MORE MISERY FOR MILAN Nicola Ventola's second-half goal inspired Atalanta to victory and piled more domestic misery on AC Milan.
The Rossoneri have struggled all season in Serie A and that continued on Sunday although they were hardly helped by having to play the final 15 minutes with 10 men following an injury to Gennaro Gattuso.
Milan boss Carlo Ancelotti had made all his substitutions prior to Gattuso having to leave the pitch and it cost the visitors dearly as substitute Andrea Soncin killed the game off a minute from time.
The result in Bergamo means Milan are 17 points behind Serie A leaders Internazionale and Palermo after 10 games played.
The visitors, who moved to within a point of earning a place in the second round of the Champions League with a 4-1 victory over Anderlecht in midweek, controlled the opening minutes and could have taken the lead with 12 minutes played, Yoann Gourcuff's 30-yard drive firing just over the bar.
Atalanta replied with Massimo Donati trying his luck from long range and forcing goalkeeper Dida to make a desperate clearance.
Midway through the first-half, Milan were unlucky not to break the deadlock with Claudio Rivalta forced to make a goalline clearance after Alberto Gilardino had fired in a shot.
On the half-hour mark, Ventola's volley went wide as the hosts upped the tempo.
Filippo Inzaghi should have put his team ahead with 39 minutes played after clever play by Kaka served the striker inside the box but his first touch went wide.
Gilardino's flying header from inside the six-yard box then went wide in what was the last chance of the opening half.
Milan continued to attack after the re-start but it was Atalanta who broke the deadlock in the 50th minute.
Ventola's left-footed volley towards the near post stunned Dida to bring the Atleti Azzurri D'Italia Stadium to life.
The Rossoneri would have equalised three minutes later had home keeper Alex Calderoni not acrobatically palmed Andrea Pirlo's free-kick over the bar.
Shortly after, Gourcuff was booked for diving inside the area when his marker clearly touched the ball and not the striker.
Atalanta were quite happy to sit on their lead and hit Milan on the counter-attack.
Gattuso's injury hindered the Rossoneri who lacked ideas and could have conceded their second in the 70th minute.
Donati's right-footed effort from Fernando Tissone's assist went wide, much to Dida's relief.
Kaka twice had the opportunity to level the score but his attempts from close-range were saved by Calderoni.
Soncin made no mistake at the other end as his left-footed strike from inside the box towards the top left-hand corner beat Dida to kill the contest.
Stefano Colantuono's joy was understandable as his team have maintained their unbeaten run at home and also climbed to fourth position in the standings.
