QUOTE (Danny @ May 25 2011, 05:47 PM) My only curiosity is why Pirlo has opted to join Juve. They're a team on the decline - nowhere near what they should be. Finishing where they did couldn't have been attractive. Probably because he wanted to stay in Italy...

Many factors:
1) Juve can offer a "best of both worlds" solution: meaning he signed for a big club by name and history, but in problems, which ultimately means he'll be getting a stellar treatment and a secure first team status.
2) He's staying in Italy.
3) Hey, it's Juve. I think Pirlo wanted to do, what Baggio and a few others did - playing for the Big three.
4) Buffon, Chiellini, Del Piero, Marchisio,...all buddies from National team. It's probably the familiar atmosphere that is acceptable after leaving home.

QUOTE (KillerMax @ May 24 2011, 03:19 AM) In my opinion, Ancelotti was the only one who understood Pirlo in the position he invented for him. Leonardo and Allegri assumed they could use him there just because he played there under Carletto. I believe there was space for him here as LCM, but I don't know all the behind-the-curtain details, so I stop at that.
What I can say is that, from what I saw of Pirlo, he was never one of my favorite players. I appreciate his technique and I will always remember him as a unique player, but I believe Rui Costa to be a much better and more complete player than him. In fact I saw Rui play in his position a good two or three times and I thought he did fantastic.
What didn't I like about Pirlo's game? Let's count:
1) He was meant to be a great set piece taker and he did take the majority of our set pieces by a BIG margin and he seemed oh so very careless with them. And I'm not talking about how his face looked or his demeanor. I'm talking about him delivering 1 great corner in 10 he took. I'm talking about him wasting almost all the free kicks he has taken in the past couple of years, curling them sky high... Not even the CL final free kick was a good one. Just a lucky one with more of Inzaghi's goal sniffing genius. How many freekicks has he scored for us in total? I'm pretty sure the number doesn't look good for 10 season of being here and taking almost all the free kicks when he played.
2) He was meant to be this great passer... Yet I remember many many occasions where his long passes have gone absolutely nowhere. Kind of like Nesta in that respect. I do admit his short passes in the middle of the park gave our game a beautiful dynamism, but Van Bommel seems to be able to do that however differently yet effectively. But I did see Pirlo struggle pretty badly when space was limited to us by small teams that played with 9 men in their own half. Pirlo seemed as clueless as anyone else and I always thought he should be able to do something. At least a killer through pass or something, but I mostly remember back passes and play around the area, nothing lethal.
3) He suffered too much without a full strength Gattuso. In the heart of the midfield, right in front of defense, that's just bad. I don't blame this on him, but he could at least work this out somehow with the coach or something to find a solution that works. But it looked like he was always played there and in recent years suffered too much as a result of his lack of physical presence, pace and any noteworthy defensive ability. I didn't like seeing him schooled by attackers, as he is not meant to face them on that level. Sometimes in some intense rainy games, he looked like a burnt out washed out little wet mouse in our midfield giving his all trying to win the ball back for his team. Something wrong about that picture.
That's all that came to mind. The first one annoyed me a lot. I believe parting ways was probably a good option for both parties.
Thank you and goodbye Andrea. I remember your Brescia days! Was going to post a lengthy "I hate you Pirlo you overrated ****" post but this sums it up quite nicely (IMG: style_emoticons/default/96.gif) Incredible that he earned the title of "maestro" for such a low % of success of the things that he was supposedly good at (IMG: style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) Even more curious the fact that his departure to one of our hated rivals, accompanied by such comments as "Milan will see if it was a mistake to let me go" (paraphrasing)- and he gets off with only well wishes (IMG: style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)
