QUOTE (kurtsimonw @ Dec 12 2007, 07:41 PM) (P.S. Gianfranco Zola, Alan Shearer, Tony Adams and Stuart Pearce are all been names thrown around to be part of Capello's staff.) Zola would be great cause it seems like he English players respect him. But an English (other than Shearer) would be just as good or even better. QUOTE (Jack Sparrow @ Dec 12 2007, 07:51 PM) I mean Becks was a celeb and all, but he always gave that aura of naivette, and being a hen pecked husband, and mouthing off stereotypical dumb blonde lines only made him more likeable to me. Terry on the other hand argues a lot, I don't think he's as dedicated as Beckham is to the English cause(controversial opinion, I know), or has really shown himself to be a pillar of the side. I'd prefer Stevie G or even Neville to be handed the captaincy. I think what you really liked was him wearing his woman's underwear... No Stevie G please. Terry is great and he's a defender!

I don't think that Terry's on-field (arguing with refs, pulling cards out of hands, etc) behaviour or his off-field behaviour (fights in pubs, drunk in public, etc) are a particularly good example. So I would be thrilled to see a new captain for the English NT. But who is there to appoint? Neither Lampard nor Gerrard have performed as well for the NT as they have for their clubs. Gary Neville is a walking band-aid. Ditto Owen Hargreaves. Ditto Michael Owen. Rio is a good player but is, well, not the sharpest crayon in the box. Rooney is too young. So who would I pick? Based on personality and on performance for the NT, I think my first choice would be Gareth Barry. He's had some marvellous performances and has clearly played his heart out for England. He's not in the tabloids for this party or that night-with-a-hooker or anything of that sort. He's generally pretty classy in his on-pitch behavoir. Hopefully whoever the new coach is (presumably Don Fabio) will take a good long look at the players and appoint a captain who's a good player on the pitch and a good example off the pitch. (Before anyone asks, no, Kurt did NOT pay me to write this. (IMG: http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) )

I most certainly did not. (IMG: http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) I personally think JT will keep it, on the off-chance he does lose it, it'll go to Gerrard. As long as it's a respectable, vocal senior player I'm not too bothered. If it were to go to someone very young I'd be disappointed though! I'm just wondering what system Capello will use if he is indeed going to be the England manager. The 4-2-3-1 he used at Madrid maybe? It wouldn't be an awful idea. The keeper and defense would remain the same. Barry/Hargreaves/Carrick would fit into the two DM positions with Gerrard/Lampard the more advanced guy. The two wide guys would presumeably be Joe Cole and SWP, maybe even Rooney as he's played their for United numerous times. Then the main striker could be anybody. It wouldn't be disasterous and would make us much stronger defensively, I suppose we just need that striker that we can really rely on for goals, and for me Owen isn't that person. He'll score regular enough if he plays.. it's just the playing part he can't get around to. (IMG: http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

Actually, if it is Capello as new NT coach for England, I wouldn't consider ANY player a definite starter at this point. Don Fabio is not shy about benching guys he doesn't think are giving 100%. As for systems, I think that Capello can adapt the system he uses to the strengths of the players at his disposal. My memory is a little fuzzy (no old person jokes!) but I think he would sometimes use a 4-3-1-2 when he was at Milan. The 94 final was 4-2-3-1, though. I'm going to add one person to my list of 'who I'd like to see as England captain'. If someone could talk Paul Scholes out of international retirement, I'd give it to him in a heartbeat. Even if he DOES have MU cooties. (IMG: http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Hopefully Capello does bench players who aren't giving 100%. He'll need to be just as brave to change from the 4-4-2 formation we always use. For some reason the fans don't like to see it changed. (IMG: http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif) One thing about Paul Scholes.. he and Jamie Carragher, at least not by me, wouldn't be welcomed back into the England team, forget being given captaincy. I really like Paul Scholes alot, even if he is a United player, but I think it's wrong of a player to retire from International football. Playing for your country is a huge honour and not something that you should turn down. You don't stop playing for your country, your country stops picking you and that's the way I've always saw it. Obviously Jamie Carragher's a d!ck, his reason that he was being played out of position and that's just a ridicuous excuse.

Expect a LOT of fans booing him for benching X,Y,Z players (IMG: http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) Then when he's gotten England in the driving seat for the WC10 ... I think, English fans and English football would start to appreciate tactical football more (IMG: http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) About Jamie Carragher ... I think he has a right to quit the NT. I mean, it's not like u don't have any good defenders, Ferdinand and Terry .. U also have Campbell and Richards ... Still, u never know Capello could talk Jamie out of retirement (IMO, he is the best English defender ahead of Terry and Ferdinand). Also, I think Beckham will be a Key player for England, and I think he'll be the captain again under Capello. Who knows ... But one thing is certain, with Capello, you'll pass the Quarter finals (IMG: http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

U also have Campbell and Richards ... I wouldn't care about the Carra situation if it wasn't for the Croatia game. We had Lescott and Campbell playing, if Carragher wasn't such a girl, he'd have been there and helped us get to the Euro's since he's better than both of the guys that played. But I hope he doesn't put on an England shirt again, the reason for not playing was a disgrace. (IMG: http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) I don't think Capello will be benching alot of players, at least not our 'stars'. Alot of people are saying Gerrard and Lampard aren't playing well for England - the way you make an England team is based on your performances for your club - both of them have been in fantastic form for their clubs, therefore they deserve an England place. I'm not really sure what you meant by 'appreciating tactical football' though.

No that's not right, they have to prove they care about their national team too. So what if Lampard scored 100 goals this season with Chelsea, would he deserve a place in the England squad if he didn't care to give his all while playing? I think not.

I'm not really sure what you meant by 'appreciating tactical football' though. U see, the main reason that ur 'fans' would boo Capello is that he would bench all the players who aren't giving 110% in training at the NT camp. Forget, club form (IMG: http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) He is building a winning NT, something England haven't tasted in so long ... Just enjoy it, while it lasts (IMG: http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) well, the English game is based on pace and long balls .. Along with a target man .. all in the classical 4-4-2. What Capello would do, is shift that formation into maybe a 4-3-2-1 or a 4-4-1-1 or a 4-3-1-2 or even the Catenaccio (sweeper) 5-4-1 ... He will bench one of Gerrard or Lamps ... and play two DMs ... he will bring in the experienced players ... Basically giving ur the NT a face lift along with a whole new dynamic way of playing. England will no longer be about media hype and star players ... it will be a NT that will give humility on the pitch for glory !!! Still, one thing I doubt .. It's his first chance at a NT ... Still, I'm of the opinion that he will come good at the end. As he is too experienced to miss a chance at this point (IMG: http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) Plus, he wont take up a challenge unless he is confident of hauling in the results.

I am hoping he keeps alot of our more experienced players as I really want our 'Golden Generation' to win something at International level!

But I do believe that club form does not mean you automatically get a place in the national side.

goal.com says it's a done deal. The approved it . They're ironing out his contract.
Seems he wants an all-Italian staff. The FA wants him to have Pearce or SHearer on board.

Capello is never affected by the media or any other exterior forces but I don't know if he can stay focused this time around. I think the English will be very hard on him because their frustration has grown too much especially after the latest failure and he's gonna get it really hard as soon as the first bad result comes around! The fact that he's not English himself will also cause some controversy as some may seem him as a know-all savior who thinks he can do better than them...
I hope he makes it. He deserves it and England deserves it too.
