Toni: I signed for Milan
Friday 4 January, 2008

Azzurri striking star Luca Toni has revealed that he put pen to paper with Milan last summer before joining Bayern Munich.

The towering 31-year-old left Fiorentina for the Bundesliga for around £7m, but he had been contacted by a number of Serie A clubs during his time in Tuscany.

While interest from Inter and Juventus never developed into concrete offers, it now seems that Toni had practically signed for the world champions.

“Everyone knows that I nearly joined Inter two years ago and that Juventus were interested in signing me,” the ex-Brescia man told Il Giornale.

“However, with Milan it went a lot further – I had already signed a contract. I could also have been a Roma player as they nearly signed me when I was playing for Cisco Roma.”

Toni has impressed in the Bundesliga, despite Bayern’s recent woes, but he is still following Serie A with interest.

“Inter are the strongest side and they have a bit more than Roma and Milan,” he stated.

“The Nerazzurri are certainly a better side than the Rossoneri and it isn’t just the derby that shows us that.”

The Modena native’s thoughts then turned to Euro 2008 and Italy’s Group of death with France, Holland and Romania.

“I’m raring to go, but we can feel the responsibility on our shoulders,” he explained.

“It’s not a Group of iron as much as a Group of steel and we can get through. The important thing is to get to the game against France with qualification already assured.”

Toni concluded by giving the peninsula’s giants his tip for the winter transfer window.

“Sign Diego from Werder Bremen,” he commanded. “He is a very, very good player and one of the few fantasistas still around who can decide a game.”

Gila has nothing to do with this. Even with Gila we were still short on strikers. Calling Seedorf and Kaka strikers should be enough of a sign of how desperate we are in that department rolleyes.gif

Taking words at face-value "Seedorf and Kaka strikers" as Galliani has stated over and over rolleyes.gif . He is responsible for this squad and if he said something of the sorts, then he said it for a reason, and not just for 'us' to make a joke out of him wink.gif

Gila has nothing to do with this ?! Are you sure ? I mean, had Toni actually transfered into Milan, Gilardino would be playing coppa Italia games with the performance that he has been putting in !!
Maybe this is my assessment of him and Carlo sees it differently, but fact remains that had Toni came to Milan, Gilardino would have no room.

Of course no one is going to take it seriously when you keep trying to feed people and fans bullsh!t when you promised in the summer that changes to the squad will be made and more quality will be brought in.

Gila and Toni played great together for Italy under Lippi. No reason why they can't do it at Milan also. Yes they are both basically the same type of player but Toni can play out of the box more and Gila has enough technical ability to provide assists. But not when the other player is Pippo and the both keep getting in each other's way.

A big example of this was the friendly game against Germany, Gila and Toni combined for 3 goals. Also Gila played great with Sheva and Kaka in his first season and he was part of the best attack in Europe at the time with the ammount of goals him and the other 2 scored
Rossoneri7
So Galliani said Seedorf and Kaka were strikers so everyone can stop getting on his back about us not having sufficient strikers ?!

But do u think Galliani cares about what the on-lookers think ? As long as Milan is winning and bringing in trophies, I doubt he cares about what we think.

He doesn't even need to say anything .. I mean, there are several issues that he has yet to comment on, and he didn't up till now.

Give him the benefit of the doubt, for a change, cuz it is people like him that keep this team united. And it is not like he could predict Ronaldo was gonna be injured for half a season rolleyes.gif

On the Toni&Gila
Well, Italia plays differently than Milan .. I mean, if we were gonna go with that and take it as simply as it is seen then Pirlo should play up field where he is even more effective. And Gattuso should play on the left than on the right. hehe Nesta should retiere tongue.gif .... Basically what I am saying is, Lippi's formation was different than Ancelotti's ... As well as their tactics, thus we cant draw conclusions 'as-is'

It's not about giving him the benefit of the doubt, it's about the fact that in the summer the fans were promised quality signings, and apart from Pato who is still unproven there weren't any quality signings made.

And yes he does care, when the media keep asking him about it or the ultras show their dislike in the transfers by staging protests, it effects him. Why else would he call a player like Seedorf a forward??? Going out in Serie A and CL matches with 2 regular team strikers and a primavera player to make up our attack is why he comes up with stuff like we have 5 strikers, Gila, Pippo, R9, Seedorf and Kaka. rolleyes.gif

If we had more then 2 strikers called up in every game, he would never mention Seedorf or Kaka as strikers. Now you may believe he has some alternative reason to this but I can't see what that could be. He just doesn't want to edmit that he has been proven wrong and that Milan DO need changes and top quality players to be brought in

I don't think it has anything to do with the formation, some players have chemistry while playing with each other, some don't. Ur missing the point han, we all know the team is lacking something. It isn't a mystery that we at Milanfan figured out, and above all the board were the first to know of it!

