QUOTE
Retirement is not an option

AC Milan defender Alessandro Nesta insists he has no immediate plans to retire.

The 35-year-old stopper has been tipped to quit in 2012, when his current contract at San Siro expires. However, the former Lazio man feels he still has plenty to offer Milan.

"I want to carry on playing football for as long as possible," Nesta is quoted as saying by Milannews.it.

"I want to put off retirement, but I can see my future still being in football, although I don't know in what capacity."

Thiago Silva is seen as the heir to Nesta, and the Italian believes his teammate will be able to fill his boots well.

"The best defender in the world, Thiago Silva, has stayed with us, so we are fine in defense," he concluded.

Milan take on Inter in the Supercoppa Italiana on Saturday.

I hope he gets the timing right. At the moment he's still playing well and he has no need to retire, but I hope he doesn't put it off to the point where he's declined so much in his last season that it becomes hard to watch him. Maldini was a little like that.

Maldini was actually needed until his last day. Mostly because our defense being awful back then. So I disagree. When he retired he was missed a lot.

I agree. In fact he played very well in his last season, one of the best defenders in Italy.

Maldini was a little like that.

Little in the littlest sense of the word, in my opinion. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/innocent.gif) Just like said above, Maldini was absolutely vital for the last few seasons (with our defense usually depleted due to injuries, Nesta was in Florida at that time). In the 2007 CL win he won the best defender award, and in his last season was as epic as they came - at least players of his age came.

Sure there were the odd moments where he was beaten for pace, but who isn't?

I know, and I respect that. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) But it's hard to deny what our defense would have looked like without Paolo in 2007, 08, and 09. They'd have run riots the way we played our game back then, the state of our DMs, and whatnot. If anything, I knew Paolo could have played another 2 years at the top level, maybe not as a direct starter, but a super sub.

I am of the firm believe that not every Tom, Deck, and Harry should play till ~40, most just can't keep up.

Or rather, we didn't sign new defenders because we had Maldini.
