Billy boy.

Costacurta embraces new career

Alessandro Costacurta will probably play his last game for Milan this weekend, but insists he’s not sad at hanging up his boots.

The veteran will start against Udinese at San Siro in a second string side, as the team prepares for the Champions League Final with Liverpool on May 23.

“This will be my final match, but right now I do not feel sad. Perhaps it is because next season I will still be here, or maybe the time to stop has come and I have experienced so much in my time,” said the defender.

‘Billy’ has already announced the next stage of his career in football – taking the assistant manager role to Carlo Ancelotti, his former teammate in Il Grande Milan of the late 1980s.

“I don’t really know the reason why, but I do not feel disappointed to be ending my playing days. In fact, I am enthusiastic to think I’ll be working with Ancelotti and these lads.”

He has already attended a party in his honour that the club staged on Thursday and revealed it was a memorable moment.

“It was a wonderful celebration and above all a great surprise,” he told Milan Channel. “Absolutely everyone was there, all the people I shared so much with over the years.

“I am frankly amazed I didn’t burst into tears. My son was there and as I was welling up I saw him and had to get myself together.”

Costacurta was born on April 24, 1966 and has spent a lifetime in the Rossoneri jersey, save for a season-long spell with Serie C1 club Monza in 1986-87.

He made his Serie A debut in a 1-0 victory away to Verona on October 10, 1987 and this is set to be his 458th top flight appearance, during which he scored just two goals.

During the Milan career Costacurta won seven Scudetto titles, four European Cups, two Intercontinental Cups, four European Super Cups, a Coppa Italia and five Italian Super Cups.

The man from Orago (Varese) was also an Italian international, putting together 59 caps and two goals after his debut in the 1-1 draw with Norway on November 13, 1991.

BILLY AFTER UDINESE

Here is what Billy Costacurta had to say after his final match: 'It was a great celebration. I want to thank everyone, the club and my team-mates and all the fans. Now, the moment has arrived for me to do something new and I think that the challenge of my new profession will be enough to keep me from looking back on the past. I had many options to choose from, but my main goal was to still be a member of this glorious club.'

What a fasntastic end to Billy's San Siro career, makes it all the more special that he scored.

Costacurta: Grazie Milan!

Alessandro ‘Billy’ Costacurta has thanked the club and fans for his emotional farewell game at San Siro.

“It’s a wonderful day and I am very grateful to everyone for this celebration. I have to thank the club, my teammates and my family,” said the 41-year-old defender.

His career with the Rossoneri lasted 27 years right from the youth system and will continue, as he is to become an assistant manager to Carlo Ancelotti along with current right-hand man Mauro Tassotti.

“I’ve always thought you have to dedicate yourself fully to a job and so in my new work I won’t have time to think about my playing days,” he added.

“About two weeks ago I was told that Carlo wanted me to stay with him in the Coaching staff. It was very pleasing and I am happy to take on this new role.

“There were many different options open to me after retirement, but my priority was to remain at Milan.”

Costacurta scored a goal in his final match, converting a penalty in the 3-2 home defeat to Udinese, as Milan fielded a reserve team ahead of the Champions League Final with Liverpool.

After the final whistle all the players – including those in the stands – came down on to the field wearing Costacurta’s Number 5 jersey.

They also gave the veteran ‘The Bumps’ in the centre circle and he did a lap of honour saluting the fans.

The legend made his Serie A debut for the side in a 1-0 win at Verona on October 25, 1987 and won a total of 23 trophies with the club.

He has notched up seven Scudetti, four European Cups, two Intercontinental Cups, four European Super Cups, five Italian Super Cups and the Coppa Italia

I'm not sure how the CL works with medals. I know in the EPL you have to make so many appearances to qualify for a medal.. Maybe it's like that?

No, Ronaldo won't get a medal as he's a Madrid player in this years CL.

I think he'll be involved in the celebrations and stuff.

I'm pretty sure Morientes did in 2005, and he'd already played for Real in that years Competition.

Maybe it's luck to buy an inelegible player from Real or something? smile.gif

I don't remember Morientes in that crazy night. in fact I don't remember anything from their celebration at all! but I'm sure you're right.
Real management must be pretty stupid to let such stars go in the middle of the season. that doesn't sound reasonable.

Billy praises Carlo era

Newly retired Milan stopper Alessandro Costacurta has spoken of his admiration for Coach Carlo Ancelotti in an exclusive interview with Football Italia.

In a side including so many high-profile stars the defender nicknamed ‘Billy’ has rarely received his fair share of the plaudits, but he will be remembered fondly by teammates and fans alike.

The 41-year-old quit football following the Diavoli’s triumph in Athens and revealed that he believes the current side to be the best he played in.

“I’ve played in three different Rossoneri eras and really you have to look at the results and say that Ancelotti has the best, with three Champions League Finals in five years, including two victories,” he stated.

“Under Capello we also dominated Europe, but this Milan side is stronger as we’re playing against better opposition – 15 years ago there were fewer sides who could challenge.”

After a lifetime spent on the pitch, Costacurta will take on a new role as Carletto’s assistant alongside Mauro Tassotti, but revealed that he would ideally become involved in the club’s transfer dealings.

“In 2001 I said we had to sign Zlatan Ibrahimovic, nobody listened to me though and the same happened the year before with Luca Toni at Vicenza,” he moaned.

“Perhaps that’s why they asked me to become assistant Coach and not a director. I was hoping to start as something like a director of sport, but instead I’ll be on the bench.

yeah he deserves one mad.gif

I agree...but he's always been overshadowed, by Baresi and then by Maldini. I suppose the great that he is, he considers himself fortunate to have played alongside him.

I still think it is a pity though that as a defender he will probably not be remembered as he ought to be except by the fans and his team mates.