But seeing as they are in charge and responsible for this group of players and this team ... Then i give Adriano Galliani the benefit of the doubt. Now, regarding the statement that he made on more than one occasion about Seedorf and Kaka being strikers, well why cant it be that he was being sarcastic in responding to a wise-guy reporter ?! or to keep the team spirit up, since Ronaldo has been out for so long that it was getting to the team ?! or that he was joking around and the media made it look like an actual statement ?! or for any random reason that might truly be the cause of why he stated that Seedorf and Kaka were regarded as strikers!

Honestly now, a Professor in the stature of Adriano Galliani has been made into a laughing stock (which i really dont care much about, but ..) .. its immature when you actually think about it. Seeing as he has been the General manager of this team for so long that he knows more than all of us put together on how this game is played and what this team needs.

Its not chemistry han .. I doubt Toni and Gila (together) would thrive under Calro's tactics. Their game plan is too different.

Definitely not together !!

Shevchenko ? Its a matter of tactics han. At Milan, the whole team used to play around Shevchenko. At Chelsea, its a whole different ball game ..

If you want to believe that he was only stating that as a joke or to keep the team spirits up then I'm not going to argue with you on it, it's your oppinion. But if that was the case, why woud they list Kaka on the official site as a striker when he's always been listed as a midfielder.

As for the board knowing that the team is lacking something, then why haven't they made any move to actually do something about that fact and fix the problems we have. I'm sorry but our board has to be criticised on some things of late.

And yes Galliani is part of the reason for our success, but sometimes you have to question what he does.

Exactly what I said in the other thread, for Gila to effective he needs to play alongside a SS. But I still think he would play well with Toni in a 2 striker system with Kaka behind them. Toni isn't just a typical box striker, he's no Ronaldo but he does have that something extra compared to players like Gila and Pippo

I do get what You're saying, that's why I said I would leave you to your own oppinion. But Galliani has shot his own foot on more then one occasion, and you can't deny that. Yes sometimes you have to give him the benefit of the doubt on certain things. But the whole Kaka and Seedorf are our forwards is pushing it.

He has made some amazing buys like Pirlo and Seedorf, and people questioned them also becuase he haggled on both players and got them for practically nothing, and that worked out for him. But other times like the Amoroso and Vieri incidents happened also. You can't deny that.

Galliani has brought all the criticism he is recieving an to himself.

Sheva at Chelsea has a lot of reasons why it never worked

1. English football ruins players like Sheva. The only team I could see a player like Sheva thriving at is Arsenal

2. At Milan the team played for him, at Chelsea he barely gets a start, let alone a system that is based around him

3. He never really clicked with Drogba

4. Chelsea's rigid system that doesn't complement Sheva's game in the least

These ar all things we've agreed on on more then one occasion. And you've also mentioned these things. But I still think that Kaka and Sheva would play well under any system or formation.
Rossoneri7
I am not defending Galliani, nor am I his spokes person ... All I'm saying is, he has done more good for Milan than he has done bad. We are all human and can all make mistakes. Being criticized of those mistakes is something normal and it happens in any profession.

In this case in particular, we cant say 'he added Clarence and Ricky as Milan striker to cover up his mistakes of not signing any strikers' ... Why ? Because we have no proof !! What he said was his opinion/his remark to a wise-guy journalist/etc etc .. we really don't have a hard fact to criticize upon!

He has brought all this criticism to himself ?! Alright, criticize him .. But little will it do to change things wink.gif

Stop wasting your time arguing what type of player would suit Gila, or what formation he needs. No matter who he plays with, or what formation, he would remain the same average, can't-control-or-pass-the ball gila. He's poor. He should be playing for the likes of cagliari, not Milan.

For Gila to actually do something he needs someone that could give him support, it's not wasting time to discuss who would suite his qualities best. We saw how well he played with Sheva and how poor he plays with Pippo.

Imo it's very important to have 2 strikers that can play well together. Discussing if Toni could be that is not wasting time.

Kaka was still playing next to Seedorf as an attacking midfielder in the system. On the UEFA site he was also listed as a midfielder last season so I don't understand why they gave him the best striker award. Maybe because he scored more then any other forward in the competition?

But he was never playing as a striker.

Compared to Pippo even my kid sister has more technical ability  wink.gif

When Gila plays he offers much more to the game, he holds up the ball much better for Kaka and Seedorf and links up much better with them.

But on the serious side, it's not cr@p, it's facts, numbers don't lie. And Gila's numbers have been much better then Pippo's.

And I didn't say Gila holds the ball better, I said he holds it up much better then Pippo. When Gila plays as the lone striker the mids get more involved because he better at holding the ball up and laying it off to the on coming mids. He does it much better then Pippo

And I don't know what goals you're talikg about since its been more then a year since Pippo scored in the league, where we need goals more then anything

He's a striker and he should score , thats his job . Book closed.

And besides , what goals did Gila score ? At least Inzaghi's goals won us Cups . Gila's goals come when were winning 3-0 , bravo Gila , bravo king.gif

Comparing Gila (25) now to 34 years old Pippo is no brainer, but still Pippo is picked and delivers in the important games. Compare 25 Gila to 25 Pippo and you see the real difference between them.

