I personally think
THIS is the best goal, at least the best one I've watched. (And yes, I'm old enough to remember watching this one).

Flawless technique with the volley, perfect connection with the ball. Genius goal.

And that's why I've had a hard time REALLY liking any Milan striker since. Nobody's measured up.
Sure, I like Pippo and Pato and Shevchenko was great in his day, but...IMO not even at their best could they match something like this.

The Zidane goal from the Carlos cross...and of course that Bergkamp goal would be among my favourites!

Zidane's in the CL Final vs Leverkusen was awesome. Roberto Carlos against France in Le Tournoi is very memorable. But
this is mine, no comment needed.

Why put Pato's name in the same sentence as Sheva and Pippo?
they're more or less finished but he's got his whole career ahead of him.

True enough, zeddie, but at this point in time Pato is a striker I like but who to me hasn't yet measured up to Van Basten.

Talking of Bergkamp, he's one retired player who's still got THE touch.
Bergkamp vs. some old boys teamBut when it comes to goals in competitive matches, I think Van Persie's aerial volley against Charlton gets a lot less attention than it deserves...
... because I don't think this should even be physically possible

Dennis!!!
thanks for that.
It's a good goal that one by van Persie but I think volley goals by Dutch players reached the top some time in 1988...

I had forgotten about that, it's a good goal. But nowhere near the greatest ones I've seen. Like I said in the EPL thread I'm not thrilled by powerful strikes, I prefer team efforts. So,
this Argentina goal in the same WC is a much better goal in my view. Simply wonderful!

One of my favorite goals was scored by Lothar Matthäus in the 1990 WC
against Yugoslavia (see at 4:35). Also, I love
this goal by Günther Netzer. And of course Cantonas legendary goal against
Sunderland. Coolest french person ever!

I love Pires, he was undoubtedly great. But as much as I like him, and Villa bias aside (seeing as he was poor here), I think Ginola was the better player. He was just unfortunate to play for lesser teams than Arsenal.
Magic, just magic

The best goal is free kicks and every team got the one that does free kicks.
Cristiano Ronaldo, Pirlo & Beckham is my favorites !

Magic, just magicWell, I think I might agree that on an individual level Ginola was the better of them.
However, what wins it for Pires in my opinion is his qualities as a team player, he would make the whole team play better no matter wether he had a good game himself or not.
I swear, during the 2002 season Pires was one of the top 5 players in the world. Assist King and Player of the Year, scored 9 goals in the league, all despite missing the last two months of the season.

That was a spectacular free kick!
[But since that game was brought up, you probably have forgotten that there was no foul there. And Beckham was gifted a few more chance to convert in the dying minutes again from non-existent fouls... It does not fit in your "FIFA is against England, FIFA does not love us" theory does it? You bloody whiner!]

Err.. except for the shove in Sheringhams back as he was about to jump for the ball?
(Funny how you failed to mention our penalty shouts in the first half, darling.
)
dst
Jan 24 2010, 12:23 AM
That's weak even for you! Come on now don't be like that, accept that that was not a foul! As was not the previous one given on Sheringham that Beckham almost converted. I don't think there was a penalty in the first half and you also scored your first goal from a clearly non-existent foul.
Just stop crying about the whole world being against you biacth!
kurtsimonw
Jan 24 2010, 12:32 AM
Your last comment proves it all. You have to resort to a silly little reason because your previous reasons were undone. I don't think FIFA like England at all, but I think they also would prefer us to qualify over other teams because it means £££. You're the one who bought it up, not me.
dst
Jan 24 2010, 12:39 AM
How do I resort to anything? I added one more incident in which you were favored... are you kidding me?

Jan 24 2010, 01:17 AM
Are you drunk? You obviously did not say this now... you did not say that FIFA are against England now either. I want what you're having if you've got some left!
Anyway... you want to feel that everyone is against just so that when you win you'll be able to say that you won despite that happening... you Englishmen love drama.
