TOKYO (AP) - The 2007 Club World Cup hosted by Japan will feature an experimental goal line technology that will help referees more accurately determine if a goal is scored, FIFA officials said Friday.

The new technology, which transmits information in real time to referees, may be used in future World Cup tournaments.

The technology will be tested at the Dec 7-16 Club World Cup and other tournaments.

"FIFA is very much interested in the test results," said Dr. Viacheslav Koloskov, Chairman of the FIFA Organizing Committee. "If the results are good enough a decision will be made whether to use the technology in future World Cups perhaps as early as 2010."

Using the chip-in-ball goal-line technology, the referee will receive a visual signal on his watch when the ball containing a microchip crosses the goal line in the Club World Cup.

The information will be encrypted so it can't be interfered with, according to officials at adidas and Cairos Technologies AG, the two companies that developed the technology.

The Club World Cup features the top clubs from soccer's six continental zones.

I'm a bit split on this, it's a good idea in that it will limit the number of game-changing decisions referee's get wrong. But it's these decisions that make football what it is, why it's so talked about weeks and weeks after a game!

Now imagine if Seedorf smashes the ball, with one of his killer drivers ... hehe I don't think the chip would work after that.

Then again .. It is a great idea .. Cuz these mistakes tend to cost teams the game ..
