Nesta Has World Cup Regrets

Alessandro Nesta admits he still feels hurt by the injury he obtained during the 2006 World Cup and he also gives his reasons for retiring from international football.

The Milan star has been one of the best defenders of the past generation and won 78 caps during a ten-year career with the Azzurri. The 31-year-old was part of Italy’s World Cup winning squad in Germany last summer but after picking up an injury in the final group game against the Czech Republic, he did not play any further part in the tournament. 

This deeply hurt Nesta, who was very reserved during the after-celebrations in Berlin and Rome, and he later admitted that he did not feel part of the success as he had not made any contribution during the knock-out games. 

“The World Cup was a big regret. It really hurt me,” Nesta told Sky Sports Italia. “I only felt partly a World Champion. However the more that time goes by, the more I feel as though I played my part. 

“I mean I played all the qualification games and also the first two matches in the group in Germany.” 

Nesta finally hung up his Azzurri boots this summer and he believes he had no choice given his injury problems in recent years. 

“During the season I never have a rest. I play every game and by the end of the season I have made 60 appearances and I arrive at a major championship with a big risk of something happening. 

“I took the decision by myself. I arrived at a point where my health had to come first. I have had many injuries over my career. 

“I still have an excellent relationship with all the Azzurri boys, with Buffon, Cannavaro, Zambrotta and all the others.
