They may have sold Kaka, but Scott Fleming is pleased to see Milan’s shrewd new transfer policy in action

It has been a momentous summer for Milan thus far. Kaka’s mega million transfer to Real Madrid and the furore that surrounded it will live long in the memory. The deal was the last straw for some among the Rossoneri support who have grown tired of the current administration’s foibles, and no wonder.

Adriano Galliani and his cohorts have allowed the Diavolo squad to decay over the past few years, only rarely opening the purse strings and even then indulging in some truly bizarre signings. Practicality seldom seems to be high among their priorities when it comes to transfers.

Instead they are motivated by notions such as sentiment – from signing Digao to keep Kaka happy to naively welcoming back prodigal sons Andriy Shevchenko and, in perhaps their most insane move of all, Ibrahim Ba.

Then there’s marketability – David Beckham, Ronaldinho et al – the superstars signed for how many posters and mugs can be sold with their faces plastered on them rather than their on-field contribution.

In short a talented unit has been allowed to stagnate into one that is aging and unbalanced, with the defence in a particularly dire state. Until this summer that is. Finally the San Siro side have broadened their scope and began to display some tactical acumen in their purchases.

Thiago Silva and Aly Cissokho [should he pass his medical] are both highly rated, under 25, and first team ready. They should help reinvigorate the defence, although another centre-back wouldn’t go amiss.

The most intriguing aspect of the Rossoneri’s sound new strategy though is their decision not to recruit a direct replacement for Kaka. Instead they have pursued Wolfsburg’s Edin Dzeko.

Those among you who don’t see or don’t rate the Bundesliga may doubt the 23-year-old’s value, but having watched the big Bosnian lead his side to their first German title I’m willing to bet he could easily become as iconic as Ricky was. Gifted with brute force, finesse and a ravenous apetite for goals, Dzeko is like Amauri on steroids.

The dual purpose of this decision is to release the real Ronaldinho. Ronnie hasn’t been himself for at least two years. Nonetheless such a supreme talent can’t simply vanish from a man. Even at the peak of his powers the bucktooth Brazilian and Kaka never really gelled together. With the No 22 gone Ronaldinho can begin to dictate Milan’s attacks, and who better to return him to his former stature than compatriot Leonardo?

The pros and cons of Kaka’s departure for Milan and Italian football as a whole will become apparent in the long run. In the short term, however, his sale seems to have facilitated some much-needed renovation, and helped the club to, in Glasgow parlance, ‘screw the nut’.
