To talk about the game (this IS a match thread), I didn't pick up a whole lot of note in my brief skimming of the news conferences on acmilan.com's italian pages. Carletto /did/ say that he wasn't sure /how long/ Ronie would play though, so that's a hint that he will play some time. Also, the player who spoke along with Carletto was Kaladze. Could be because he used to play in the Ukraine. But usually, the player who does the pregame press conference also starts so....*passes the vodka bottle to dst* looks like Kaladze will be somewhere in defense.

Either that or say something nice about Dida.. She can't resist that.

Hi! This is the Shakhtar-Milan match thread! In between the bickering (and yes, I know I'm as bad as anyone else this time) I'd like to discuss the match.

Given what Carletto said in his press conference (link), I'm going to guess that the lineup will look something like this:

Dida
Oddo Nesta Kaladze/Maldini Kaladze/Serginho
Gattuso Pirlo Ambrosini
Kaka Seedorf
Gilardino
(if Carletto is feeling conservative against a very physical team away)

OR something like this:

Dida
Oddo Nesta Maldini/Kaladze Kaladze/Serginho
Gattuso Pirlo Seedorf
Kaka
Gilardino Ronaldo
(if Carletto is feeling a little adventurous and if Ronnie is somewhere approaching match fit)

I don't think this will be an easy game. Shakhtar are no pushovers and they're very strong at home. I'd prefer a win but I'd be perfectly happy with a draw.

hmm lemme see, if pointing out certain flaws, different ways too improve the team is considred bashing then i'm guilty, or maybe your just overly sensitive. after all who was right when some of us saw this coming? i mean it's just great using such strong term freely especially when it's completely unjustified.

Seems like Ronaldo has a lot of desire to play. He doesn't need to prove anything to anyone, but he could easily get injured again, which is not reassuring.

And on Gila, I think he is a bit tired. He has been playing a lot lately and he has a tendency to disappear toward the end of every game. I still think Gila - Ronnie can be very useful but the real satisfaction will come after January with Pato and Ronnie playing together. They'll help us tear down defenses especially when you consider we don't have the fastest full backs in the world.

For this game, I want a win, of course. Doesn't matter how long Ronnie plays, as long as he gets more match fit and doesn't get injured. But I wouldn't be surprised to see a moment of brilliant magic.

My guess is Gila will start and Ronaldo will be brought on with 30 minutes left... but who knows, maybe R9 from the start

Shakhtar Boss: We'll Defend Hard Against Milan

Shakhtar Donestk coach Mircea Lucescu has warned fans not to expect any repeat of the 4-1 thriller at the San Siro as his side prepare to welcome AC Milan to Ukraine...

Shakhtar coach Mircea Lucescu has informed AC Milan that his side will defend heavily for the visit of the Italian giants.

"From the outset, we'll be much more careful than we were there," he said.

"We will not attempt to replicate Celtic's approach against the Italians."

I just checked the Gazzetta online edition and they don't seem to have a guess at probable lineups.

Goal is predicting the following lineup: Dida; Oddo, Nesta, Kaladze, Maldini; Gattuso, Pirlo, Ambrosini; Kakà, Seedorf; Gilardino

I suspect they may be mostly right, though it may be Pippo instead of Gila. Much as I'd like to see a 4-3-1-2, I think it'll stay a Christmas Tree formation, with Ronaldo coming on partway through the second half.

We need the CL form Milan (dr jekyll) to beat them in Donetsk (BTW I was born near Donetsk ). The fans are pushing them there and they are playing very tough and confident. Add to that that their have also a good technical abilities and their know that a win today would put them very close to qualify to the 1/8 for the first time ever. Our league form (mr hyde), surely, won't be enough.

Makes sense, no point pushing a just fit Ronnie into shark infested waters. Otherwise it's our strongest line up.

It's o.k. The only thing I would change is Paolo instead Kaladze. Oddo obviously isn't ft to satrt so Bonera will give us more defence at RB and I prefer him over Cafu at this point.
