undefined American Style Playoffs For Serie A?undefined

The President of Lega Calcio, Antonio Matarrese stated that he would be in favour of introducing these new rules to generate new income and also add more interest to the season.

With Inter already almost certain of winning the league title, with more than half of the season still to be played, the Lega are trying to come up with ideas to make future leagues more interesting, especially for the title race.

The most accredited idea seems that of introducing the American style playoff and decreasing the number of Serie A teams to either 16 or 18, with two relegations instead of the current three.

The first eight would then face each other in direct clashes, starting from the quarter finals, and the final winner would take home the Scudetto. This would also be valid for the relegation issue with the last eight facing each other out.

To compare: In America's top-flight, MLS, presently the top eight teams at the end of the regular season qualify for the MLS Cup playoffs.

I am a huge NBA fan but I don't think the playoff system should be used here. It's more fair with the current system cuz that way the champion is the team that was better during almost the entire season, and not the team that is in better shape in closing stages of year.

Me too ...

I'm with misha on this one .. Plus we play CL .. So it would mean that we will be at a disadvantage when teams from EPL, etc etc play us.

Was going to answer to Warchant but you took the words rtight out of my mind.

There is the CL to see who is better in head to heads. The league is to see who is the most consistant team over the course of a whole year.

but what if there are 2 or 3 teams that are strong all year and the first place team wins by 1 or 2 points and only beats 3rd place by 3 or 4 points...how does this make them a "stronger" team than the ones they barely defeated?

note: i'm not saying this would even work in serie a...but from every sport i've ever watched...a playoff system is the only true way to name a #1, plus it gives more teams than just the most powerful ones a chance at the title.

the WORST idea ever !!!!!
even the 8th team with a bit of luck can become a champion.
Imagine Ascoli to represent Italy in CH.L. as a champion - terrible.

But what if the team in first place is something like 13 points infront of the team in second, and then just has a bad night in a knock out game.

I wouldn't consider this fair for the team that has worked hard all season to accumalate all those points and then lose it all just because of one bad game
