Yeah, it's not Cristiano Ronaldo, but it's a big Asian marketing venture.
X-Offender
Yeah, I know that. It's just weird.
Danny
It's related, slightly, but I wrote a piece on Rangers about marketing.

http://www.ibroxnoise.co.uk/2013/07/the-gl...st-how-big.html

You're wondering 'wtf' does this have to do with Milan and Honda. You'll figure it out if you read the piece.
X-Offender
So, his name is spelled Hondá, with accent on 'a'.

Really excited about this signing. Hopefully not another player wasted under the helm of Allegri.

Well, considering Allegri is leaving at the end of the season, I would highly doubt it.

Keisuke Honda assures he is not affected by criticism, but is progressing at Milan despite “different philosophies” with Clarence Seedorf.

The Japan international spoke to La Gazzetta dello Sport in a wide-ranging interview on his Serie A experience since arriving from CSKA Moscow on a free transfer in January.

“Criticism doesn’t please me, of course, but you are all free to write what you want. I feel that soon my first Serie A goal will arrive and it is going to be an important moment.

“I am very determined. I came here in order to become a champion with Milan. It’s a long road, but there is a great project here and the Japanese are patient people.”

Honda has been dropped occasionally by Coach Seedorf, who said he still needs to get to grips with his tactics.

“I often speak to Seedorf, as his English is excellent, so it is easy to understand each other. Above all at the beginning I didn’t understand a lot of things, so I went to his room to get into more detail.

“At the start I didn’t feel at ease on the right, but Kaka is already in the centre and he’s playing well, so I need to find my space.

“Things are going a little better compared to the first few games. Of course the centre is my home, as I love to play behind the striker, but Seedorf said I have the qualities to play on the right and players do need to adapt at times.

“We have different philosophies, but the important thing is to have a dialogue. We talk every day.”

Honda brushed off suggestions he felt there wasn’t enough enthusiasm from the fans around his arrival.

“I wasn’t the Number One in Japan or Moscow either. Football is a team sport. I like pressure and big expectations. That is my personality.

“I didn’t expect the fans to have patience: I chose the Number 10 jersey and was given a big presentation. I know people expect a lot from me, but I have faith in myself and criticism never gets me down.

“I cannot judge the atmosphere at San Siro, but I hope that if we play better then more people will come. Playing beautiful football and calling the fans to the stadium are among my ambitions.

“As for the results, none of us are satisfied, but we are working to improve constantly. I knew that I’d run into difficulties at Milan, but I chose this club because I had always dreamed of being here.”

Its not even been 3 months since he moved, it is only normal that his settling in would take time. I would wait till next season to pass judgement, as he is a good player that has experience and is a team player considering what i saw first hand against chievo. Even off the ball, his movements were good, just lacks the mutual understanding within the team.

He hasn't been fantastic so far but I'm willing to give him a full summer training with the team to see if he has the ability. I love his attitude. I think we'll continue to improve.

He came on a free, and brings in dough from a market we didn't have. He'd still be worth keeping if he sucked (he doesn't).

Word. smile.gif As long as he's good enough, he's worth keeping for that special Far East touch that he brings. I wanted us to sign this guy since, what 2007 round abouts, because I was aware what he meant for marketing. For the time being I am yet to be totally impressed, but he's carried himself rather well.

I can only imagine how hard it muse be for Honda to communicate with the other players on the pitch. Unless he's got some super secret Italian language skills that we are unaware of.

Well he speaks great English from what I can tell and I do think that most of the non-Italian players in the team plus Balo do speak English as well

Yup. He speaks to Zee, Balo and Taraabt in English, Zee of course has excellent English skills. I love Zee. He is my hero. wub.gif

There's also the small fact he conducted his press conference mostly in English.

I admit I was off-the-mark with this guy. When we signed him I thought he could really offer that much needed quality, passing and vision we lacked, but I've seen enough of him to say that he offers nothing of the such. His passing and field of vision are very limited. He can pull the simple pass or the obvious long ball, but in terms of creativity he's very, very average.

He totally reminds me of Montolivo. I thought Monto would become the brains of our midfield, but the guy is just an average CM more suited for dirty work than organizing play and making the smart pass. I suppose that's what you get from players you paid nothing for.
Fillipo Simone
Agreed.

He had a very bright 3 matches and it deluded all of us into thinking he was suddenly a sensation, but if we really nitpick those displays he didn't exactly produce dominant passing or quality assists. It shows how desperate we are for a hero that Honda with a few goals suddenly went from zero to star in our eyes. He's back to zero.

Monto's first season was rather good; while his passing was not always outstanding he did a lot of all-round work in midfield. It made him seem better than he was.

Last season was a disaster - the captaincy didn't help, as I say I think it was one of the outstanding reasons he was so poor. While I'd say 'average CM' might be harsh (I'd argue Poli's closer to that while being a decent wee player anyway) he certainly isn't anything special and he isn't going to fix our current form crisis.

On a positive note he's really good in FIFA. So's Torres. He's my Serie A top scorer after 21 games with 37 goals biggrin.gif

PS Torres is an 80 in it (I think, at least 80) so he really is extremely good no matter what difficulty setting.

