Wow... Some dramatic emotions are boiling inside of me right now... I didn't know this was gonna hit me so hard. I'm so thankful to him. When people like Maldini, Costacurta and Nesta were on the pitch, it was never about the numbers or the technical stuff for me, it was all about the SHOWDOWN. These guys provided us with such feelings that will surely go down in the history of this sport as something truly unique. If aliens decided to show up here, and wanted to understand what defending is all about in football, I would point at Nesta and say: ---> This. This guy is defending. He is the best Center Back the world has ever seen. Something that the John Terrys, Vidices and Thiag Silva's of now can't even comprehend.

Goodbye good sir and good luck in everything you do!

Nesta maybe leaving, but I sure am glad you are back, Max. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/king.gif) There are times when one gets a chance to read the exact very words that the heart desires. The above two paragraphs are exactly that. Saved me a whole lot of typing, and filled my heart with a magic feeling - fuzz, in other words, meaning we're even in the fuzzy department.

There never will be another Nesta, and I'm so glad I was there to see the only one! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif) So long, Sandro.

What he says there at the end makes me feel like I'm 50. I don't like the Milan of Ibras and Boatengs and Muntari's all that much to be honest. And if I don't follow Milan then I don't follow football... Shame, it used to be such a great sport.

Thank you (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

And yeah, we might not have been born in Italy during the Renaissance era, but we got to experience something special all in itself by witnessing these footballing greats!

Well said. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif) These have been a great 10 years, watching once in a lifetime player like Alessandro Nesta.

We have to be grateful to have lived in an era where we got to see the best of all the football powerhouses except probably Germany. From Ayala to Zidane....we got to see them all at their best. The great Italy of '06, Brazil of '98 and '02 and the rise of the Spanish giants!!!

For me Nesta's departure is the end of an era where these classical defenders of old struck fear into many an attacker. Thiago Silva is the only one that deserves to take up the mantle of "the best" after him. I'd be very hard pressed to find another of his era of similar stature...only Puyol who was less of a defender but more charismatic and offered a bit more in attack.

The defensive greats of the second decade of this millenium are laughable in comparison.....with guys like Ferdinand, Vidic, Pique and Terry considered elite is there any wonder why guys like Rooney, CR7 and Messi are setting scoring records everywhere?

It's always sad to see legends leave/retire. Nesta wasn't the first and won't be the last.

Thanks for everything, Sandro. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/king.gif)

Reasonable sentiment and all but for me Maldini and Nesta were the best defenders I have ever seen and Ronaldo is the best forward....sentimental fool that I am (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Nesta was a magnificent defender but I can't agree he's the greatest ever. Baresi? Maldini?

He doesn't feel as if his body is still capable of playing such high level football

You mean he's leaving Serie A entirely? That would be fair enough then I guess.

Ronaldo was frightening tbh. His career stats are insane. We saw a glimpse of his best when he was here. Fantastic stuff.

Yep, going to the MLS, New York being the most likely destination

If you are a sentimental fool, then I am a sentimental-er fool. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif) They never made them as good as Maldini and Ronaldo, this much I can bet my life on. These guys make up the first 2 of my Top 5 of all time.

Here as in AC Milan, or with Inter? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif) If the former, then I was the happiest person on earth while he was here for a short time playing in our colors, and if the later, then there was no one better than Ronaldo in the world, while he played for Inter. Lucky is the city where two of the best players of all time plied their trade for so long.

Maybe, maybe not. It was a privilege watching him. My father knew Milan fans who waited 20 years for someone like Baresi to appear. Even Collovati wasn't that good. We were privileged to witness this great run which sadly ends with Nesta.

Please don't hate me, but I always preferred Nesta to Maldini.
