Manchester City's Wage Bill Tops £100m - Report

Reports from the UK state that Manchester City's newest arrivals have pushed the club's wage bill past £100 million per year.

This summer alone, the Citizens have signed Emmanuel Adebayor, Carlos Tevez (both on £150,000 per week), Kolo Toure and Gareth Barry (both on £120,000).

Add that to the £160,000 that Robinho rakes in every week, and you have what the News of the World claims are record-breaking salary figures.

If the tabloid's calculations are correct, then that means City have doubled their wage bill in the space of two years. It also means that the club's expenditure on pay cheques is greater than their yearly income of £90m.

City's Arab owners, Abu Dhabi United Group, have put almost £1 billion into the club since buying out Thaksin Shinawatra last year.

After the club's defeat in the Peace Cup final against Aston Villa, the David Trezeguet admitted that he could not turn his back on Juventus ahead of a promising season.

"I will remain 100 per cent with Juventus for the whole season," he told the club's official website.

"After nearly ten years in Turin, it did not seem right to me to go just now. I was helped to make this decision by everyone who has been close to me recently: the management; the coach; my team-mates; and the fans."

Ciro Ferrara explained that the decision came in the wake of the Bianconeri's defeat last night.

"I am happy for David, as at the end of the game he wanted to talk to me and the team, announcing that he intends to stay with us," the manager revealed.

An injury had ruled Trezeguet out for much of last season and he was unable to replicate his previous form in the Bianconeri shirt, but is hoping for a trouble-free season next year under Ferrara.

The 31-year-old striker had been strongly linked with a transfer away from the club this summer, most notably to Milan.

Milan have turned their attention to Roma striker Julio Baptista, who they see as an alternative to Sevilla's Luis Fabiano.

The Rossoneri's striker search is still ongoing. Reports in Italy and Spain claim Ernesto Bronzetti has been sent to Seville for one final attempt at the 2009 Confederations Cup top scorer. However, if that fails, Baptista will be the next target.

Il Corriere Dello Sport claims the former Real Madrid man is being targeted by Milan. The San Siro-based giants have already made contact over his availability, but no official offer has been made.

'The Beast' represents a more affordable option for Milan than Luis Fabiano, with voices around Trigoria claiming that he could join them for around €9 million, which is around half of what Sevilla are asking for Fabiano. However, Baptista has claimed he is in no mood to leave Roma, a statement backed up by his agent on Saturday.

On the other hand, the capital club are willing to cash in on him and are open to offers. As part of a possible deal, Milan will offer money plus the services of highly-rated midfielder Ignazio Abate.

Milan ace Andrea Pirlo is in no mood to answer questions surrounding his Chelsea-linked future.

The Italian midfielder is being chased by former Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti. Reports suggest an offer from the Blues was made, but rejected.

Ancelotti revealed on Saturday that his pursuit for the midfielder is yet to make further ground, and Pirlo's silence appears to back that claim.

"Chelsea? I have nothing to say. I will speak further down the line," Pirlo told Il Corriere Dello Sport.

Just 48 hours earlier, Ancelotti said, "At the moment Pirlo is a Milan player and so there is no news."

Fresh reports in England this morning claim Chelsea have €117million to spend on luring Atletico Madrid's Sergio Aguero, Bayern Munich's Franck Ribery, and Pirlo.

Earlier voices suggested Milan rebuffed Chelsea's initial €8m plus Claudio Pizarro bid.

Don’t Write Milan Out Of The Scudetto Race - Fedele Confalonieri


Silvio Berlusconi's right-hand man, Fedele Confalonieri, believes the Milan squad is good enough to challenge for major honours, despite a lamentable pre-season.

Confalonieri, who is chairman of Mediaset - the company owned and controlled by Berlusconi - feels the Rossoneri are in good shape for a decent campaign. The Italian dignitary is confident Adriano Galliani and Berlusconi will steer the club in the right direction, despite a storm of criticism regarding the club's transfer strategies this summer.

"Milan are not to be thrown away," Confalonieri told Il Corriere Della Sera.

"Berlusconi and Galliani are not out of their heads. They deserve respect and trust. They have given much to Italian football."

The media mogul couldn't help but take a swipe at bitter city rivals Inter, and he has defended the sale of Kaka.

"We have more money compared to Inter and we have more desire to spend. Of their four Scudetti, two of them were gifted," added Confalonieri.

"Kaka? He is a great player. He likes [money] and he has gone to Madrid to get more of it. Kaka is no saint, and Berlusconi is no monster."

If one were to look for the source of some of the stories reported with varying accuracy on the website I refuse to visit, one would find that the Fabiano story comes from the Turin paper (Juve's pet paper) and the Baptista story comes from the Rome paper (Roma's pet paper). Therefore, one might conclude that neither is particularly reliable or useful.

I see it as "double productive" (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) Because it gives power to the reader to use his or her analytical skills to make their own opinion rather than accept one from a filtered source.

Fishdoll doesn't feel the need to blindly post every single bit of news related to Milan without any indication of its reliability. He also doesn't particularly CARE whether or not he (or his person) are seen as the news experts. He and his person feel themselves relatively well informed from the sources they use (which do not include goal.com, tuttosport, or corriere): Mediaset, milannews, gazzetta, etc.

And one bit of news that's reliable: Rino is quoted in today's Gazzetta as saying that he's sure there will be reinforcements and that he quite likes Huntelaar.
