I still keep hoping forlornly that Cobolli Gigli and Secco have a massive brain freeze and we can grab Chiellini, but sadly I don't think that's going to happen.
Wouldn't mind Zapata.

Interesting new rumor this morning. Apparently Braida is in Germany today to watch the Cottbus-Stuttgart game. He's apparently interested in observing Stuttgart's Serdar Tasci. Tasci is a defender (usually plays CB but sometimes as RB) who's played for the U21s and who has also gotten a few call ups for the senior NT.

Seriously, I don't remember many great German defenders... (IMG: style_emoticons/default/mad.gif) (IMG: style_emoticons/default/mad.gif) (IMG: style_emoticons/default/mad.gif) Brehme, Kohler, Buchwald, Berthold, Schwarzenbeck, Beckenbauer, Förster, Briegel, Sammer, Eilts, Breitner, Vogts....oh yes, they were all useless.

QUOTE (Astafjevs @ Dec 6 2008, 05:33 PM) Central defenders. Breitner and Brehme were full-backs.
The most recent on that list was Sammer/Kohler. So we're talking around 10 years ago. When was the last time a top German defender was produced? Matthäus was played in defence towards the end of his career, but only because he was too old to go in midfield.
At the moment the first choice is any two from Mertesacker, Metzelder, Westermann (also a left-back) and Tasci. Not the best advert for German defenders. So were Briegel and Vogts. But no one said anything about central defenders. Plus, you said you wouldn't remember many great German defenders. So I mentioned some. And yes, we had some problems to produce solid CB since the era of Kohler and Sammer. But Mertesacker is OK and Tasci has some talent (but at this point he's definitely no improvement for Milan). Plus, there are some more talented kids who's names will be more famous soon like Commper, Hummels or Jaissle.

Seriously, I don't remember many great German defenders... Not true really. Like LaPalma said. I'd add Markus Babbel, Christian Wörns, Thomas Linke, Olaf Thon or Stefan Reuter (also DM) as some recent-active players (wan't Jörg Henirich also a CB and a DM?). I agree, nowdays a gap happened. But that's just normal. For the next WC there could merge some new potential stars. In fact, the best alltime defenders from Europe IMO come from Italy and Germany (in that order). Germany had, since 1998 many problems in the attack. Even in 2002, when they scored 8 goals against the Saudi's they didn't convince totally. Rudi Völler tried many things, but...at that time a striker gap happened. Bobic, Kirsten, Bierhoff, Jancker and some others were near their retirement and youngsters were hardly found, exemptional was Lukas Podolski. And look now! Isn't Germany really good covered in that departement? Just in a few years everything changed and now Jogi can afford the luxury of throwing out Kuranyi (who I honestly dislike). So, I'm very optimistic when it comes to German defenders.

I know some of the guys here would be thrilled...
I'd go for it. He deserves a thicker Milan-record.
