Chelsea and AC lead Pato race By ANDREW HAIGH
June 26, 2007
CHELSEA are facing stiff competition from AC Milan for Brazilian wonderkid Alexandre Pato.
Striker Pato will star in the Under-20 World Cup next month - even though he is one of the youngest players in the competition at 17.
Some of Europe's top clubs will send their scouts to keep tabs on the Internacional ace.
But Pato's agent Gilmar Veloz has revealed European Champions Milan and the Blues are already leading the race for his signature.
Veloz said: "There are possibilities and official interest that is not invented.
"The club know about everything. Internacional allowed a representative from Milan - Leonardo (scout) - to look at him. "Chelsea also sent a person who was interested. But nothing is certain.
"Internacional have the federative rights to the player and they are taking care of it with us."
If Chelsea do strike a deal for the £18million-rated starlet, Veloz believes they may have to wait to get their man.
Pato would struggle to get a work permit and that could be a stumbling block in any move.
Veloz added: "Nothing will be done without the agreement of the club so the Internacional fans can be calm because Pato has contract with the club until 2009.
"But because he is not 18 yet, he cannot leave before January 2008." Chelsea's sporting director Frank Arnesen has a history of bringing Brazilian stars to Europe.
He took a 17-year-old Ronaldo to PSV Eindhoven for £4million in 1994.
And Arnesen hopes he can produce similar results with the capture of Pato this summer.

I'm a little confused with this 'work permit' lark. What does it actually mean? and why is it so hard to get one?
If anybody knows.

There is no way Messi was 18+ when he joined Barca, he was barely 17. I think he was anyways.

Work permit is very difficult to get in England.
If you are non-EU player than you need to have some international app. for you country, or should have played for any EU club etc...
BTW, I dont think that it depends too much if you're 17 or 18 to get work permit
P.S. After all, dont worry coz he can come in Milan in January, since in Italy he wont need it, or he can get it easier (I dont really know, but I just know that is not a problem)

If it's even harder to get in England, that's superb news. We'd surely have better chance than Chelsea.

messi was in youth academy for like 5 years, so it's different type of contract, he became a star after that...and he probably didn't have professional contract yet

Why are we after R10, wanting to pay +70 million euro for him? we could get Pato and turn him into something even better than R10, but for only 20 million max. the boy has great potential. I just hope he doesn't choose Chelsea cause England's not the right country for Brazilians.

Everyone's saying he's good... I don't know... if he's half as good as people say I would welcome him with open arms but we do need another experienced forward too.
So, I guess he'd be the costly signing and the other guy could be Gudjohnsen (Porty's choice) or Cruz, that type...
It sounds good... but I guess taxes in Italy are not helping us in this case either...

It seems like right now we've sold a couple players and loaned out a couple more. We have the Scheva proceeds from last season. We can afford this player. We should get him while he's 17 because by 19 he'll be on the Madrid or Barcelona band wagon.
Right now there aren't many options involved with talented experienced players.
We might as well go for the youth card. You watch we said this about Tevez, Gago, and Higuain and they all went to other big clubs.

If Leonardo recommends this kid to Galliani .. Make no mistake, he will sign for Milan.
Problem is, Chelsea aren't waiting for a work permit .. Chelsea can do an 'Alex' .. Supply one of it's feeder clubs the cash to buy him (e.g. Moscow).
In that case, they have an advantage, if the issue is about first team football.

and he would work out as a in-box striker if we wanted to ...he has played many times in both positions SS and in-box....

We definitely could use youth in an over 30 environment. He will mentor with these guys. Pato is a guaranteed superstar in the future.

Reports in the Brazilian media suggest that AC Milan will swoop for Porto Alegre teenage sensation Pato Alexandre if they fail in their bid to prise Sameul Eto’o away from Barcelona.
“Those aren’t just rumours, Milan are formally interested in my player,†said his agent Gilmat Veloz, who recently went on record as stating that Chelsea are already working hard to close a deal for the Brazil U-20 star.
Despite only being 17, Pato has seen his international profile make a dramatic rise of late due to being linked with big money moves to European heavyweights the likes of Chelsea or Inter.Â
The latter are even rumoured to have offered 5 of his relatives a job in Italy in a bid to secure the prodigious talents of the player nicknamed ‘the new Kaka’.
Milan would be able to serve up a tantalising deal sweetener of their own, in that Pato could look forward to teaming up with his boyhood idol: the real Kaka!

If Leonardo is impressed, I think he will sign for Milan .. If not this summer, then definitely in the winter market ...
I have only seen clips of his best tricks .. But I don't know how good he really is in a full match ..

Non sense. I mean, it's a world-class foward or a world-class young (non-proven in Europe) bud?
But again... HE'S NOT THE NEW KAKA'. Different positions. It's like saying Kaka' is the new Van Basten.

I agree, it isn't one or the other .. It is both. They don't have to come at the same time, but Pato has a long way to go to match at least 50% of Eto'o or R10's experience ..
That said, I wouldn;t mind Pato, but I want another 'proven' striker too, the latter is a must

There will never be a new Kaká ever, as there will never be a new Maradonna, Péle, Cruijff, Beckenbauer or whatever. Kaká is Kaká, basta.
Wouldn't mind giving Pato a chance though. If his transfer isn't as high as Andersons of course.
But 5 jobs doesn't seem to be to expensive...

I haven't seen enough of Pato to want him over someone like Eto'o, but I've only heard good things.
If we end up signing him, I don't think I would be disappointed. If Oli ends up back in Spain, that will leave us with three strikers over 30, and Pato - a good mix if you ask me.
It's a shame Chelsea are interested - they'll no doubt bump up the price to more than he's worth.
