Both formats have or had their positive and negative sides. The old format was charming in a way the glamurous gala of CL never could have achieved.
But I think the old format made all the World Cups and Euros more watchable, and the players were more fresher.

You all realize that this would mean Milan not winning their last two trophies?

Are we talking European Cup/CL, because the CL got restructured a few years ago. It used to be 2 group stages it was like playing in another domestic league.

QUOTE (kurtsimonw @ Feb 16 2011, 09:55 PM) The European Cup and Champions League didn't have the same format. European Cup was just a straight (2 legs) knockout competition. When it changed it's name, it's changed the fomrat to that horrific 2 group stage thing. No, no. I know that, it's just someone said something about our last 2 cups (but that was within different formats in the CL). I wasn't sure if the discussion was the transition of European Cup to CL, or CL (old-format, 2 group stages) - CL (new format, 1 group stage).

QUOTE I wasn't sure if the discussion was the transition of European Cup to CL, or CL (old-format, 2 group stages) - CL (new format, 1 group stage). Oh, I think that was reffering to us not winning the league the previous season - so by my logic we shouldn't have even been in the competition, which I stand by. @X-Off: I just don't like the modern way of thinking in football. They just bring in new rules all the time to make it much easier for the top teams to succeed. The modern Champions League has killed football.

and the leagues should only feature one team... why should a 4th placed team have the chance to compete for the league the next season?

QUOTE (kurtsimonw @ Feb 17 2011, 01:00 AM) Huh? I don't follow that logic.
The Champions of Europe should be the previous Champion of their own league. That's all I'm saying. I'm just saying there is no 'should'. In the end I agree with you (yay! (IMG: style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) ) that it'd be a greater competition if only the domestic champions entered where we disagree is that I still think it's great the way it is.
