great result for us...i don't think England played as well as some of the other posters on here do. i think our midfield completely outclassed England's midfield. I felt like, in the first half, our midfield really had more control over the game than England did. And with the star power England has, that should not have happened. Lampard was nowhere to be seen most of the game.

England may have had more break aways, but our defenders, for the most part, got back in time to stop anything from happening. Didn't help my nerves though! This was our weak point going into the world cup though...so it really didn't surprise me that they let some few. I'm hoping they learn to play better as a backline as the world cup progresses.

Besides the last 10-15 minutes I think the US also did a good job keeping Rooney out of the game. That was my biggest surprise. You could tell he was getting really frustrated towards the end of the game.

I'm also saw one comment about Gooch sucking. He played great. Made a lot of key slide tackles and, for the most part, kept a lot of crosses out of the middle. He also out ran Rooney on a breakaway. For someone who hasn't played in so long, I thought he played very well. If he keeps this progress up I think he could play a big roll for Milan next season.

Tim Howard is a beast...now people know why we have no shame calling him our best player on the field. He is just insane. No fear whatsoever.

If I were England I would seriously invest in the development of my goal keepers. Green being the #1 goalkeeper is just embarrassing.

If we can keep playing this well, we should have no problem advancing.

all time world cup record with England 1-0-1...I'll take that (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I actually thought Gooch was really good. Probably the best defender around. It was their fullbacks whose positioning was weird.

This.

I was pleasantly surprised to see the US control some possession in this match. I thought for sure it'd be like 70-30.

Can't agree here. Other than the odd long ball counter, you offered nothing going forward. I believe we had at least 6 or 7 more shots, I'd assume more shots on target too. I'd say we dominated the middle of the field and posession, I'd be surprised if it was less than 60/40 in our favour.

The praise for Tim Howard says it all. A keeper can't really be MotM unless the team is massively under pressure.

I actually think Slovenia will finish 2nd, behind England. The US full backs aren't good enough and their front 6 isn't able to create enough. I think they'll beat Algeria and then the States next week.

The American fakeness is being annoying. Before the game it was "We can win this, for sure we can beat England".. yet they act like it's a great result because they did worse than they thought? Their arrogance is even more annoying than that of United!

The US don't stand a chance of passing if they play like they played tonight.

Yeah, that's what I keep saying to my friends. They seem stuck in the World of 'we drew 1-1 with England' without actually looking at how they played.

It might seem a strange thing to say, but I think Slovenia may top the group. They were great defensively in qualifying and knocked the Russians and the Czechs out, these guys are no pushovers. I think England might go into the last game needing a draw to qualify and a win to top the group, and only get a draw.

I think people who feel either that Gooch was good or the US midfield dominated were, er, perhaps watching a different game. Gooch's poor positioning is what let Gerrard through for the goal. That's not MOTM mateiral. And the US midfield was mediocre - I wouldn't say that they dominated the English midfield at all (then again, until the last 15 or so minutes, very little was seen from the English midfield aside from the Gerrard goal.) Rooney was...almost invisible this game. That really surprised me. I agree about Heskey doing well (and do NOT want to run into him, he'd break off my fins). And about Howard doing well for the US. The rest? Meh.

My fins are verging toward down for both sides, to be honest.

Dst will now face competition from diavolo

slovenjia has some quality players with 2 star national players.

National gems: Novakovic, Handanovic

great potential players: Khrin, Birsa, Oblak (16 yo GK going to Liverpool, i hate them but i've dealt with khrin going to inter so, i'd be pleased with this)

Solid performers : Dedic, Ljubljankic, Jokic

Robert koren's not half bad as a captain either, i know you (kurt) seem you dislike him but for country he is commanding.

i'll be laughing at all of you when we make it through the group (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

i agree that US didn't create many chances going forward, but I think that had more to do with your defense rather than offense. Also don't think you guys create too many chances in the first half either.

also most US fans never said that a draw wouldn't be a good thing for us. sure, we said we thought we could've won (which could've happened), but I don't think you would've found many US fans that wouldn't have been happy with a draw with England.

I thought we played well...and if you say we played poorly then I hate to see how you guys compare against, what you say, are better opponents.

but I give Gooch credit FOR shutting down Rooney. yes, the first goal was partly his + others fault. But for the most part he played a good game. Made a lot of critical slide talkes in the box and removed Rooney from the game. Remember, he hasn't played a full 90 minutes since last September. I was pleasantly surprised for how well he played compared to how he played in the previous couple of friendlies.

i still, and will always, feel like our midfield, for most of the game, controlled the ball a lot more than England's midfielders did. and considering England's midfielders are suppose to play on a completely different level than the US's midfielders, that shouldn't have happened.

i would like to see Altidore do more...we really missed having Charlie Davies up there.

on a side note: if the US's chances of passing through this group are based on what you think of tonight's game...then no team that has played up to this point is going to go through their group.

so too does balo, but i love him too. I can safely say i admired their play this year because we are no longer in the same club status as them.
