Milan's midfield, i.e. its engine room was completely changed. The only real test they were put against was Torino, Bologna and a crippled Roma.

inter however have been playing for several seasons. You can't expect the same cohesion.

Yes Milan plays sexy football, but inter plays a solid brand.

Sad but true.

I think we had one of the hardest starts. We played better teams than Inter in fact, and we looked good against all of them

For me, it's not about the midfield as a unit, it's about the whole collative and how Pioli sets up the team and each time we repeat the same exact mistakes

Concede early
Try to chase the game like demented chickens
Lose the ball in stupid positions
Get countered
Concede
Rinse and repeat

How Pioli can get smoked by Inzaghi 5 games in a row, when you know how they will play each time is beyond me. It's always the same move.

WE push up our defence too high and get too tight on Lautaro Dzeko/Thuram, they feed the ball to the on coming wingback, we lose their midfield runners, their wingback buts it back, Goal.

My god! Even someone who has no clue about football can see what is wrong there.

Look, I'm not going to lose my sh!t about Pioli and demand he be sacked like what is going on on Twitter right now. It would be stupid to fire him now. We have a grueling month ahead of us. And changing coach now would be stupid. I said from the beginning that he should not have stayed after last season. But now that the season is underway, he has to stay. I think we'll bounce back from this. Inter are just better and Inzaghi has Pioli on a leash. We'll do well against most teams in the league and should also do well in the CL imo.

So sacking him now, no matter how humiliating it's been against Inter all year, is a no-go

Also, I'm a bit zen about this loss because I knew we were not going to win. Of course the nature of it p!sses me off, but it's pointless to get overly emotional about it at this point. We have a game in 3 days and we need to win that if we want to advance in the CL group.

The midfield is what connects the defense and offense. That is what I was referring to.

On paper Milan seem to match inter in all areas of the park. But when the game is underway, its a whole different world. Maybe after 6 months this team will finally be at its stride. But as of now, I'm dreading Newcastle too (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

My point is that it only looked bad against Inter so far this season. Why? Because Pioli has no answer to Inzaghi's system imo

Last season we had a midfield that has played with each other for a while and we still got smoked in all the games we played bar one of them. We simply walk into the same traps every time.

Like I said, I think we'll do well in most games, but this Inter team is our Achilles heal imo.

I'm mostly worried about Newcastle now because a defeat like this is demoralizing. We just need to get back up and dust this game off. Quick. We can't take it with us into these coming games.

Aside from that I'm not worried about our midfield. We have quality and we'll win most matches imo. But mentally this will sting. Last season we went into a spiral. And it has lead to this. Before that we had the upper hand on Inzaghi's Inter. And had not lost to them once. But ever since we started that spiral last January and lost to them in the Super Cup we've completely capitulated to them. It's mental as well as tactical.

As long as I see a fired up team that wins next Tuesday I won't worry. If we start to see a downward trend because of this game, some red lights need to start flashing.

This is what you get for relying on Krunic as your DM btw. Completely exposed at the back all game long

And you also don't play with inverted FBs against such a wing-heavy side like Inter

Pioli man...

Are you seriously going to blame Krunic for everything bad that happens with this team? We would have been buttfucked even if we were playing Rodri in that role.

This game was a repeat of every derby that we have played this year. 5 games, 5 defeats. It doesn't matter if we change the whole formation, with Pioli in charge we'll never win any of these games. What an incompetent, inept coach! Been in charge of this team for four years and still doesn't know how to play these games.

The 5-1 is shameful, a result that will be remembered for long. But I knew it was going to end badly the moment Inter scored their first. We play such an ugly football, I just can't. Slow, clueless, gutless. No pride, no humility, nothing. Just soulless players and an oblivious coach.

