Weak opponent aside, I really liked the determination we showed. Even past the 70th minute while we were leading 5-0 we were constantly pressing the opponent and winning balls.

Now what we need to work on is the formation. I don't know what Montella is thinking, but playing 4-3-3 with Borini is worrying. Especially since he's played Bonaventura in the midfield three thus far and seems reluctant to play Hakan in the trequartista role. He needs to make up his mind, whether we'll play 4-2-3-1 or 3-5-2 this season, and apply it ASAP.

As for the individual performances, Kessie was obviously the best on the pitch. I swear the facility at which he does some things is impressive. Silva was very good as well, though I think he should have scored at least another goal. I also liked Suso, very vivid and always part of our attacking maneuvers. Hakan was alright but he still needs to find his rhythm and position on the pitch. The quality is there.

I might disagree with you sometimes, especially on passing judgment without testing - proof, but in general we agree. Yet there are some players like Locatelli and Suso on whom we will never agree (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Yep.

I found this comment from Montella post-match:

"Three-man defense? I don't think there's a winning formation, but a group spirit. It depends only from the players. We can play in any way. We only lack a trequartista, but otherwise we can play with all formations."

Link

Say what? We lack a trequaretista? If Calhanoglu isn't a trequartista then I don't know who is. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif)

I think this supports my view the trequartisa is dead. They're called AM these days and they do a lot more. And tbh Calhanoglu doesn't really act like a traditional 'trequartista'.

AM=trequartista. Trequartista in Italian comes from the word tre-quarti, meaning 3/4, that is, the space between midfield and attack. In other words, a trequartista is an advanced midfielder.

Calhanoglu has played his entire career as an advanced midfielder, so you can't brush it off so easily.

We have three very good AMs in Bona, Hakan and Suso. It's time Montella learned how to use them properly.

Nope, an advanced/attacking midfielder is a different role to trequartista. Kaka and Rui Costa were not advanced midfielders - they were trequartistas. I know the semantic definition is the same, but by that logic 'Forza Milan' in English means strength or 'force Milan', but of course that makes no sense in English or even Italian. Instead it means 'go' or 'come on' Milan etc. As you'll know.

If you want the difference - modern AM helps out in midfield and even defence - trequartistas only concerned themselves with the killer dribble or pass. None of Jack, Cal or Suso play anything like the Rui or Kaka role. And before you argue the case for Suso, he's a winger, not an AM. We have two AMs - Cal and Jack.

Advanced midfield didn't exist back in the day - actually I've no idea why the hell you're arguing this point when you bloody agreed with me a few weeks ago.