Yes his goals won us the CL last season, but you can't forget that Kaka was the one that practically dragged us through the whole thing not Pippo.

But Pippo scores ! What are you talking about ? Im not only talking about serie A mate .
Fillipo Simone
I've been trying to stay out of discussion as long as possible but,...

Pippo and Gila should not be compared. Those are two characters, two different type of players.

Pippo shouldn't be criticized at all IMO. He's a 35 year old striker who did everything right in his career. He's Italy's top scorer in European competitions (CL) and he's nothing to proof. IMO we should be happy that he plays with us.

The fact that he didn't score against Lecce, Messina, or whatever team in the Serie A is not his problem and it isn't up to him. After his big injury we all considered him gone, but he came back and scored 2 in Athens. That's what matters. To score against Messina, sure, why not,..but it should not be up to him. All the pressure should be set on a new striker, someone who can handle that pressure. That means not Pato, and obviously not Gilardino.

I treat both Ronaldo and Pippo as bonus players. We cannot expect from them to be our leading attackers, they should represent that X-factor.

As for Gilardino. On one side we have the obvious stats, that tell us he's our best striker for the last 2 years (without Andrej). On the other side, Pippo can play 5 matches without scoring in a row, but steps out in Athens and makes the 2 crucial goals and a day to remember. Which Gila day can we remember? Which match? For me,..there is a blank field. Another problem is that Gila does not show any improvement, or any particular situation which he can handle. As a sub he's pretty useless, except when we allready have the lead and only make a refreshemnt-sub (ManUtd. game). If he plays deeper in our field he's to far away to score and surrounded by defenders, if he play up front he's stuck and stays frozen. If he get's a chance, the odd's are in favour that he'll miss.

But, the thing is Gilardino has only 26 years. So, there is still time for him to shine. If he can accept his position on the bench, that's great. I presonally have faith in him, still. I saw him play for Parma more then once and I know that he can do it. I'd suggest that we bring up a new striker who could suit to Gila's characteristic's. Or we loan him out for one season and see if he can do it still, under different circumstances.

Pippo hasn't hit the heigths in the CL either, atleast not since the 05/06 season, where he was the REAL reason why we got as far as we did

But still, why would we need a striker that doesn't score in Serie A? that's what I'm trying to say. Pippo hasn't been effective in Serie A for a long time now. And that is the competition that we suffer the most in in terms of goals.

Has the Serie A been devalued this much that we don't care if we have strikers that are able to score in it now? unsure.gif

O.k, but you can't expect from Pippo at this age to score regularly in Serie A. He doesn't have the legs anymore to play too many games, so he's mostly here,at this stage of his career, for the big games. The mistake was not buying another striker while taking to consideration Pippo's age, Ronalo's injuries, half season unavailability of Pato and inconsistency of Gila.

Yes and I agree with all of that. But why does a striker that isn't even half what he used to be stay on and play when he's not being of use to the club in a certain competition.

Now lets leave Gila out of this. If Pippo doesn't retire by the end of this season he will most likely be out for the rest of next season through injury or won't live up to his standards because by then he would be 36 and not as half as effective as we all know him to be.

Imo a great player should retire at his heights and Pippo is well past that. He should bow down gracefully.

And plaese don't get Gila involved, even though I do defend him at times when he plays badly I criticise him. It's not rose tinted glasses I'm just saying give the guy a chance because he's shown us glimpses and if he could ever return to his own then he would be great for us.

If the club affords to keep players like Pippo and Ronaldo who will most likely be out for 3/4 of the season then there is no reason for us to complain about giving Gila chances.

Or even worse, stay behind Dida who's mistakes cost us match after match and not support Gila

But when the club don't make transfers that will give us other options then Pippo is required to score, especially when he is one of the only 2 strikers that the club has on it's roster. Yes it's unfair to Pippo but that's the way it is atm. Hopefully with Pato this will ease off some pressure from the entire attack (Kaka and Seedorf included who are expected to score goals like they are seasoned poachers rolleyes.gif )

I agree with you, mostly.

I'm a Gila defender and I respect him, and I also, just like you, criticise him.

But to compare Pippo and Ronaldo is also wrong. Pippo is fit and Ronaldo has a recurring problem that makes him out for months.

Milan, as it seems has a policy that is different to the Juve policy. We keep our players even after they are past or behind their best cause we have a unique team and cohesion. Everything you said about Pippo could also go on Maldini, or Cafu, or,...they all could have retired on star highs. But, if Pippo says I'll stay for one more, I won't be against it. I'll respect his decision, cause for all that he has done for us in the past, he deserved that respect and such a solution.

It's simple:

1) I don't wan't certain players to retire, I just want new players join (as soon as possible)
2) I stay behind every Milan player from the starting 11, even behind Dida cause I respect them all. But that does not mean that I'm not critical when needed
