See I don't particularly care about who coaches Milan right now. I just pipe up, when everything is blamed on Carlo. There are quite a few negatives I find in him as a coach, but that's later.
Why Carlo should stay now, is because there isn't anyone else, who can prove remotely good. I have my reservations about Rijkaard, Spalletti and Prandelli being viable. Donadoni? I think everyone will be aghast. MvB...has balls, but not till he does something in Europe.
What I fear the most is Carlo if he's fired/leaves, could just stroll to Chelsea/Man City who'll happily get rid of their current coaches and hand him the reins. And this time, it'll be different. It will be HIS team. This means if he asks for person X, he won't get person X two years later or even a 'replacement' for person X who is second rate.
I'm talking of Brocchi (for Emerson), Oliveira (for Eto'o) and R80 (for Ribery...so far the best transfer).
And more importantly Carletto gives teams with money (only?) the kind of credibility they need. Man City with Mark Hughes in charge and Man City with Carlo Ancelotti in charge is a different monster altogether. Same with Chelsea. With Scolari their appeal is limited to perhaps Portugal and Brazil, but with Carlo?

To fire Carlo, without a proper alternative in place is to cut off your nose to spite your face.
DISCLAIMER: All of the above IMO

I agree with you that Carlo is not really treated well by the management. I've always said that the reason I think Carlo is being kept is because Galliani knows that he can stick his head into the coach's decisions and Carlo won't say anything. Something that won't be tolerated by other coaches. Also, like you mentioned the fact that he's never given the players he wants for his team.
On who would replace Carlo, I'm not going to name coaches because you've already mentioned some that I think would be good to take Carlo's place. I just want to say that I understand your apprehension towards changing coach, I am just as afraid as you are of what the change might bring. I'm as afraid of change as you are, but at some point there has to come a time when you say enough is enough. I don't want Carlo to be released in the middle of the season, but come next season I think a change in the coaching department is desperately needed. We'll see how this season goes, if by some miracle we win the Scudtto, I would still think it would be better if Carlo went. Like I said, it's better to leave the club known as one of the great coaches in the club's history rather then as someone who over stayed his welcome.
And again, I have nothing against Carlo, like acid said if you read some of my earlier posts, somewhere in the region of 2005 going into 2006 I was very pro Carlo, mainly because I was thinking like you Jack, "What happens once he leaves? We might be in a rough spot now but it could get worse if we changed coaches". But as things continued to get worse for us season by season ultimately leading to the UEFA Cup, I think change now is better then staying as we are