If only the real one was half as good as that.

PPS: I just beat Juve 3-2 - nice revenge for the 1-0 loss earlier in the season.

I thought that was the case when you said that about Honda, I can't stand him in FIFA! So slow and bulky!

So far I'm up to World Class, haven't tried legendary

Btw, I think you guys are jumping the gun, as usual with this one, so first we all dismiss him, then he's the second coming after a couple of good games, now he's sh!t again.

The problem is that he's stuck on his wing, and there's not much he can do in terms of vision and passing when he's stuck wide and his only options are usually to pass back to Abate or cross himself.

I personally feel like he's been trying to make the best out of a bad situation through sheer hard work, but Serie A sides figure these types of players out easily, all you have to do is close him down quickly and he's out of the game on that right side, same thing with SES on the opposite side.

I'll reserve my judgment about his skill set until we see him in a position where he can utilise them, a position where he's being properly used.

Yeah he sucks in FIFA (guess that one's quite realistic). I have him as trequartista but considering a change again. Unfortunately I lost SES and De Jong through injury so I'm having to pick fucking Menez!

I think I jumped in at the deep end at professional, I'll try to win the league and see if I can upgrade after that. Or I may switch over to Pro Evo once it's out as the demo is frankly bewilderingly good IMO.

And yet, for 3 games he almost looked half decent, and we all went ballistic thinking he was Herr Christ himself, as you say, because we are so desperate for a hero, a player we can truly rely on. In those 3 games of 'decentry' he was still on the wing.

Won't happen under Pippo. With MvG leaving in January back to Chelsea Inzaghi is starting to look like he literally doesn't know what he's doing now.

No, no, no, no. Where he plays has got nothing to do with his passing and vision. I've seen him plenty of times in the centre during a game when other players were free, but he didn't have neither the intelligence nor capability to spot them and make the clever pass. He's very limited in that regard. He's a creator, but very average, like Montolivo. And the fact that they're our two most gifted midfielders says A LOT about how far we've fallen from the Pirlo and Seedorf days.
Danny
It's frustrating when you lobby for the manager to do something, or for a particular thing to happen, and keep cursing the fact it doesn't, and then it finally does and works out nothing like you hoped.

Honda in the centre is pretty much your incarnation of that, Torres so far has been mine. I truly believed he would turn himself around at Milan, but I'd say he's worse than he was at Chelsea.

I'm also sick of people 'blaming the team' for a player's failures. Milan were fairly strong before we signed Ibra, in terms of the squad, but hadn't won the league for years. Bingo, he brought class with him and elevated the club to a level it simply hadn't been without him. If 'blaming the team' was valid, the team would have dragged him down, not the other way around. Same with Suarez at Liverpool - made a mediocre team absolutely world class, and manages to drag Uruguay pretty much alone.

My point? Class shines everywhere, even if it sometimes takes a little time. Torres is no longer class, he's a washed-up wreck of a player with no confidence. Honda is average - nothing more, nothing less. I even watched him centrally for Japan at Brazil - he wasn't much better.

I want this player back! Notice his simple yet effective style of play. Nice touches, quality passing and an overall decent vision. And before someone brings up the quality of the opponent, that barely has anything to do with his playing style. Ever since Seedorf and especially now Pippo relegated him on the wing, he's become a second-rate winger who offers nothing, and tries too hard to be a kind of player he isn't.

Naah, no thanks. I need some harder proof for that theory. But I agree with you on the basic premises; Pippo shouldn't be so stubborn with his system. Trying out different things and positions shouldn't be that kind of a problem.
X-Offender
You need harder proof? How about the fact that he has played as ACM throughout his entire career? I still stand by my opinion that he's average, but he would offer much more in the center. Or at least he wouldn't be completely useless.
Fillipo Simone
Well, he isn't completely useless with us on the right as well. I really don't know, did he play ACM in Holland as well or was a winger back there?

Anyhow, I trust Clarence and his choices. He does understand how a midfield works and surely wouldn't play him out of his soft spot.

Not completely useless? OK, perhaps we have different definitions of what a useless player represents. For me it's someone who has no impact on the game, who offers little to nothing and looks like an outsider on the pitch. Honda ticks all the boxes for me in that regard.

Yes, he played as ACM at Venlo and at CSKA, and has always played as ACM for Japan. He's even played as CM in some occasions. But regardless of that, it's very easy to see that he's out of depth on the wing. At least give him a good run of games as ACM and see what he can offer.

You haven't played well since you arrived, son, 3 games earlier this season aside. We were duped into thinking you were the Second Coming of Christ, but in reality you're a flop.

If we can dupe someone else into paying good money for him to take this waster off our hands, great. I stand by the marketing thing - he's got massive value as a marketing tool, and if we can sell that side of things, of a player who can make a club big in Japan and Asia as a whole, then excellent. But as a player he's just horrible.

He and Torres have been excruciating disappointments. Torres gets '1' for effort, Honda gets '2' for a few nice goals.