Even when we were supposedly being the better side in those minutes in the first half, it was only cos Inter let us. But what is there to say for a team that holds almost 70% of the ball and creates absolutely nothing? Such a sterile possession. I said it a few days ago, those numbers are mostly inflated by the ridiculous passing between Maignan and the defence. Whenever we try to create something upfront, we lose the ball within 3-4 touches.

It's Sunday league football, guys. There is nothing else to say. Pioli needs to be fired. Point.

I am not just blaming Krunic, but he is an obvious weak point in the midfield. Reijnders and RLC are both more adapt going forward rather than tracking back. The DM should be a specialist capable of shielding the defence. I have actually praised him a lot recently, but it is obvious that against teams like Inter our midfield will struggle without someone who can hold it down.

There were points during the match yesterday where our midfield was a giant hole for Inter to run into. And while I think that is more down to Pioli's idiotic approach. Having an actual DM would have helped to mitigate that a bit more.

Look, I think if we look at this objectively, we have to admit that Inter are a terrible match up for us and Inzaghi dog walks Pioli right now. They are simply better drilled then us, and that is why I was expecting a defeat. Was I expecting a 5-1? NO! Are they 5-1 better than us? I don't think so, but if you keep walking into the same obvious rudimentary traps, you'll get punished. Like we've all said, it's always the same replica goals we concede against them. And that is because Pioli is stubborn and plays a high press against their 2 forwards. We should be the ones countering them and isolating their wide CBs. Instead they allow us to have the ball and continually hit us on the break. they had 7 shots and scored 5 f@cking times from them.

The 5-1 is obviously an exaggerated score as we simply stopped playing after their 3rd. That is what was shameful about the game. I don't think we started or played that 1st half with anything other than commitment and determination. But once that 3rd went in, we were done.

I didn't watch this one with the major attention I normally would, particularly because the UK have a 3PM-5PM broadcast blackout on live football, so our coverage didn't start till 15 minutes in, and of course we were already 1-0 down by this point.

I was encouraged by Kjaer, who still showed his quality, but unfortunately that red card for Tomori screwed us in this one, and I saw no cohesion between the Dane and Thiaow, the latter of whom looked awful.

I think a few others said it, for all the flair we have up front, we've absolutely botched the defence and sacrificed it - and this was a match in which a well-drilled defence for the opponent repelled us rather easily.

To have a good football team, you simply have to start with the backline, and a defence featuring Calabria, Thiaow or Kalulu isn't going to succeed. It's too soft, too passive, and it won't win you anything.

Doesn't matter if you've got Haaland and Mbappe, or our Leao up front, if the backline is this porous, as chosen by our manager, then it's finished before it even takes the field.

Rangers have the identical issue, a manager who doesn't care to fix the defence and is all about attack attack - and it is costing us big time too.

I really am a long-suffering Rangers and Milan fan whose sides seem to copy one another in how to fail.

Like I said, even with a world class DM we would have still been outclassed. I hate hearing Krunic's name being thrown as the first scapegoat whenever we play like sh*t. Yes, he is mediocre, and yes, he's not worthy of being a starter. But against Inter there were many, many other things that didn't work at all.

I also disagree that we played with any commitment or determination. It was a very opaque performance where everyone did the bare minimum. Even after we scored we kept playing with the same rudimentary approach. You can always see the fire in the Inter player eyes in these games, but I have never seen that in any of our players. Not even in those games we've won. No wonder we have lost 5 derbies straight, with 12 goals conceded and only one scored. Mind-boggling stuff.

Pioli to start Pobega instead of Reijnders today. Our midfield will be Loftus-Krunic-Pobega. Even a mid-table team can field a better midfield. No further comment.

At least a DM would have shielded better. I think Krunic will do well 8/10 times, but against team who are well organized and attack with fluidity, he's going to hurt us. I can say the same about Calabria for example. He's good against most Serie A sides. But he's a big weakness against a fast winger.

As for our performance, I think there's a mental block when it comes to Inter at this point.

Pioli is infuriating and Pobega plays like he's on ice (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)
